As far as I know Avala is the main transmitter site for the city of Belgrade (like Hortiatis is for Thessaloniki)!
I assume that underneath the transmitters you had low or no local reception thus this incredible DX as usual!

And yes indeed, Avala is the main transmitter of Belgrade and was one of the city landmarks, but was destroyed during the NATO bombings in April 1999 and is being completely rebuilt now (should be officially opened this October). In the last 10 years all stations from there have been transmitting from a temporary location, much lower than the initial Avala tower...
