Simply excluding something on grounds of taste, is, as I'm sure you're aware, ludicrous.

As for genius, well the proof is in the numbers, it seems. If Monk's music propagates the evolution of art, whilst typifying it's moment in time, then it meets the criteria of what we often call genius. But who can be the judge of that? It's simply a matter of time, I'd say.
