i have a a25c mcilroy.its the best guitar ive ever had .ive got a lowden lse2, avalon l12c .the d18 martin has been retired since i got the irish ones.i find the fingerboard is slightly wider and prevent the 6th string slipping over.the tone of the ceder/walnut combo.wont let me put it down.martin sps are a good cheap string .3 sets for £15.they last ok .but ever4yone has a prefrance.good to see other guitarist lucky enough to own one ...
Excellent playing. I also have one of these excellent Mcilroy guitars (Model No 423) and it's here to stay. Just curious. Do you you still use the D'Addario EJ16 strings which Dermot fits on these guitars or have you experimented with other brands. Currently I am using Elixir Nanoweb Light on mine
@humph50 Thanks, they're incredible guitars. The Nanowebs are definitely an improvement over the Polywebs which were a little one-dimensional. Beyond the convenience factor, for the price of one pack, I can get 4 packs of Martin's regular 80/20 bronze which give a nice mellow tone or D'Addario 85/15 American bronze for a little more ping. Both gave a more realistic open tone vs the compressed tone of Elixirs, especially in open tunings where they chime better and I prefer the feel.
Dermot makes faultless guitars, in my opinion. I reviewed a couple for Acoustic magazine, and there's only been one guitar on my wish list since then.
@Sammyboy72 agreed, it's a gem of a guitar, incredibly light and responsive, inspires you to play more and better. there's something about his walnut/cedar combo that works exceptionally well.
i am highly considering saving up to get this exact same model.
i have a takamine, cheap rosewood spruce combo.. its an ok guitar.. i actually lvoe it. nbnut i want a guitar that will grow in sound as i grow in ability.
these seem amazing, and sound just as good as the lowdens that he built.
it also looks little like richard thompsons guitar without the cutaway
it's definitely the type of guitar that will make you a better player and explore your potential, I know that petercooks just got in a new A25 at the best price I've seen anywhere if you're in the market. McIlroy A is same body size as the Lowden F, like the RT signature F35C, Mc's are slightly lighter and airier sounding overall.
Comhgairdeas leat! Congrats on your new acquisition. It's the model acoustic guitar rated "best guitar ever"!. You can wean yourself up on 11s as it's a very responsive guitar until your fingers are ready for 12s which really set the top off and respond well to strumming without getting boomy. Have just been doing doing some recording with it again and it's a real wolf in sheep's clothing. look forward to some videos.
thanks for the comments, it's a beautiful guitar, very hard to put down and incredibly playable with what I can only describe as a "champagne tone". Makes you really explore the guitar's potential and your own, you forget there's a guitar in your hands and just make music which is how a guitar should be.
I called into Dermot's workshop last week as I was nearby. His guitars have that "just can't put it down" quality. I liked this guitar and found it very balanced and resonant. I hope to go back to try out some of the bigger rosewood/ spruce models. Helpful guy too.
it's a combination that takes a while to acclimatise to if you've come from a rose/spruce background as most of us do, I was hoping to try out the rw/spruce too but they fly out so quick he never has any in! walnut cedar gives great clarity and separation without some of the warmth/muddiness of rosewood and as you say, the A shape welds itself firmly into your ribcage ne'er to be plied away ;) let me know how you find the rw/s and the jumbos.
one of my Tayors is a walnut with a cedar top. never heard of the Mcllroy. from your country? looks great. no markers on the neck like on my yairi.
flashy over the neck stuff. i do that when i use a 1/2 capo at the 5th fret in a weird tuning where the top strings are tuned way down to a Bb and i play bass on those strings and play the melody on the low remaining strings. i should post that one soon. 5 stars!

I've since bought a A25C, really lovely, but after playing electrics the strings take some getting used to!
