  • These were the days of the real entertainers... they had the talent.... the chops... and they didn't have to swear and kept ALL their clothes on!!!!!

  • In-fucking-sane!!!!!

  • 11 people should search for one of buddy rich's drum sticks, and shove it where they know it ;)

  • I refuse to compare Buddy with any other drummers. THIS is real drumming, this guy was born to do this. God Bless him wherever he is.

  • its so awesome that this used to be on tv

  • 4:00 um, hehe... anyone can do THAT! *nervous laughter*

  • so why are we comparing drummers/musicians again ???

  • BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD.

  • the camera can't keep up with rich's drumming, and lewis' drum stick dropping.

  • For the record Buddy Rich is what all drummers aspire to be and as far as Travis Barker is concerned Dave Grohl can whoop his ass with one stick.

  • what band was buddy in?

  • What is up with all these travis barker comments?! Very annoying. Who is he anyway that he and buddy rich are being compared so much. Its like when we youtube Muhammad Ali and all you read is people comparing him to mike tyson when tyson shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence as Ali.

  • @mbhotie715 ahahah its soo true (travis is a really good drummer but hes over rated but also really underrated :Phes mroe of a punk drummer though so you are right in using tyson and muhammad as you shouldnt even be comapring them)

  • @celluoiddify But why is travis always compared to Buddy? I rarely see other comparisons of Buddy and someone else. Its always this travis dude. Seems to me people should be comparing Buddy to drummers like Peart and Bonham, not retards like this barker guy.

  • the host voice is annoying! and buddy looks like john cryer from 2 and a half man!

  • @musicluva314 The host's voice is a put on. He is a comedian that made many movies before & after Buddy's career. Jerry Lewis is his name. You're obviously a youngster. Ask your mommy and daddy about. Legendary guys (he & Buddy). And, he doesn't look like John Cryer. John looks a little like him - very little. This clip was produced before Cryer was even a thought.

  • dude its neil peart's origininal drum set!!

  • this is 1955

  • @musc124 Yes sir it is... Jerry & Dean didnt even talk to each other in '65 let alone have a show

  • Comparing Buddy Rich to modern drummers is like comparing a atomic bomb to a hydrogen bomb

  • Men like Papa Joe Jones, Louis Belson, and the Master Himself, Buddy Rich. Buddy's influence and contribution to drumming will probably never be parallelled by anyone, He's in one way or another influenced about ALL of todays greats. I just go on here and see what everone has to offer. There is no "Best" drummer today. There are so many styles of playing, it's like comparing apples to oranges anymore, I just like seeing the talent thats out there, and there's ALOT of it! Let's just enjoy it!

  • That being said I can honestly say that there is ALOT of talent out there, and thanks to tools like youtube, alot of drummers that would have gone un-noticed can be seen today. Travis Barker is a good drummer, but there are ALOT of good drummers, great ones, like Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, Shannon Larkin, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Simon Phillips and so on. But I must say, the guys who REALLY pioneered and started these drummers on there paths were the men in classic big band...

  • Ya know, I've been playing drums for almost 30 years, I started when I was 10, learning my rudiments and learning basic reading skills in school, then going through marching band where I got chops with Drum Corps style playing also. I started listening to music from Rush early on and then Dream Theater when Images and words came out. I can play alot of music from both, as well as some jazz too, so I consider myself fairly accomplished and knowledgeable on the subject.

  • Love jerry lewis

  • 2 Masters.

  • this is awesome

  • back in the days when they knew how to make awesome tv

  • Buddy Rich the best drummer in the world

  • The world is big enough for an array of talented and unique drummers, but for speed and technique in this particular style, few could even begin to approach Buddy- and mostly they'll admit it. The only two drummers in the jazz realm I ever saw that could hold a candle were Max Roach & Tony Williams.

  • Jerry lewis wasn`t bad.

  • Nobody cuts Buddy Rich...Nobody!

  • this guy has got travis barker beat

  • my to be son has got travis barker beat

  • Dude.....Jazz Drummers Are Better Than Todays Drummers0.o

  • hahaha travis has nothing on buddy rich. jazz drummers are so much more talented then rock/metal drummers. most modern drummers will tell you their influenced by a jazz drummer or were inspired by one. that actually goes for pretty much any instrument actually.

  • @travisBrulzz omg u call him a nerd when you talk about travis barker....kid u just emberassed yourself bad

  • @furrysega7 no shit....... thats what i'm saying. i said buddy rich is better than travis barker. buddy rich is jazz, travis barker's today.

  • Comment removed

  • @furrysega7 yeah i totally agree

  • that snare sounds so amazing

  • i would love to see Buddy Rich vs. Keith Moon! That would be entertaining

  • Me tooo!!!!! probably the fastest drum battle...heheh

  • Keith Moon? C'mon

  • I'm gonna bug my tutor to teach me stuff like this.

  • anyone who thinks travis barker is better than buddy rich is the biggest retard on earth. buddy rich is wwaaaaaaaayyyy better than travis barker will ever be. buddy rich, john bonham, keith moon, and neil pert are the godfathers of drums.

  • @bigD2387 Buddy Rich is the best drummer of the History, I agree with the Godfathers except that Mike Portnoy is missing there

  • @foghato i'd dissagree and say Bonham's better...... thats my opinion. you have your own opinion and i dont have any problem with that.

  • @bigD2387 travis barker is miles away from being a touch like buddy rich...LONG LIVE BUDDY RICH

  • @sickassdrummer1 damn right

  • @bigD2387

    and mike portnoy

  • @bigD2387 Especially Pert. Lol, I love Rush.

  • @bigD2387 travis barker sucks i always have to tell people that because they have never heard any music before 1995 and they think they know so well

  • @bigD2387 I literally couldn't have said it better myself but you forgot something, Mike Portnoy is the son of the Godfathers

  • @dagurbezisinthemalof yes. he's another one that'll give travis barker "an offer he can't refuse"..... (thats from the Godfather if you didnt know) lol

  • @bigD2387 Well, fuck neil pert. But other than that you're on the money.

  • @existenceisrelative although I don't agree with your opinon on Neil, you're entitled to your own opinion.

  • @bigD2387 john bonham, keith moon, and neil pert are all great drummers. i'm a big of all three, but keith moon is kind of a one trick pony, the same almost applies with the john and neil, but john has sort of a jazzy influence in his style. neil is probably the greatest rock drummer and could probably play some mean jazz or funk, i've just never heard him. some of the earliest grandfathers of drums, besides buddy rich, are steve gadd, elvin jones, and dave black. you should check them out

  • @drumguy2194 oh i've heard of them. and i would consider Neil Peart (Rush) more of prog rock than actual rock. Rock is Led Zeppelin (John Bonham). and The Who (Keith Moon) is also rock but they aren't really as heavy as Led Zeppelin so therefore I would consider Zeppelin to be Hard Rock....

  • @bigD2387 i agree, they are all great drummers who were very influencial in their styles of music. and also im glad u didnt list ringo starr in your list of the grandfathers of drums haha

  • @drumguy2194 "Godfathers" of drums... lol

  • @bigD2387 Led Zeppelin was blues rock as well. And is often considered one of the first heavy metal bands.

  • @bigD2387 dont forget mitch mitchell, well to me hes up there haha

  • @bigD2387 Gary Burghof is a better drummer than Travis Barker.

Also don't forget Ed Shaughnessy, Gene Krupa and Terry Bozio.

  • @rrtodd95 terry bozio is good, but he is way overrated and is not even near being considered a godfather of drums... lol

  • ...By the way...Remember the name, then let the bodies hit the floor with respect. Buddy Rich...in 1965? Are you kidding me? Ha!

  • Gentlemen; I present to you THE MASTER. I met Buddy In Georgetown, Washington DC standing on a corner. I will never forget the goosebumps I got just shaking his hand. This is what A LEGEND looks like in any artform. Amazing. I stayed up late nights to watch Johnny Carson when I was a little boy just in case Buddy was on the show. Mastery is Greatness like this. Thanks Mr Rich for showing us a natural.

  • kids, I have not heard anyone better than Buddy ... just his left hand alone is better than most anyone today ... he was a coacky guy ... but he could back it up !

  • look up george kollias

  • Shitty mics shitty 60s tv recording,,,,, please show me anyone that comes close,,,,,, please....

  • holy crap there were three drummers in that last bit.

  • Man that BUDDY RICH is awesome .

  • soooooooooooo why is everybody saying fuck travis barker?? did trvais barker ever say that he was better then buddy rich?? jesus christ its soooo annoying listening to people say he is overrated and shit. He is a great drummer but definitely not the best. Buddy Rich is one of the best. End of story shut the fuck up.

  • I don't think those were attacks on Travis Barker, more on his fanbois that proclaim him the best drummer in the world.

  • I'd like to see any modern day drummer band battle this video. That would be something to see.

  • it is one thing when like neil pert does a drum solo. but at this time and thise times music he is the best drummer i have ever heard!!

  • holy hell look at his foot at 3:45 how fast he goes. legendary drummer!

  • Fuck Travis Barker.

And I think it's kind of funny that at the end the band in the background has a drummer in it, what is the point?

  • Best Drummer in the World.

Eat your hart out gene Cruper mate you so enfersized, your sticks.

  • Drumming at its best!

  • what did Travisbarker4prez say cause it's not showin on my computer but i bet it was pretty gay but yea this is some amazing drumming probably the best iv'e seen in a way

  • AWESOME, NO WORDS...

    XD Bonzo

  • funny

  • lets see you play this

  • Lets see anyone play that.

  • idk which one is better..joe morello or this guy......

  • lol

  • no one can even touch this guy's shadow!!!

  • man neil pert too!!

  • can't.... stop... breathing... uhhh... *dies*

  • adam *mına koydu baterinin

  • a classic and comedic look at one of the best drummers God has given us. Thx for posting

  • Watched some Travis Barker. Very good drummer and performer. While very gifted, he isn't a Buddy Rich. Mr. Barker should try playing in a coat...something I rarely see today's drummers do...it's very restrictive. Barker is very appealing with a lot of strobe & lights to add to his talent. Will he be considered a ledge 10 years from now...most likely not. Rich is ledge...I doubt any great drummer today would say they are better than Rich.

  • and buddy is god.

  • Jerry Lewis is a genius.

  • omg this guy is the best i have ever seen !

  • good drummer

  • Dude. Come on. I love Travis Barker as much as the next guy, but this is why people hate him. They look past his actual talent and see the people saying he's better than anyone before him. Which just can't be true. Not as talented or as influential, sorry. He's good, but not the best.

  • ummm

  • lol

  • wow u ignorint ass hole first of all have some god damn respect, travis barker beats the holy hell out of his toms and calls it music

  • dude look at other drummers besides Travis Barker, he;s good but I don't think he's as good as Buddy Rich, Daniel Erlandson, Joey Jordison, Eric Singer and the late Eric Carr.

  • thomas pridgren is good

  • dude, dont forget bonham

but im thinkin ur talkin about big band/swing drummers

    regardless, bonham was amazing!

  • Danny Carry, John Bonham, and Keith Moon. Nuff' said. Joey Jordison? Get the fuck out. He just hits stuff. He puts no thought into the instrument.

  • Oh yeah. And Buddy Rich kicks everybody in the pussy.

  • Not to mention Neil Peart......

  • hell yeah man well agreed he could kick them all in the ass in his deepest sleep with just a snare drum and not even try, and Joey Jordinson dont even get me started.... he shouldent even be worthy to be in the same universe as buddy rich

  • AGREED MAN.

    And don't forget neil peart.

yeah, travis versus joey jordison is a drum battle i'd love to see.

travis would get his ass kicked down to hell.

  • This guy is INSANE!!!

  • Jon Bonham my ass

  • Buddy Rich owns

  • Buddy Rich made Drumming look others, made Drumming look bloody hard.

The best drummer, in my opion that ever lived.

  • Buddy Rich > God

  • NO need for todays huge kits used by modern drummers, who concentrate too much on double bass drum kicks rather than hand talent.Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa proved this. NO lights or smoke effects either.

  • Buddy rich best drummer ever.

  • Kirk your right

  • I disagree john Bonham was the best drummer ever. Buddy rich was John's idol but eventually the student surpassed the master

  • lmao i love Zeppilin but r u serious?? like seriously?!?!? man Buddy Rich coudve played anything...Bonham would lose his sticks trying to swing

  • You understand that Bonham's main influence thats why his set was set up like it was. and he started out playing swing and stuff like buddy. he totally had the chops to play swing.

  • But u said he surpassed Buddy and thats blasphemy, he can't match his finesse, not to take anything away from Bonham but they are on different levels

  • Well in my opinion he did. But i mean you cant change my mind and i cant change yours so lets leave it at that.... Buddy is amazing and Bonham is amazing as well. plain and simple

  • Agreed=]

  • if ur reading this and bored 0

  • Buddy rich best drummer who ever lived

  • Buddy Rich was fuckin amazing

  • damn...thats entertainment xD

  • Q HDP

  • wow!

  • Drum God

  • I think Jerry is a kind of drummer though or he couldnt have done as good as he did. And he was goofing off and not doing as good as he could. But no one can beat Buddy Rich at drumming he is the King of drummers

  • This is from a Golden Age of TV in America that is now sadly gone. Nothing even remotely close to this on TV today, not since Ed Sullivan, really. Here we have a chance to see the 2 best in their fields having a great time. This is enteretainment at it's finest. FYI, JL and BR were great friends, and JL is god-father to BR's daughter.

  • Well, Jerry can't play obviously-lol But, his drum kit was awesome. And, for you folks who say "Buddy wasn't the best", "Gene Krupa" this & "Chic Webb" that. Everybody has different opinions as to who a better drummer was. All the belittling & attacks are just counter-productive. Buddy Rich was a brilliant / awesome / skilled drummer - period.

  • WOW!!!!!! This is a real gem!! I love the side angle of Buddy, you can see his foot work!! It's rare to see different angle footage being filmed of those days, not only Buddy's solo's but others. And Jerry Lewis can play the drum quite well too, as can Sammy Davis Jr!! Name me a present day actor-entertainer that can do that? No one comes to mind!!

  • This is one of the coolest / funniest / most entertaining things ever. This is what television SHOULD be TODAY.

  • jerry lewis is well funny

  • Gene Krupa was better than Rich, and Chic Webb was better than all of them. Look it up.

  • Found Nothing About Chic webb....

  • In the jazz world i guess that if you cant play like this you arent a jazz drummer cuz i listen to jazz and it all sounds like this with drums

  • This was the first Buddy Rich video I ever saw a couple years ago. I didn't know playing like that was even possible, it completely blew my mind.

  • More than likely, this was from "The Colgate Comedy Hour", which Martin and Lewis hosted dozens of times during it's run in the early 1950's...

  • In a friggin' tux no less! Just spellbinding...like Coltrane or Dolphy, or Jaco, just one of a kind...thanks for posting and by the way, there's no way this could be from 1965, because Jerry says to Buddy "Dean, the whole gang" something like that...so it's gotta be before 1956 at least...

  • Buddy rich is the best ever, not only innovative and one of the first, but he's AMAZING

  • the best ever ( & before u say neil pert ) who is great , ask him who the best ever was

  • Amazing

  • favor peliculas español neutro ¿ donde ?

  • Man that must suck playing like that in a damn suit.

  • He was drumming his a*s off.

  • awesome!!!

  • Fantastic classic - saw Buddy Rich in Milwaukee years ago...amazing entertainer, as well as Jerry.

  • This in the day when there were no smooth action bass pedals, and double bass sets were not the norm. Modern day "drummers" need to take a lesson--Get hip with jazz!

  • I know he sold his soul to the Devil noone NOONE can ever be this good its not practice...

  • this is not 1965 it is in fact 1955 or 6

  • greatest drum solo ive ever seen. lahat kayo, keep dreaming.

  • GO JERRY!!! haha I love you!

  • Buddy's playing was WAY AHEAD of its time.............

  • 1956. I have this on a DVD.

  • sinatra couldn't stand buddy rich, they got into a fist fight in the middle of a song during a live concert

  • That was so funny. "This is terribly embarrassing this whole thing."

  • Excuse me, this could not have been 1965. More like 1954 or 55. Know why? He said "Dean" wanted to hear Rich. Jerry and Dean broke up in 1955 and did not speak for years.

  • You're right MarkR. I just went and saw a video here of Buddy in the early 70's and he's playing Slingerland.

  • Whoop's...different video. It's the one with him battling Krupa that you can see the Rogers badge. I can't tell what this kit is.

  • Hmm. All the later footage I ever saw of Buddy, including here on youtube he's playing Ludwing and when I saw him live in the early 80's he was playing Ludwig in fact Ludwig has issued the "Buddy Rich" signature kit and it's on display at guitar center. I can see the Rogers badge on this video. I think I remember him playing Slingerland for a spell.

  • In those day's Buddy played Leedy drums and switched to Ludwig in the early 70's and played them from there on out.

  • Buddy ended his career with a vintage set of Slingerland Radio Kings. He had those for several years prior to his death. He talks about those drums on YT on the Larry King interviews. He had played Slingerland, Ludwig, Rogers and Vox drums in his career.

  • um this wasnt in 1965

  • anyone noe wut brand of drums and cymbals he used

  • not sure..ludwig has been pretty popular and has been around since 1910. you can check out 'buddy rich drum company'...whether or not those are the kind of drums he played with..i'm not sure.

  • I looked it up, and pretty sure he uses slingerland.

  • thnx i was just wondering he such a great drummer

  • Great clip, Buddy was da man!!!!!

  • that was funny and amazing at the same time! great vid ,thanks for the upload

  • "Jaw drops" That was the most awe-inspiring thing i've ever seen on drums.

  • Holy shit, this is amazing =p

  • hahahaaa

  • if you are not a fan of drumming... WATCH THIS!!!

    HOLY SH**!!

  • Buddy Rich in his prime - no one even close

    (Gene Krupa)
