@jtbrown17 And don't forget the clucking pig! Come check out my playlists (including commercials) for every year since 1900 - it' s a musical time machine. chuck
Wow, this brings back memories! The rough animation has shades of Jay Ward's work, but probably not. Never tried GM's corn flakes, but sure liked the ad! Thanks for posting.
I will never forget one day, as a kid back in the 60's, when I knew this commercial well, another commercial came on for some kind of car-- I forget the name of the toy car, but I think it was battery-operated-- and it was the visual for that car, but the crazy singing of THIS one. I laughed my head off, wondering how that could happen.
@mizzmeekz Country Corn Flakes are available for sale on amazon.com, but it looks as if they're available only in packs of ten and in packs of seventy.
@supersporkspank I read that they're often sold at the convenience stores at some Exxon stations because Kellogg's won't allow their breakfast cereals to be sold there. Something about the rival companies both having a tiger mascot.
Odd, especially since neither the original recipe nor the current one have it. The clucking pig and the mooing chicken make me believe that Gen Mills wanted us to know that it was different. Sounds plausible that the rice was a desiccant until a cheaper/more convenient chemical came along.
haahahahahahah my mom was telling me about this commercial then she told me to look it up. && i must say, it's pretty annoying... but it has a certain... "ring" to it. hahahaha.
Grant Wood died 18 years before this commercial. The painting was called American Gothic because the window on the farm house has a Gothic arch. (See Gothic cathedrals).
Some commercials you just never forget. This is one of them. Man, this song has been going through my head for more then 40 years. It's good to finally hear it again.
A CLASSIC commercial! A hilarius take-off on an American icon and a clever catchy song. It blows away the crap that passes for commercials these days.
I remembering reading that Nan Wood (Grant Wood's sister, and the model for the woman in the original American Gothic) was still alive when this commercial came out. She sued General Mills for "demeaning" the painting. Don't know if she ever got anything out of it.
Country Corn Flakes were introduced in 1964 with a Ray Bolger-style scarecrow; I wore their scarecrow costume for Halloween that year! The brand itself is still available (minus rice!), but it is sold primarily as a cheap alternative to Kellogg's; it is an eligible cereal for the WIC program for children.
This was orignally seen in 1965-'66, and was one of General Mills' "offbeat" ads designed to sell this product. It did- but try and find it on your supermarket shelf today!
Actually, I wonder if the voice is that of Judy Henske, the queen of the beatniks. I saw it forty years ago and laughed my a** off. I saw it again two days ago and had the same reaction! Brilliant ad!
I don't know either. But I remember seeing this and thinking the guy looked a lot like Jethro from Homer and Jethro. Couldn't have been him, though--they were hawking a competitor--Kellogg's Corn Flakes!
No fooling! There is no equivalent to imdb for ads. The two Gothics are spot on. And the voices are really authentic for that whole hootenanny thing of the mid-sixties. I mentioned to someone else that the woman's voice sounds very much like Judy Henske, a prominent folk/beatnik singer of the late fifties and sixties. She used to perform on the same stage as Bob Dylan. WHo know? The male voice could be that of Dylan's! (Or not...)
I remember this ad! Boyd do I feel old? Back in the days when some commercials used imagination. These days it's how much CGI you can get into the things.
And rice, too. And the minimal amount of insect fragments permitted by law--that makes me antsy. like the 'sodium erthyorbate" in hot dogs--actually earthworms
I remember this commercial being shown during Green Acres, If you play it backwards it says Arnolds dead.

@1913massacre Yes they are. Apparently, the original version didn't "crunch" enough, so they added rice.

No its primarily corn but it also has rice to make it more crisp and resistant to moisture.

I think that she did win some settlement, like having the ad pulled. But that just added to the cereal's already cult status!
