it is very likely that the lions are hungry and when a lion is hungry, it will eat anything. especially since wild lions dont know any humans up close, they think that they are a source of food. captive bred lions are better fed so you dont often hear about lion attacks in captivity. but my guess is you have heard about a few stories that blow it way out of proportion. every animal's instinct is to survive and a captive animal is given what it needs so it generally doesn't want to hurt people.

I tend to blame man-eater beasts when they slip up on humans doing no more than trying to live their lives. Perfect example; I just watched a 45 minute show on here about the endangered Siberian tigers in the Thunder buns borderland between India and Bangladesh. The tigers are known and feared man-eaters as well as endangered. They murder 30-40,000 unarmed people per year that gets reported. One came into their little village about twilight and walked right past a goat and murdered little Rolla
