There are 4 or 5 different versions of the song, all studio between 1978 or 79 to 1981. He had several albums that appeared to be release "regionally". I had a friend in the Detroit area back at the time who had at least 3 different studio version and not just different mixes of the same performance. He was a DJ too.
No, I'm 99% certain the sound is not the studio version as I've listened to that version hundreds of times; this one is different and I believe just a very good live performance.
The music of today doesn't hold a candle to the insight of Thomas Dolby.
He is more than a brilliant writer, his arranging and innovative use of experimental keys delivers music unlike any other on this planet. Look at the audience just sit
with their jaws open on this video. They can't even take it all in. His boldness is appreciated by few, and to me, the world is a better place now that I've truly
Truely a great song and and superb performance, as good as if not better than the album version.
And what a prophetic song ... (is Thomas a time traveler?) I wish the Deepwater Horizon oil rig run by BP was instead a windmill. And I wish Chernobyl was instead a windmill.
When will we learn to obey Murphy's Law... Wind Power and Solar Power are the safest way to power our world.
I bet I still have this (betamax release, yikes!) videotape in my mum's attic. I recall getting the vid for xmas when I was about 15yrs old... would be nice if EMI released a DVD copy (hint, hint!)
This looks like it is from the Riverside gig that i have uploaded from 1983, shown on the BBC, but this track wasn't on it when it was shown on TV in 1983. Where have you got this from? is it a new release?
they don't make music like they used to

Not underrated at all. I've always thought he was the best thing to come out of this genre. The term underrated is overrated.

@redmikele Thomas was quite successful in the first half of the 1980's and highly regarded at the time.

@redmikele When they release Blinded Me With Science, every thing else got overshadowed. Too bad 'cause you're right!

I find the lyrics to this song so inspiring. The melody and arrangement draw me in, but the words.... the message is what makes it for me.

This is Dolby's most prolific song, hands down. It is so ethereal compared to any other piece of work he's accomplished thus far...
