  • I remember this commercial being shown during Green Acres, If you play it backwards it says Arnolds dead.

  • i love this commercial its so funny new country cornflakes new country cornflakes

  • @jtbrown17 And don't forget the clucking pig! Come check out my playlists (including commercials) for every year since 1900 - it' s a musical time machine. chuck

  • You know I had to play this!

  • Wow, this brings back memories! The rough animation has shades of Jay Ward's work, but probably not. Never tried GM's corn flakes, but sure liked the ad! Thanks for posting.

  • Use to go 'round singin' this when I was a kid! -{thanks for posting!}

  • it definitely sounds like "they're made from porn"

  • This song has been in my head for 50 years and I still can't get enough of it!

  • NEW COUNTRY CORN FLAKES

    Made with... Rice?

  • @Starfoxteam1 I notice that! Was it made with rice and corn? My whole family used to love watching this commerical! We laughed so hard!

  • Are they saying "made with rice" at :39?!

  • @1913massacre Yes they are. Apparently, the original version didn't "crunch" enough, so they added rice.

  • I love this ad! Ever since I saw this on a "retromercial" compilation DVD, I have had this quirky little song stuck in my head!

  • I found this and showed it to my parents. They laughed and said that brings back a lot of memories.

  • Grant Wood was spinning in his grave! Great ad though!

  • Catchy little tune, and a neat take-off on "American Gothic". Thanks for posting!

  • I will never forget one day, as a kid back in the 60's, when I knew this commercial well, another commercial came on for some kind of car-- I forget the name of the toy car, but I think it was battery-operated-- and it was the visual for that car, but the crazy singing of THIS one. I laughed my head off, wondering how that could happen.

  • Man I cant find a box of country cornflakes anywhere!!!! It was a joy to have them with warm milk when i was younger OMG!!!

  • @mizzmeekz Country Corn Flakes are available for sale on amazon.com, but it looks as if they're available only in packs of ten and in packs of seventy.

  • @supersporkspank I read that they're often sold at the convenience stores at some Exxon stations because Kellogg's won't allow their breakfast cereals to be sold there. Something about the rival companies both having a tiger mascot.

  • brilliant! :D

  • I just know that "American Gothic" is just a name of illustration, I thought this is one ancient band before Far East Family Band.

  • This was soooooooooooo ahead of its time.

  • at 0:39 they say "Country Corn Flakes, they're made with rice". Anyone else think thats a bit odd?

  • No its primarily corn but it also has rice to make it more crisp and resistant to moisture.

  • Odd, especially since neither the original recipe nor the current one have it. The clucking pig and the mooing chicken make me believe that Gen Mills wanted us to know that it was different. Sounds plausible that the rice was a desiccant until a cheaper/more convenient chemical came along.

  • haahahahahahah my mom was telling me about this commercial then she told me to look it up. && i must say, it's pretty annoying... but it has a certain... "ring" to it. hahahaha.

  • This was everybodys bust and joke song!

  • its goofy but I have to say its one of the most annoying commercials ever.

  • I could swear that I watched this just yesterday, but it was almost 50 years ago. The older you get the easier it is to accept how bizarre time is.

  • I'm curious what the creator of American Gothic thought of this.

  • Grant Wood died 18 years before this commercial. The painting was called American Gothic because the window on the farm house has a Gothic arch. (See Gothic cathedrals).

  • It's like a commercial from today.

  • Unabashedly and unapologetically off the wall goofy, and I LOVE it!!!!

  • General Mills still makes this cereal. All they need to do is update the visuals and keep the song! (I love the "Please buy our corn flakes!" touch.)

  • I loved that, too. I also like the line, "Made with rice!"

  • Some commercials you just never forget. This is one of them. Man, this song has been going through my head for more then 40 years. It's good to finally hear it again.

  • I love the way the female in this couple

turns her head toward the viewers when they

sound the line '...please buy our corn flakes'.

  • LOL!

  • ROFL, all the way trough the commercial. The women is staring at that bloke in a bad way (ecseped at 00:46-00:49 though)!

  • The animation looks like it was done by Fred Crippen, who did Roger Ramjet...

  • I can remember this commercial being played as late as 1965 so it was around for awhile.

  • :12... lol does that mean what i think it does :D

look up cornflakes or John harvey Kellogg and you'll see what i mean.

  • yeah... i know what you mean ^^ haha

  • It's a myth.

  • ZOMG THIS AMV IS KAWAII~ ^.^

  • this is so annoying!

  • A CLASSIC commercial! A hilarius take-off on an American icon and a clever catchy song. It blows away the crap that passes for commercials these days.

I remembering reading that Nan Wood (Grant Wood's sister, and the model for the woman in the original American Gothic) was still alive when this commercial came out. She sued General Mills for "demeaning" the painting. Don't know if she ever got anything out of it.

  • I think that she did win some settlement, like having the ad pulled. But that just added to the cereal's already cult status!

  • they made of corn=)

  • Everything tastes like your cat

  • what a sour puss. Why watch this if you're only gonna bitch about it?

  • Brainwashing is fun

  • Country Corn Flakes were introduced in 1964 with a Ray Bolger-style scarecrow; I wore their scarecrow costume for Halloween that year! The brand itself is still available (minus rice!), but it is sold primarily as a cheap alternative to Kellogg's; it is an eligible cereal for the WIC program for children.

  • This was orignally seen in 1965-'66, and was one of General Mills' "offbeat" ads designed to sell this product. It did- but try and find it on your supermarket shelf today!

  • Mmmmmmm! I loves me sum Kuntry Korn Flakes! Yessiree! - Seriously, dig that Jew's harp and the Grant Wood spoof is perfect.

  • That's FUNNY!! Sounds like Peter, Paul & Mary ... & the American Gothic take is a hoot!

  • Actually, I wonder if the voice is that of Judy Henske, the queen of the beatniks. I saw it forty years ago and laughed my a** off. I saw it again two days ago and had the same reaction! Brilliant ad!

  • What are they made of?

  • Rice.

  • I don't know either. But I remember seeing this and thinking the guy looked a lot like Jethro from Homer and Jethro. Couldn't have been him, though--they were hawking a competitor--Kellogg's Corn Flakes!

  • Sorry, I have no clue. If you can find out, you have great researching skills.

  • No fooling! There is no equivalent to imdb for ads. The two Gothics are spot on. And the voices are really authentic for that whole hootenanny thing of the mid-sixties. I mentioned to someone else that the woman's voice sounds very much like Judy Henske, a prominent folk/beatnik singer of the late fifties and sixties. She used to perform on the same stage as Bob Dylan. WHo know? The male voice could be that of Dylan's! (Or not...)

  • Voices were the Weavers. The couple were lip-synching.

  • REALLY? I wasn't aware. Thank you for the response!

  • any idea of who those actors might be?

  • any idea of who those actors might be?

  • one of the most bizzare things i've ever seen! it was funny!!!

  • Loved it then. Love it now!!

  • that was the best thing i have eer seen it was so funny

  • I remember this ad! Boyd do I feel old? Back in the days when some commercials used imagination. These days it's how much CGI you can get into the things.

  • seems about 30 years ahead of its time. Impressive

  • This was part of an ad campaign by the McMahon & Tate Agency, with most of the credit owed to Darrin Stevens in the creative department.

  • Lol! Good one, Winsron.

  • Oh my gosh! I remember that ad!

  • Very funny & clever - today's ad writers can take a tip from this.

  • Funny ad. Awful jingle.

  • Please try our corn flakes, they're made from CORN!!!

  • And rice, too. And the minimal amount of insect fragments permitted by law--that makes me antsy. like the 'sodium erthyorbate" in hot dogs--actually earthworms

  • ok sourpuss--why don't you go ahead and make a clever commercial about organic tofu that will be remembered 30 years later?
