We used our 800 pound lifeguard boats to ride 'em. I know live in Sausalito and at 55 I learned to surf at Bolinas. 30 years in Corporate America and this is like time stands still. Take it easy, I was converting from celcius to farenheit and forgot to change the unit. I meant 80F. It seems like lake Erie, the warmest lake is often at 20C+ for 3 months in the summer. Lake Superior's much colder, but it was unusually swimmable when I went in late August/ early September this year.

In New York City, there is something called the "Polar Bear Club." They're a bunch of hearty souls that actually wait until the dead of winter & then they go to the beach, & let me add, that they don't wear thermosuits. The men dress in topless bathing trunks & the women in regular women's bathing suits. Decades ago, it was an enormous group. Now most of the members are aging. They claim that its vigorous & healthy to do this. Personally, I would be afraid to get a pneumonia.
@boarderforlife32 You don't have to live in California to be passionate about surfing. They probably get a lot of waves to themselves, which in my opinion totally makes it worth it! Part of the thrill probably comes from the uniqueness of surfing in a place where many people don't get out there and try. These guys are awesome. I am from the Canaries and I was a FES in Illinois in 1985. I recall visiting Lake MIchigan before ariving at my final location and meeting some Michigan surfers that invited me to surf the lake; It was a small day and we surfed by some huge pipeline that went into the lake. Cold as hell, but hey.......no sharks....
We do get waves like this during the summer occasionally. I was out jetskiing and surfing a couple of weeks ago on the southern tip of lake Michigan in Gary and we had five foot waves that are easily surfable. They were bigger then the waves in this video.

As adventurous as I am, no one could get me to touch that water in the winter. The discomfort of the cold outweighs any pleasure that can be derived from the surfing even in a wet suit. You've got to have a certain amount of nerve in you to do this.

It has a lot to do with wind, pressure changes, and storms. The lake is suprisingly 108 miles wide and over 300 miles long and some of the deepest spots reach to over a thousand feet deep so there is a lot of water to be moved and the second it hits a shallow spot or a sand bar all the water breaks and then it is easy to surf. The waves in this video are considerably small to where i am from, grand haven michigan. Last week i surfed a 12 foot wave and when a storm hits they reach that high avrg.

Hell yeah! Well, since I'll be banished from a 10 minute walk from the ocean for the next 3 years living in the Chicagoland area, I was worried that my boards would be sitting gathering dust. Surf is surf, waves are waves, and I'll paddle out with my 7mm suit, booties and gloves with the rest of these guys.
I love this video! My family is from Hawaii, so I learned out there. But I live in South Bend, and for the last 5 years I've been driving up to Saint Joe's or New Buffalo when theres surf. Now I finally got a hood and gloves, so hopefully I'll be out there till January. Once your a surfer, you'll do anything for the ride.
I surf in lake michigan South Haven South Beach and it is really quite hard to surf a short board there is no salt, so the lake is not as buoyant as the ocean. It's really fun to get a nice wave in the fall need a nice wet suit, hah it gets really cold without one, never surfed in mid winter tho i think it would be fun, maybe this year.
do you see a single shortboard in this vid? if anything its the opposite of what you said. you cant get as much speed to catch small waves like this on a shortboard as you can on a longboard. if i were surfing these, i would probably use like a 7'6"funboard or a longboard.
I love all this stuff that people post about how you can't surf lakes, you can't surf rivers and so on.. All I can say is keep thinking inside any box you can find guys.
Respect to the surfers on the lakes. I surf my local tidal bore here in the UK, and I would love to surf a moving wave in freshwater. Maybe one day.

The men dress in topless bathing trunks & the women in regular women's bathing suits. Decades ago, it was an enormous group. Now most of the members are aging. They claim that its vigorous & healthy to do this. Personally, I would be afraid to get a pneumonia.

Part of the thrill probably comes from the uniqueness of surfing in a place where many people don't get out there and try. These guys are awesome. I am from the Canaries and I was a FES in Illinois in 1985. I recall visiting Lake MIchigan before ariving at my final location and meeting some Michigan surfers that invited me to surf the lake; It was a small day and we surfed by some huge pipeline that went into the lake. Cold as hell, but hey.......no sharks....

We do get waves like this during the summer occasionally. I was out jetskiing and surfing a couple of weeks ago on the southern tip of lake Michigan in Gary and we had five foot waves that are easily surfable. They were bigger then the waves in this video.

As adventurous as I am, no one could get me to touch that water in the winter. The discomfort of the cold outweighs any pleasure that can be derived from the surfing even in a wet suit. You've got to have a certain amount of nerve in you to do this.

It has a lot to do with wind, pressure changes, and storms. The lake is suprisingly 108 miles wide and over 300 miles long and some of the deepest spots reach to over a thousand feet deep so there is a lot of water to be moved and the second it hits a shallow spot or a sand bar all the water breaks and then it is easy to surf. The waves in this video are considerably small to where i am from, grand haven michigan. Last week i surfed a 12 foot wave and when a storm hits they reach that high avrg.

Given your user name, and your last scentence, I am assuming you are from Hawaii. I love this video! My family is from Hawaii, so I learned out there. But I live in South Bend, and for the last 5 years I've been driving up to Saint Joe's or New Buffalo when theres surf. Now I finally got a hood and gloves, so hopefully I'll be out there till January. Once your a surfer, you'll do anything for the ride.

I surf in lake michigan South Haven South Beach and it is really quite hard to surf a short board there is no salt, so the lake is not as buoyant as the ocean. It's really fun to get a nice wave in the fall need a nice wet suit, hah it gets really cold without one, never surfed in mid winter tho i think it would be fun, maybe this year.

do you see a single shortboard in this vid? if anything its the opposite of what you said. you cant get as much speed to catch small waves like this on a shortboard as you can on a longboard. if i were surfing these, i would probably use like a 7'6"funboard or a longboard.

I love all this stuff that people post about how you can't surf lakes, you can't surf rivers and so on.. All I can say is keep thinking inside any box you can find guys.
Respect to the surfers on the lakes. I surf my local tidal bore here in the UK, and I would love to surf a moving wave in freshwater. Maybe one day.
