I am a 65 year old woman who appreciates a good band. My favorite from my own generation is Doors, I still listen to. My son introduced me to Phish in the 90s. They took over Greatful Dead after Jerry Garcia's death. They are all PHDs in music, evident in their earlier albums I still listen to: Lawn Boy, Rift, Nectar, Junta. The musical development and sponteneity are amazing.

Reading the comments below - oh puhleeze grow up people! We all have ears that hear and either like or dislike certain kinds of music! Many bands have some of Phish's unique style used or copied in their music ! One of the things my ear hears when I listen to them is EACH instrument. You don't often hear each instrument with many bands - they all mush together and often terribly!

On that whole Neil Peart debate, Neil plays the easiest beats and just does crazy fills on his big ass drumset. Him and his band sound basically the same in every song. Fishman keeps up with way trickier rhythms and plays multiple styles.

Neil' kit is set up to play different styles as well which Rush does(not as spicy as Phish though). He also doesn't just do huge fills, he has multiple ghost notes in most of beats. I think Rush is a great band. That being said there is something Phish can make you do that Rush cant..... dance.
