This car is a good idea in Europe but absolutely retarded in the states. I don't care how "safe" the Smart is, Newton's second and third laws tell us how dangerous a collision at freeway speeds can be. If everyone was driving Smarts and other microcars, or even just subcompacts, it could be actually smart to own one, but as long as we keep driving Escalades and Tahoes, it's a deathwish to own one.

well in england most of them run on regular unleaded but smart did do a diesel engined version but i dont think they sold many of them? maybe because of reduced performance??

these car's are fantastic!! i've owned 2 and i cant praise them enough!! they do have there little quirks though? like the ride can be a little bumpy and the boot space is only small and the smart semi/fully automatic transmission takes a good couple of day's to get used to but the mpg they get is unreal!! and there like a little go kart to drive!! a whole lot of fun!!

I've got one and it is amazing! It costs £18 to travel 300+ miles. My dad's car costs £80-90 to do the same journey.

And I happily overtake people so speed isn't an issue either.

You know, I wish I knew the answer to your question. A car like that should get 50 or 60mpg but only gets around 35-40. Better to buy a normal car like a civic or corolla and not have to deal with the terrible interior space that these things have. Oh yeah, they take premium fuel too... I just wonder what they were thinking when they designed the thing.

the 4 door one is better, bigger, roomier and with the 1.5 diesel it does over 70 MPG and it's still fibre glass so it won't dent. My car does 74 MPG

no actually its only 33 mpg in city and 40 on hwy. online they are about 18,000 to 20,000. or you can pay 100 dollars to wait two years and buy one for under 14,000. ;]

I own a DUMBcar myself. It's a 1972 Cadillac Coupe DeVille with a big V8 that guzzles a lot of gas. If I actually ran over a child, I'd never know it because the car is so big and heavy.

Nah. It's usually the car I use when I go out to the local drinking hole. It's a lot of fun on a rainy night, especially after a night of hard drinking.  I haven't replaced the tires in, like 7 years, so they're worn down to the steel belt.

I pick up mine this Saturday. Some of the posts here are WAY off, some close or right on. I got one loaded at 13.5K. Word on the street is that the govt. fuel estimates are actually pretty low, and the safety ratings are impressive. I like technology, and I dig what's in this car. 1.- this car have more safety than a lot of big trucks and other cars.

2.- this is not a sport car as the mini cooper so you cant compare.

3.- when you are in traffic, how many cars with more than 1 person you see? very few...

4.- smart is the best 2nd car, it is perfect to go to work.

So it has the NCAP rating the same as Merc Eclass, but the occupant safety is lower due to hard impact/stop rate (small crumple zones against the hard body shell called tridion) and low absorbtion rate. I have the new model and its really fun to drive and feels more agile and it is much spacious and higher than this model. and LOL, a mercedes badge on the front?? looks aukward haha

It's built by smart, a division of Mercedes and swatch. :) We have had smart in Canada since about 2004 (in Europe since 1998). I love coming to the states, everyone looks at you like WTF lol... but yeah it is a total blast to drive, handles like a shifter cart!! And the fuel consumption of the cdi (diesel) is around 3.4 L/100 km (that's 70 mpg for you Americans haha)

Its gonna be awesome next year when you guys get smart in the USA!
