Another question: does entering the purple or the orange gate make any difference? It seems to me that the purple gate stocks you up on stars and the orange one on fuel.

The more points you score during the level, the more fuel you get back. If your fuel is maxed out (I'm good enough to keep it maxed most of the time) it gives you stars to buy stuff instead. The better you do, the better you'll do.

The two gates are there because the game is two players. In two player mode, both players can't enter the same gate, so you need to find both keys. (The arcade version lets both players in the same door) The two doors do the same thing.
