I just heard a mocking bird I think outside my window. I thought it was a cat, then an owl chick (because the owls were around), but it had to be a (mocking) bird! I'm still not sure, but this video is totally spot on (specially your commentary at the end!).
One of these used to harass my cat until he ended up grabbing him and I saw when he did it buy decided not to save the bird since he would sing at 1am every night. My cat had a nice meal that day.
Catbird mews sound completely different. This mockingbird sounds like he's impersonating a specific cat in the neighborhood. The chipmunk noise... that's just special.
@S0lidState Think about it for half a second....MOCKing Bird. They are named that because they are known for mimicry. Other birds do this, but the Northern Mockingbird is the most known in North America. They are known to imitate insects, squirells, the cat as in this video and car alarms. They do not fool other birds, but sometimes very well enough to trick humans. They are interesting, I just was looking them up because they are my State Bird (FL) Pretty eggs too.
OMG! LMAO!!!! It's soooo hilarious. I don't believe it. Mocking bird meows like a cat? C'mmon guys, cats don't fly. How do Mocking brids know cat sounds? Tell you what guys. We have 2 cats in our house. You shoulda seen them when I upped the volume of the bird's meow sound...LOL!
Ha, I'd forgotten about this video until someone replied to my comment (good luck with that, no1taylorlautnerfan). Fitting, as they've been on my mind lately. One has been waking me up in the middle of the night but all I can do is smile at how interesting its calls are. I've also seen a lot of them harassing hawks the past couple of months, I guess since it was nesting season, and that is always entertaining. They're fearless.
yea mocking birds will make any sound they hear in there habit to confuse predators. iv heard one make small hoot noises before and along with cicada and cricket like noises.
Thomas Jefferson had a pet mockingbird named "Dick" who he taught to talk. He'd sit on Jefferson's shoulder and say "Wanna bath" to guests in the Exec mansion. I wonder if they took the hint?
This morning on my roof, I witnessed a very intelligent mockingbird reclaiming their territory. The chimney has a well established bird hierarchy. Pigeons out rank starlings and crows out rank everyone. Just after dawn I saw a mockingbird land on the chimney near 5-6 pigeons. The pigeons inch closer to the mocking bird, trying to shoo him away. He flutters, meows like a cat and the pigeons fly away. With in a couple of minutes starlings and house sparrows joined the him.
ha! my cat Roger was lying next to me half asleep and as soon as the bird started singing like a cat, Roger's head jerked up and he looked in my direction, wondering where the cat was!
omg the one near my house meows too he did it last year but hasnt done it this year yet it was so cool tho my mom and i heard him do it and thought we were nuts till he kept doing it all summer it is sooo cool ilove them they are my fav bird
we have one that sings all night too.. =\ I've always wanted to hear it mimic something other than just birds but so far I've just heard it mimic other birds..
@yeahwellmaybe I have a baby mockingbird with a broken wing on my arm right now, and she eats food right out of my hand, i want her/him to learn mocking bird songs.
How great that you caught this! Do you think he is mimicking a catbird, or a cat? There is just nothing like these incredible, talented birds! Thank you for posting this!

Try burping loudly in front of one. The more you burp, the crankier they get.
Really, it's fun watching them try to imitate somthing they can't.

I both love and hate mockingbirds. They're great because they've got an amazing repertoire of songs, and is actually quite pleasant to listen to.
But not right outside my window at 3 AM IN THE MORNING.
That meowing was kinda cute though. Maybe I should teach "my" mockingbird a song or two that I like.
