  • Hey I just figured something out, you know how people are always like talking about I IV V progressions in blues and stuff? This totally makes sense now. If you're playing a blues shuffle in the key of C, go from C, (the I), to F (the IV), to G (the V). YAY

  • very helpful video thanks

  • I like this guy he's cool, He goes into detail and it's not confusing I'm subscribing.

  • Thank you so much for clearly explaining the basics! I can't wait to get these books and start studying!

  • OH MY GOSH...

    I already know all this.

    WTF.

Band class really does teach ya something :P

  • i been playing guitar for a while but i never study guitar theory i hope learning this is going to help me

  • @lostguitarartist Same here bro , I've been playing for 2 years now and I'm just now starting on Scales lol!

  • @metalfreak4677 Nothing wrong with that, run at your own pace.

  • you're an excellent teacher. thank you for these videos!!!

  • lol 4:42 .

  • @Crea80r ?

  • @Crea80r ???

  • @Crea80r boob itch

  • You can play without knowing this stuff but if you want to be able to talk music it really helps to know what your talking about.

  • nice job

  • Good lesson. I like it.

  • i worte down this shit, first time since skool ended

  • Your videos really opened up my eyes and eliminated so many mental blocks...Thanks so much.

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • How the hell should i know the notes? D,G etc,...?

  • by learning to them my friend, the best analogy is that your family would not have the same voices, therefore you will be able to know who calls you even if you are not looking. the same principle apply to the notes D, G, etc... by familiarizing how they sound, you will be able to know how to duplicate them in an instrument like guitar or a keyboard.

this is also true on how musicians are able to tune their guitar by ears.

  • i dont know if i want to play guitar or piano :(

  • Piano its easier. lol

  • @RioUchiha damn you!!!!!!

  • You should play what ever your heart tells you to play

  • I play both im self taught on all the instruments i play they are both great, Dont strap yourself to one instrument im watching this though cause im not gonna lie i can shred and play like crazy and play some great shit but i have not to great musical theory so yeah

  • Same here, you don't need to know any of this to actually be able to play. Plus you develop your own "sound" alot faster.

  • play both... theres no rules :) playing more than one instrument mean you gotta know thoery tho so you get better at both a little faster. i only really know guitar but im starting to get to grips with keyboards too now

  • music theory changed my whole aspect on music. it has helped sooooooo much

  • its one hell of an uphill struggle at first though haha!

  • You look better in this video dude. Lighting must have been poor. But thanks for the great instruction.

    Oak

  • Dude, you are very helpful, I'm eternally grateful for this, sir.

  • i dont get the different scales.

  • Scales are easy bro, keys and all that shit are what I don't understand. A scale is just a bunch of notes, get rusty cooley's rockhouse video: Fretboard Autopsy.

  • @bpguitarist7 Dude if you actually fully understood what a scale is you would know what keys are lol.

  • Thank you. I actually know the stuff in this particular lesson that you did here however I'm attempting to learn theroy. I been actively playing for 20+ years and I can play but I dabbled in a little theroy and just what little bit I learned and put into practice has totally changed my outlook on the guitar and it's musical possibilities. So in short I'm re-learning the guitar. It's hard but you make it so I can understand it. Thank You very much!

  • Thanks Bruce !!!

  • The other members of the beatles used open tunings to play skiffle.John Lennons relative taught them how to do this. The Paul stuffs probably a myth.

  • Hi Adilinar if you are going up the scale its sharp and if moving down its flat. Both are correct depending on the direction you are moving.Whatever you thought you heard is wrong.

  • I heard somewhere, that, the correct way to say C# is actually to say Db .. And the same with all sharps ... You have to say them Flat to "correctly" say it in a musical language ...

    ??

  • yes, i use it too.. i prefer to say Db than C# but its just preference ^^

  • the reason why people call something such as C# and Db is for scale purposes. Some scales have Db instead of C# and vice-versa. this is to avoid the musician to get confused in whatever Key they are playing...

look up "The circle of Fifths" to get a better understanding on when to call things flat or sharps :)

  • yeah :) i kind of started getting into music theory and answering the why's in music lol and i just figured this out.. lol thanks it makes sense now :) ... and i strongly recommend anyone to start getting into music theory cause you'll understand music wayyy better

  • wrong

  • i have my ap music theory test tomorrow! hahah

  • Nice video, thanks!

  • shit am studieng music theory its tough fucking hard

  • me too man, im a music major and am taking music theory 1, it is tough, i had no knowledge in reading music before the semester started, but from the beginning till now i have not given up and im glad i haven't, hang in there man, you will get it

  • im thinking about taking music theory 1 and i'm very much interested but I would not be majoring in music. I would be minoring but I don't know if I could do it... I really want to.

  • keep at it, you'll get it eventually

  • how much are these books and can i get them at music stores? or just on that site?

  • I just got his Music Theory Workbook for Guitar Volume 1. I paid like $20 on amazon for it.

  • thanks for helping me out

  • All of that to advertise a book? I expected more tbh, but hey as long as people learn something then I'm good. If you didn't know this though then you have a looooong way to go. It will not happen over night, trust me.

  • who cares about your stupid churches or spelling... do you really expect religious people to spell anyways? they are not very intelligent to begin with so just be happy that you can understand them :)

    now back to the video....

  • I can't understand why anyone would want to make a generalized character attack toward any group of people for the sake of making a point.

  • i bet it is hard for you to understand......

  • Hey stupid,

I wonder if you were aware that the following are religious people: Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Mozart, Thomas Jefferson etc., etc. - where do you suppose a Mensa like you fits in on that list?

Why don't you take a little time, educate yourself just a wee bit, and use that head of yours for something other than a hat holder, okay?

    Run along now dummy

  • MLK, and Ghandi while very nice people.. i suppose.. they are by no means intelligent. Mozart and Thomas Jefferson were fairly smart for their day and age but eh.. they were freemasons...................................

  • the B string first fret is not middle c, middle c is A string third fret. jeez get your shit straight

  • B string 1st fret is concert middle C. The guitar is a transposing instrument therefore if you see music written for guitar you will play C on the A string 3rd fret if you see a middle C written but the pitch that you are hearing is an octave below middle C on the piano. If you aren't convinced go to a piano and check :)

Conversely if you are playing music not written for guitar you will need to transpose it up one octave to play it at the correct pitch.

  • wow your right, but why don't they put an 8ve sign on all guitar music? i swear music theory is ridden with this stuff,

    all apologies

  • Glad to hear that helped. There are many instruments that are transposing and some by other than an octave. For instance a trumpet is transposed by a whole step. Sometimes the music for these instruments indicate that they are transposed. For instance a trumpet part may say Bb but most time it is just assumed that it is transposed. This is the same with guitar music and thus the confusion that comes about from this situation.

  • wow thanks! u made me understand what i new

  • This is great help, I've just started lessons on guitar theory and this is a great help for me. You make it very easily understood and very thorough. Thank you!

  • Wow, i'm halfway thru this video and I have to say, you are a genius. This is how I need things explained to me. So detailed and yet to the point. Wow!

  • If you were going from F to E would that be a whole step or half step since your only going up 1 fret?

  • Each fret is one half step so F to E equals one half step

  • Great man!
