  • Bass player also passed away in 1984.. rip

  • I would like to mention they're name is spelt spiral starecase** :) and this is an amazing song

  • The bass player is grooving. That style that he's playing had a melody other than the writer strike crap you hear today. Most of it has the same 12 notes over and over to a beat of a washing machine or dryer. Maybe a octive change or a 6 note mixup back to the same

  • Hard to believe that they are a one-hit wonder. This is the only video that shows the group live that I have found.

  • Here in Alabama, we still love our boy Pat. Fantastic voice.

  • ILOVED growing up in the 70's!!

  • thatz so smooth@jhooperdean!! and hey@tommyg524 i would gladly be their red carpet!! no one in this universe can say that the 60's70's80's and early 90's were not the best of the finest music ever made, it is actually stupid to make comparisons, but sometimes i do, so i will not judge! anyways this is prime top cut right down to the bone music, i only wish they could have made more songs, oh well hey? PEACE

  • I love this song more today than yesterday.

  • I couldnt have said it any better. Give me back Kennedy, and patti Page, Elivs, anyday, I'll gladly lay down the red carpet.

  • @KingofRockandRoll I love your comment ,one of the funniest of all time.

  • 1969: I'm back in high school again. Saw them on afternoon TV and the song stayed with me ever since.

  • Larry Csonka on bass steppin' bad!

  • Nobody gave a fuck back then, and it should still be like that!

  • check out the bassist's sweet dance moves

  • @huntert311 I agree- we watch this all the time @ work and try to duplicate his sweet moves. I will probably never be able to grow and epic mustache like his though

  • Upton is playing a Gibson ES-175, it looks like mine (note the tailpiece) -- mine is a sunburst, 1968 -- I wonder if his is also a 1968 model?!!!

  • I ALWAYS thought that was a chick singing.

  • boy i would never have put that face with his voice!

  • What a fantastic song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • fuck bruno mars

  • @KingofRockandRoll511 a little racist are we?? do you talk that way in church too?

  • @KingofRockandRoll511 I must agree with you on the nigger issue and the sucking of cocks.

  • @flatgone your a fuckin idiot !!!

  • @m88a88k Can't you come with something more original than "fuckin idiot?" How much weaker could your vocabulary possibly be? Don't try to match wits with someone who has an education. You are not equipped for it. It isn't my fault you were raised by a crackhead mother in a trailer park. Focus your hate on someone else that deserves it....like your deadbeat dad or the kids that used to slap you down in the trailer park.

  • I will "ALWAYAS" FEEL the same way about a VERY BEAUTIFUL lady that I really love with all my heart from Pleasant Grove, Texas... I LOVE YOU VERY MUVH Nicole with lots of LOVE...from Prom Perfecto Rodriguez II

    (fashion designer 11

  • What guitar is Upton playing in this vid? Looks like a Byrdland...but the switch is on the top. Guild had that body style with a switch on top.....but it doesn't look like a Guild headstock.

  • I love watching that bass player dance, now that's effing funny shite!!!

  • @skeetersbiscuits Best dancing ever! Take THAT Michael Jackson!

  • Austin Power in his college days.

  • Written by Pat Upton.

More like Larry Csonka as someone posted earlier :))

  • @Purple1984Rain Right!

He does look just like Csonka!

  • I totally love this song. My God it brings back such wonderful memories of a simpler time. A time before cell phones, answering machines, iphones, personal computers and all the complexities of today. It reminds me of the carefree, happy days of my childhood.

  • @riteguycruz they did have answering machines

  • @riteguycruz You and me both, my friend

  • 11 people remembered what day it was and got bitch smacked by a rocket ship.

  • happy song :)

  • Tha way the bass player moves....too funny :))

  • @texasjohnnyboy &@guyNbluejeans...I am a professionally trained alto and this song is pitched in the sweet spot for my range. Maybe that is why this was one of my favorite songs in college....!

  • Everybody sing! (at 1:10)

  • For my darling Dan

    always,

    your baby

  • I used to think this was a song by the late Paul Davis(I Go Crazy) because he

used to cover it in his live shows. No wonder it did'nt come up under his name.

  • TERRIFIC song - one of my alltime faves by Spiral Starecase. Thanks for sharing it here.

  • I still watch this just to watch Csonka do his version of the "Super Bowl Shuffle".

  • My favorite 1 hit wonder song of all time!

  • the bass player just made me love this song even more!!

  • i can't see the fish with the fancy foot work - the bass?

  • That bass player is cooooooooolllll !!!!!!!

  • Heard this in the car today. Never heard of the name Spiral Starecase before. I've heard this song for over 30 years. Never thought it was a chick singer, but I had envisioned an entirely different looking singer completely. This guy looks nerdy so maybe this is why it was a one hit wonder? Curious how a guy that sings that good with such a tight backing band didn't have any more songs or hits since 1969. Seems odd, especially when you have crap bands regurgitating crap.

  • @dell4bq OMG I swear I could've written your comment word for word... WORD FOR WORD. I was looking for the song and it showed a long list of artists with songs of the same name and none of them jumped out at me. I finally clicked this one and was like "who the heck is Spiral Staircase"??? LOL! I totally pictured a different singer...

  • @LaRue1212 cool at least I'n not the only one... I checked out their Wiki page and apparently the singer stayed active in a much smaller role doing session work and was also working with Ricky Nelson and apparently played at the last gig Nelson did before he died.

  • Just watch the bass player...hilarious

  • @ifrit26

    It's like he's playing in a different song :))

  • I keep coming back to this video just for the base player's fancy footwork. LOL

  • Bought at wigan casino in 72 still have it first time seen this quality

  • hates this music .. busterd

  • One of the best 1 hit wonders of all time. Upton had a great set of pipes. you know this one's always in the mp3 player.

  • i love you hearbee this song id for you,,, miss you a lot,, iloveyou and i always will...

  • Love this song and the bass player is really jammin. He keeps it up throughout the whole song!

  • fancy foot work on the bass

  • @Verminimum TRUTH!!!

  • @Verminimum TRUTH!!! Check out Matchbox Twenty: You're So Real

Brian Yale on bass........ friggin' blew my mind the first time I heard it through headphones!!

  • @Verminimum it's mezmorizing

  • like if u think he is weird

  • i thought the people that sang this were the spinners.. im confused..

  • They look like the band at every wedding reception in the seventies. Spiral Staircase is jammin'!

  • Just how good is this? Just how wooden are they? I love it!!

  • Just how good is this? Superb

  • Is that Larry Csonka on Bass?

  • @rmg13021

    Very funny!!

  • My girlfriend laughed at the bass players dance steps; so I waltzed out the door....

  • hahaha hell yea this foo had the voice of a thousand muthafucken angels and the fucken bassist is too gangster he reminds me of a mobster

  • nice dance move.hahaha

  • 9 people hated you more today than yesterday : /

  • Check out that guy on bass in the back. That dude is hysterical, especially with that cool-ass seventies mustache.

  • Nice love song!!!

  • The bass drum is awesome

  • Pat Upton wrote this wonderful love song back in 1969 and 42 yrs later the lyrics still ring true

  • This is wisdom.

  • To Cocoa : Its been a year since you left us.. R.I.P. I Miss you Babygirl.....

  • 9 dislikes....have nobody to love.....

  • Such a lovely song ... :*

  • Bass players are cool, especially when they dance, and play the bass guitar at the same time. I love this song !

  • The bass players name is Bobby Raymond.

  • The correct name of the band is SPIRAL STARECASE. The spelling change was to avoid any legal issues with the movie Spiral Staircase.

  • The first tune that I ever got paid a hundred dollars to perform.. a lotta money when you're fifteen years old in 1972... club owners don't pay like that anymore... I dig your playlist n' I'll visit again... THANX !

  • The first tune that I ever got paid a hundred dollars to perform.. a lotta money when you're fifteen years old in 1972... club owners don't pay like that anymore... I dig your playlist n' I'll visist again... THANX !

  • For all these years I thought it was a girl doing the singing. Oh well.

  • @guyNbluejeans I'm on that same boat.

  • @guyNbluejeans Actually Diana Ross redid it so you might have heard her version

  • @Sakkara1331 Thanks. But it was in fact this fellow I'd been hearing for years. I'll have to checkout the talented Ross's version!:-)

  • @guyNbluejeans -- Never thought it was a lady singing it. Better get your ears checked. ;-)

  • @alan30189 If all those thumbs up I got mean anything, it looks like you better get your head examined.;;-)

  • @guyNbluejeans Even when you hear the singers name, Pat it still leaves the question.

  • @blindescape01 Well we can at least say he's probably a pretty decent fellow and did a nice job with the song. I'll just not have quite the same thoughts running through me head when I hear the song anymore the way I used to.

  • @guyNbluejeans same here. That's one ugly dude to boot. No wonder they were sort of an obscure radio only act, as I never saw these guys but have heard this song all my life.

  • @guyNbluejeans He's more handsome than me, so I can't fault him there. But in the future I'll turn this song off when it comes over the radio, as I just can't deal with what I know now and how I used to imagine the "babe" singing it being with me and us ... (*puke*) having some fun.

  • @guyNbluejeans I always thought this was a woman singing too!!

  • @guyNbluejeans You must be under 40

  • @hampthechamp57 I'm glad my youthfulness comes through.

  • @guyNbluejeans u must need a hearing aid then

  • @guyNbluejeans that's because HE was a fabulous soprano!

  • @texasjohnnyboy So, johnnyboy, I gather from your comment the more "fabulous" a guy sings soprano the more he sounds like a woman?

    Disturbing.

  • @guyNbluejeans I made a mistake... he's not really a soprano but, is more of an alto. I used the word fabulous because that is what he was. The majority of women are soprano and alto. The majority of men are more tenorish. There are no absolutes. Just mentioning that Upton (as displayed in this clip) used to work more in the alto range. He works in a range that is more common for women. In more recent times, Upton sings this tune in lower keys to accomodate his older voice.

  • @texasjohnnyboy Well there's no question he's a talented fellow. Thanks for sharing the insight!

  • GREAT SONG MAN WHOEVER POSTED THIS MY HAT OFF TO YOU NIKKI BABY I LOVE YOU

  • Another great song I love.

  • It really is all about the bassist. He has figured something out that the rest of us haven't.

  • It is a great bass line he has come up with. Another thing is that it is so rare for a singer to actually play guitar (love that Gibson) and he is pulling off some good jazz chords....long live the 60s charts

  • The lead singer looks like Mr. Brady Bunch ???? Cool song.

  • @dal1961 Oh.... to be 16 again & in love for the first time.....it is a cool song!!

  • Well that brought me right back to being a young kid; what a great song and an amazing time for music.

  • this band seems to enjoy playing this song. especially the bass player. i'm jealous!

  • ROLF, Cannon. Yeah, he's hittin' some one-nut notes, ain't he?

  • This song is awesome ! i heard this song when i was four years old....Born in 73!

  • I soiled myself singing along :(

  • Such a great song!!!

  • The bass player makes this song--he's got the head fake, the tippy toes and the jammin rhythm going on :)

  • I was born in the 60's and I started to think which is better, to be born in the 60's and enjoy the GREAT tv shows and music from the 60's, 70's and the 80's or have a mobile phone and the internet like today? Where is the rewind on this song, i i i i love the old days more than these damn days......

  • @thaijuan14 Understandable perspective and for good reasons, especially the economy. But years from now, people will be saying the same thing comparing their era to ours. Things will be worse for them like ours is from where we came. It's mostly relative but yes, you are partially right, sadly.

  • I may be a drummer, but that 1 sax sounds like 3 trumpets. LOL. and I don't know what I love more, the song or that bass player...toooo funny!!!!

  • the guy playing the sax looks like starsky from the 70s starsky and hutch series

  • One of the most memorable tunes from the sixties! Nice!

  • @Cleatusbodean That and I'm A Girl Watcher. These two songs together remind me of a friend who is always falling in love. Yay for romantic fools!

  • 8 people who dislike this song... go to hell!!!!!!!!!
