The WORST thing is I KNOW people who are like this. Out of one of the studios I used to dance for, they practically CREATE them. It's a sad thing. These girls take a couple classes, or learn from DVDs and see that some of the Tribal Costumes are kind of a grouping of more unusual things, as opposed to a Cabaret costume which one would usually buy, and then they get attention, that attention leads to this. And the Professional Belly Dance community DOES suffer due to them undercharging.
If you want just dance at home or for friends these tips is fine, however to be a professional belly dancer you must have a proper teacher and a good training. Posture is something that videos can't correct you. Don't agree with cheap learning, that's result cheap dance.
Regarding fusing- You have to know both styles before you can fuse them together. Sore spot or no, you still need to know the rules before you can break them. Otherwise..... I can label what my three year old grandchildren's play dancing as "fusion bellydance"...... come on people.
Ahh it's funny 'cause it's true. I've met people who, when I talk about going to workshops and performances by professional belly dancers whom I adore, say, "well it really can't be that hard..." or "I've heard there's not much to it"... And not to mention people who say "oh, you learn belly dancing? Yeah, I've done that. I've learnt belly dancing" as if a term of classes at a gym is all you need. Ergh.
This is a great video... funny yet at the same time sadly true. As a bellydancer and new instructor I do find the hardest thing is people's misconception of how easy our art is as well as those new dancers who take just a few classes and then either decide to leave instruction for self instruction (nothing wrong with learning via video but take classes from time to time for hands on correction and insight) & then decide (TBC x4)
That they are ready to teach and promote as “professional” bellydancers, not only does this hurt them as often they are not ready, but it hurts the industry as the standard of dance falls and its our responsibility as artists and dancers to hold the bar high and keep it there. As well the undercutting…. Oh my this is so detrimental to our art from and how its perceived.
As well the undercutting…. Oh my this is so detrimental to our art from and how its perceived. Also as a dancer who is trained in Cabaret and Tribal, hearing dancers say “Oh I am Fusion so that I can be free” irritates me…Fusion is yes a place of freedom BUT it does hold rules… “Know and respect the dances forms that you are fusing together
@ThaFaesRealm Donna Mejia offers some awesome lectures and info on what "fusion" means and we as dancers owe to the styles we are putting together and their history. Although I have been guilty of doing songs for fun, they are presented to the audience as American Fantasy. This is a sore spot for all of us. I have met dancers who teach because there are no other resources.
I think this little vid has stirred the pot as it says many things that new dancers know but don’t want to hear and what experienced dancers have been saying around the meeting tables for awhile. Well done.
**NOTE** This comment is not against student dancers who are learning, developing and working on their craft... this comment is to those who believe that you can learn all for free, never step into a class to be developed hands on an undercut
This video is too funny! HipMix.net just posted a blog about this very same thing... the "Holiday Break Belly Dancer" who shakes around the stage without much technique and calls it belly dance. No hate to students who use performance as a tool to learn - but it is disrespectful to belly dance professionals to misrepresent the art. Best of luck to all that dance but please make sure you are paying respect to the cultures you are portraying through performance. Thanks for sharing!
@Falcon1082a I agree with what you are saying but I also get what @The82ag2e is saying. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there that take 1 or 2 classes, or watch a couple of videos and suddenly think they know enough to teach but refuse to further there education by going to workshops and the like. I agree students should be supported- I have been there for sure- but I do wish that girls that want to teach and preform professionally would take their dance education more seriously :(
@Angeloriona I would say we are in agreement. That is what the cartoon is satirizing. However, the women in the other videos on this channel take weekly classes (sometimes more then one a week), attend workshops and even events like TribalCon. (Google it. It is an awesome event.) I can say this because I know them personally. Taking shots at them is what I took offense to.
This is so hilarious & sadly true. If you happen to like this 'style' of bellydance - please make it to MECDA's cairo caravan. They are as good at managing the event as they are professional dancers. sign ups start monday (aug 1, 2011) for june 2012. why so early? not sure. probably because they had such a hard time getting scheduling done this yr.
hahahaha Just looked this up on here as folk posting it on Fb. It is certainly true of most places. But what makes me laugh is all the other videos surrounding it!
@The82ag2e Now that's not nice. A lot of the videos here are of student shows and as a dancer, you should be supportive of them, not insulting. The cartoon video makes fun of people that are not putting in the effort. Big difference.
Ha ha ha. lol. Reminds me of how it is today. Everybody thinks they can be bellydancers and starts teaching too urly. This is a funny example on how many unsurios dancers it is today, ,,, hi hi.
