have you ever played cybermorph yourself, or just watched avgns review? because if you play the game yourself you wont hear that voive that often. like neon360 said: It's so easy for so many people to talk shit about a game they haven't even played before, not alone a Jaguar at all in their entire life.
Battlemorph is a vast improvement over Cybermorph, Starfox was better than Cybermorph but not as good as Battlemorph. Open 3D game where you could underground and underwater. Cool game
All the comparisons of SF and Cyber/Battlemorph lack because it's a completely different genre; SF is nothing but a (great!) shooter; CM and BM are more like Starglider (Amiga/ST) where you have to collect items, but even here Starglider II is much more complex than CM/BM.
So, despite of the great graphics, CM/BM loses against Starf Fox when comparing them as shooter and it loses against Starglider when comparing them as an adventure game.
It's certainly a huge improvement over the original. Coming as it did after the launch of the Playstation it was a bit late in the day to save the Jaguar though. They really needed games of this quality the moment the Jag hit the sheleves.
This is a great game! And please anyone STOP comparing this game with Starfox... The fact that they are both space shooters doesn´t mean that you can compare them... In Battlemorph you can fly whereever you want. The underwater sequences would never be possible on the SNES, nor are the colors. And I also like Starfox but saying it looks better is a little ridicolous... it´s on rails... it´s like saying Resident Evil chronicals on the wii look better than RE 5 on XBOX 360... Very funny!
Most people who compare this to StarFox have never played this game or owned a Jaguar;let alone the CD. They just go by what they look at. They also fail to realize StarFox has no replay value because it's a short easy game that can be beaten in 20 minutes. This game will take several days to beat because it has so many levels and much more depth than StarFox ever will have.
Starfox is a fast paced game, and has a variety of secrets and different ways to play through, plenty of replay value. That said, from a tech standpoint, even Cybermorph is a lot more advanced (even compared to SF2), more polygons, shading, and higher framerate.
Going under water has nothing to do with it either... (SF2 featured this and free-range areas with OK draw distance and even some textures)
Too bad Cybermorph wasn't nearly as polished as BM. (granted music was CD but the rest...)
I once had a Jaguar. I really wanted it for the cool looks and it being different than the competition. No matter how much I tried to like it, the Jag really sucked. There just wasn't a good game on it. I kinda liked Iron Soldier. Apart from that everything sucked. There were reviewers claiming the Jaguar delivered stunning graphics with near photo realism. I guess those reviewers were bribed by Atari cause all I saw was horrible graphics and even worse gameplay. Wasted lots of money on it :-(
I have trouble seeing how this could compete with the Satun, especially the Play Station. I love my Nintendo 64, and the graphics for that are a lot better than the graphics for this. Hell, graphics for the Saturn are superior to this. I don't know how it can be that a system is more powerful and more graphically capable than the Saturn, and produce games this much worse. Check out "Shenue Sega Saturn" there's no way that Jaguar could compete with THAT!
The Atari Jaguar was out in 1993 and it's competitors were the Super NES/Super Famicom and Genesis/Mega Drive, the terrible CD-i, the Amiga CD32 and the 3DO. It sure was not able to compete with the PS or Saturn.
Yes, but the CEO of Atari said in an interview (Wikipedia) that the Jaguar was "More powerful than the Saturn and only a little less powerful than the Play Station". I don't see any way this could have come out a commercial success! And for the record, the Saturn also competed against the Super NES.
Well, the jaguar is pretty powerful if you only look at the hardware. But, if you only look at the hardware the Saturn would have been way superior to any system that generation. The problems with both Jaguar and Saturn was that they were almost impossible to program for, even today there is no game that is pushing the Jaguar. Jaguar was also pretty poorly designed.
Did the Jag. have a 3D processor? Even a powerful system without a 3D processor would fail any way if it competed against the Saturn and the Play Station. Oh, and for the Saturn, two processors and off the shelf components made it difficulty to program for, what was it for the Jaguar?
You have to admit that the movement is pretty good, though the debris doesn't really transition well from being a rock or object to being, well, debris.
They look quite a bit better than Starfox and really the Jag only came out a few years after the SNES and considering Starfox does have an extra processor in the cartridge (its not the SNES doing most of the processing in that game!) its not really that sad.
i know that 64-bits don't always have to do with graphics, but if they wanted to sell better, they shouldn't of boasted about the so called "64-BITS OF MEGA POWER!"
This is most definitely in my top 5 of favorite Jaguar games. The music is amazing and the game is very solid all-around.
You should really post a video of level 3 if you ever get the chance. I think the game starts to get deep around that and the end boss is insane. Very dark, atmosphere... pulls you in.
It's so easy for so many people to talk shit about a game they haven't even played before, not alone a Jaguar at all in their entire life.
Some appreciation and some hating. Look you can't really knock the Jaguar. I mean it came out in 93'. The Jaguar had two 32bit processors, making it a 64bit system. Play other games besides this one, which all and all still looks better then any 3D PSX game as far as frame rate and textures, you'd see that many of the Jaguar games looked good for it's time. Alien vs. Predator comes to mind, Zool 2, Rayman, Wolfenstein, and Doom are other good titles on the Jaguar.
Yes, the Jag has two 32-bit processors, but that's not what makes it 64-bit. It's called a 64-bit system because it has a 64-bit data bus. It's that simple.
In a last ditch effort to rescue the Jaguar, Atari tried to play down these two consoles by proclaiming the Jaguar was the only "64-bit" system. Technically-minded gamers debated the merits of Atari's claim: some felt the Jaguar's principal "64-bit co-processors" were simply graphics accelerators, requiring external control from the Jaguar's primary processors; the primary GPU executed a 32-bit instruction-set, while the remaining CPU (68000) was already established to be a 32-bit unit.
Look, you're the one who said "The Jaguar had two 32bit processors, making it a 64bit system". That's wrong, and the stuff you just pasted even proves you wrong.
Alright guy, I'll let you live in your fantasy world and believe what you want, can't argue facts though. You can have the last word cause I'm done, peace.
Why, if theres two p4 quad core computers but one is performing better? RAM. Now RAM ain't the only issue the jaguar had(should/could have had more 4 instead 2) it also had a 68k processor that should have only been used to boot up the system or not have even been in the system at all. Not to mention that at the time the tools necessary to program the Jaguar properly just simply didn't exist.
For an example, look at one of the Jaguar's last games Skyhammer, a pretty game that could rival some games on the nextgen systems of the time(PSX, Saturn or N64)in the visual department and that game still doesn't show the complete potential of the Jag. Like the PS3 you can have all the power in the world it's useless if you can't program for it.
The controls don't look amazing (floating crosshairs might've been nice, and the physics look shaky), but the detail in the world is fairly impressive. I had to laugh when you blew up the bridge and it collapsed segment by segment - I'd figured after the first unsuccessful missile that it was as permanent as the ground.
the jaguar didn't have the processing power to do fancy graphics, infact it didn't have a dedicated processor, if it did the frame rates would be faster, better polygons, maybe even some texture...
the jaguar seemed to be unifinished, rushed out, but thats ATARI for you. POWER(LESS) WITHOUT THE PRICE!
The chipset was rushed for sure. I think Atari would have been better off releasing the Panther 2 or 3 years earlier, which was a machine with the hardware to beat all the 2D based game systems of that time and used more time and funds to work on the Jag chipset so there would be no bugs, more cash and faster clockspeeds it could have beaten the Next gen systems hands down. Like the Jag2 chipset thats said to be much faster then the PSX.
Not having dedicated processors is not nessaserly a bad thing. Totally hardwired chips take away a lot of programming freedom of the programmer eventhough it makes certain things much easier. The downside to me of having dedicated hardware is that things start to look the same. The fun of people creating their own routines to do things and others creating faster routines to do it is gone. It makes coders less creative. I guess thats why i like the old home computers more then any console or PC.
Well, its early 3D gaming so its using simple polygons with a few textures here and there, the biggest thing I can say about this game was the fact that it was so fun to play. Going underwater was a cool effect and the music was good.
Polygons are per definition geomitric shapes. The Jag wasn't a poly cruncher (Wasn't bad at it for it's time though ) as the later machines that can crunch loads of polygons, so you can make rounder shapes with more detail.
Not all CPU architectures are suitable for everything. The jag's chips were good all purpose processors. The Jag unfortunately had some hardware bugs. On top of that, Atari decided not to use cash memory or not enough for the Tom CPU. John Carmack or Garmack (sorry if i got it wrong) said that if it would have enough cash and Atari would have taken the time to solve the hardware bugs, The Jag could have been a heavy oponent of the playstation which has 3D dedicated hardware.
Wikipedia: A CPU that is 64-bit internally might have external data buses or address buses with a different size, either larger or smaller; the term "64-bit" is often used to describe the size of these buses as well. For instance, many current machines with 32-bit processors use 64-bit buses (e.g. the original Pentium and later CPUs), and may occasionally be referred to as "64-bit" for this reason.
The Jag was not completely 64 Bits, but there are not many 64 bit processors who are and still are reffered to as 64 bit. There's still no official definiton for bits on these "hybrid" chips.
I use to have this game and had a blast playing it. The underwater levels set this game apart not only from the original Cybermorph but from just about any game out at the time. One of the best Jag CD games ever and a true classic. All those Nintendo and Sega fans did miss out on some great games.
This game rocks. I need to break out the Jag CD and play it again. With all the varied worlds, missions and underwater areas it's hard for this game to get old.
This is the game that should have came with the cd unit... Not that blue lighting crap. I still think this is one of the best games for the jaguar period
Looks like they made some solid improvements to Cybermorph. I have a Jag but no J-CD. Games like this & Highlander look solid on it. Iron Solider sequel is a must. The cart version of that is so rare. Nice video man.
