  • I remember they'd open the show with HELLO, and everyone was on board as soon as that first line was sung. Amazing fun...

  • Got the Rail promo picture to this day..... They were great Live..... Thanks!

  • Good band. Probably the best that was on all the Basement tapes IMO. Remind me of Triumph. Had they jumped on the Glam train, they probably coulda gotten bigger.

  • Rail baby!

  • saw them live - killer show - drummer was breaking ludwig 9000 sticks left and right

  • I had never seen this one either, only the two that got more airplay, 1-2-3-4 and Fantasy. great stuff. I bought all three of their CDs a couple years ago, and still love their stuff.

  • Gotta love Martha Quinn's lesbian haircut.

  • Ya know what? I don't think I've ever seen this before. I remember seeing 1-2-3-4 and Fantasy on MTV back in the day (but could never remember the name of the band), but this song I think this one passed me by. Kinda neat to finally see this!

  • I still want to "rail" Martha Quinn"

  • FYI--RAIL did not play the Memorial Stadium with BOC/Sabbath and Molly Hatchet. It was RIOT. Also Black Sabbath had DIO, not OZZY on vocals. 1980 Memorial Stadium, Heaven n Hell Tour. The Tour was actually called the Balck n Blue Tour.

  • Sweet Canadian Mullet, too~~~

  • This woulda been a good day, eh? Crap, I still have this on LP! Where's the time gone?

  • I saw rail at the Memorial Stadium in Seattle at Summer Jam 1980. Back then, Summer Jam was a rock show sort of like Ozzfest is now. Rail opened and were followed by Blue Oyster Cult, Molley Hatchet and Black Sabbath (Ozzy rocked!). Probably in the top 2 or 3 coolest concerts I ever went to...good times.

  • love the hair-bands!

  • they had Ronnie Montrose in the band for awhile in the mid 80s, killer concert

  • Never ever heard of this band when growing up. Shame.

  • The vid can't do justice to the energy this band repeatidly brought to the stage and gave to the crowd. One of those "right time, right place" moments in your life that you forget about until somebody posts a reminder like this. Thanks!

  • I love them. hung out with them in washington. in the early 80's awesome people and music. Love and miss those days!!!!

  • Just saw them here in Spokane at Pig Out In The Park last night. They were excellent!

  • My band 4play opened for Perrenial and Skyler the lead guitar player!! You can't forget Culprit from that time warp!!

  • @mrkbkk

    Oh HELL NO! Culprit Rules!

  • Great times! This was the biggest Seattle band until Queensryche broke. And who could forget the band Perrenial?

  • they are coming back

  • i use to have this record but cant finding it on cd or even i tunes .

  • I can't believe that I found this on YouTube. Amamzing! I'm from the Northwest and followed Rail and their rise and subsequent flattening out. I just cannot understand why they didn't get the fame and success they deserved. Terry Young...his vocals are phenomenal! For those of us priveleged to be a part of that time, we were lucky. Backseat Lover still makes me smile....big time! It's awesome to see them here. Thanks so much for posting it!

  • I saw Rail several times in '80, '81 and '82 in the Seattle/Tacoma area! The regularly appeared at Bronco Billy's in Federal Way, WA and at The Back 40 in Tacoma, WA. Seriously, I could not get enough of them. Such a high energy and fun band!!!

In 1988 I started vocal training with David Kyle in Seattle only to find out that Terry Young had been training with him for years and was scheduled just before my appointments!!!! OMG!!! I brought my album and next lesson and Terry signed it.

  • un dia fui a verlos en un concierto llamado remember marysol, tocaron una y tumbaron la musica, parece que no le pagaron a las bandas y nadie mas toco,en Puerto Rico como pal 84

  • Saw them at the Starry Night and the Copper Penny in Portland back "in the day" when they still dressed like this. Great band, AND THEY STILL EXIST!

  • i remember seeing them at the lynnwood rollaway! awesome concert!

  • Unreal.. Partied to them like every other week-end.. Thank you for the good memory..

  • I Saw Rail In Lewiston,Id. in 82 at Casey's Then opened for them with the band''Redline" on April 14 1984 for 500 people on our first gig and my 19 th birthday(legal drinking age in Idaho then)They had just won the basement tapes. We had a big party at my girlfriends apt she is now my wife of 25 year's-Kelly the drummer came over and we talked for hours-He even talked about tring to get us to open for Night Ranger and them at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman-not a bad first gig!

  • No way. I was at this concert where they filmed this video. It was done in the Juanita High School field house (which is huge like a small arena). There was another band that performed and they were OK. Then Rail came on and there was a marked difference. After all these years...

  • In the 70's, I saw these guys play in a barn in Port Angeles, WA. They were "Rail & Company" then. About 9 years later, I played in a band that did 2 shows with them as "Rail". They were great then, and they're great now!! Hope you're feelin good, Terry....

  • I remember being in highschool up in WA throughout the early 80s; I remember the Basement Tapes competition clearly. I also remember the 2nd video that Rail made as the award for winning the competition...however I forgot what the name of that 2nd song was. These guy were huge locally for several years.

  • En los 80's fueron apadrinados por MTV y esta banda de Seattle calo muy profundo en una islita del caribe llamada Puerto Rico. Tocaron junto a Saga, Heart, Cheap Trick, Dokken, Blue Oyster Cult, Pat Travels y The Producers.

  • i live in washington state and i had the chance to grow up with bands like Rail. i have seen them many times thoughout the years. they are one of the few bands from the 80's thats still have the nack and the talent to sound as good now as they did then. THANKS RAIL

  • Dunno if this ha been mentioned already, but:

Mtv actually had a nationwide phone-in "Battle of the Video Bands" (Basement Tapes), and this tune won.

  • this singer looks like a pissedd off chick

  • so uhh... what is this song and what is this band? I have no ideo how I found this video...

  • The band is "RAIL" from Bellevue, Washington.

The song is "HELLO" from their first album after winning MTV's Basement Tapes in 1982.

Really a good group of guys. Too bad they couldn't absorb the Corporate Music demands upon them and really take over the scene. They've remained what they always were: great musicians who love to play & entertain.

  • still watching...this song kinda just lives on and on..

  • The good ol' days...

  • is das im blauen ein mann oder ne frau lol sieht ja voll scheiss aus

  • I remember this in classic Mtv. I think I was about 6 or 7 years old I loved this song

  • Oh my gosh RAIL!!! how wonderful it is to find you again this takes me back to the days when you played at the 121 , or Gentle Bens in Boise, y,all would remember us if you saw again love you guys!!1

  • I've seen 'em in Lewiston at Casey's, and the Lewis Clark Hotel, as well as Moscow at Rats, Peabody's in CDA, The Cotton Club, When they came that direction, it was like the Scorpions were coming to town, a big fat ass party!

  • This KILLS IT!! Who was the editor? The aggressive camera work blows my mind!!

  • OMG, I remember these guys!

I remember Rick Knotts mainly because we both used to deliver the Seattle Times out of the same paper shack just when they were just starting up with the band.

A few years later, I thought they were going to get really big. By then I had gone to work in radio and would hear their music from time-to-time.

    Great stuff!

  • One of my faves from way back. Went to their concert in Longview Wa. and it gave me an excuse to ask the girl I had the hots for to it. That was the start of a short but very mmm eventful relationship. Thanks Rail, I owe you one.

  • Saw them at Casey's in Lewiston Idaho. Casey's was a divey litle health code violation ups taris of a watch shop amde famous in the book "Hammer of the Gods" about Led Zepplin.

It mentions then Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck throwing his amp out the window.

Rail played there in 82-82 and kicked me into music for the next 20 yrs.

    Crazy...

  • Amazing voice.

  • Tremenda cancion de apertura los disfrute cuando vinieron a Puerto Rico para los años 80en Caguas

  • These were our idols in Seattle. My friends and I started a band in Seattle in 1982. We always talked about 'RAIL' when we jammed. We were like, "just think of RAIL, we can be the next RAIL". Too cool. Those dudes have since quit playing, but I still hack around on guitar.

  • These guys used to play at Mr. Luckys in Denver when i worked there. no one compared to them... amazing!!! they were also the best behaved band... lol!! we even went to visit them once in Seattle, really nice guys... never pulled that one before but it was fun. great talent!!!

  • I seen Rail at the capitol theater in yakima wa.

in the 80's they opened for Joan Jett and kick her ass,, the crowd screamed for rail the whole time,,,,awesome!!!!

  • Ha ha. Wow! I'm from Seattle and this band was huge around Seattle when I was in high school. Too cool. Perrenial was another Seattle band that had limited success. Ha ha. Too cool. My best friends former girlfriend dated the bass player. Too cool.

  • Randy Nelson?

  • Perrenial i have the 4 song demo they did with your the ones. mark welling signed it. Seattle had many cool 80's bands

  • Ahhhhh, memories... Am I really this old? Damn. Thanks for posting this, regardless!

  • I was fortunate enough to see these guys perform live through the years here in Seattle. You have to see their cover of Rush's "Working Man" video. They nail it. They all have amazing talent.

    -Gary

  • cool song, great junior high school song too

  • Few koolio'z and this vid will give you the chillzzz

  • Few koolio'z and this vid will give you the chillzzz

  • I still watch this video once a month, just to get a rush...

  • Just love this song. All these years later and it still gets me going like mad. Can count on it to give me energy every time. Saw them open for Van Halen, my second-ever concert as a wee one, they were *incredible*; as talented as they appear on the vid, they are in concert. The singer is amazing...that voice!!

  • Seen then in the early 80's at the cotton club & at a N. Idaho Collage gig they did. They rocked the house !Good times!

  • They play played at my high school back in the 80's. They were very good.

  • I saw them play in Oregon, they opened for TOTO...even though I went to see TOTO, I knew of Rail from MTV's Basement Tapes and really only knew of the song Hello, I have to admit, they were really good, and I was very glad they were the opening act, hell, I would have been happy if they were the headliners and TOTO opened for them....and I voted for them also when the competition was going on, they really sort of out classed the other bands...

  • Rail rocked the Northwest with a vengeance! I saw them several times. Kelly was an incredible drummer, he was an animal! Terry James Young (bass and vocals)was also dynamic and impressive live. Who can forget the furry boots!

  • I was married to one of Kelly's cousins.

  • this song gets me more pumped up than any song on earth. Wish i could have seen them in the day.

  • I remember calling and voting for the like 50 times on that MTV Basement tapes contest. I thought that guy had the coolest voice ever!

  • These guys should have been bigger, I remember seeing them in Salt Lake around 1985.
