This isn't even a scene. It's 10 minutes of 2 characters watching another classic movie. He couldn't possibly ever have intended to use this. Then again, Landis has had many moments of idiocy, as well as many moments of brilliance.
Other commenters have already said it better....but yeah, this scene is boring and pointless, and needed to be cut. Most unforgivably, it spoils the Clarence Beeks mystique. Don't fuck with the Beekstique.
wow.. way to be secretive about slipping that guy knock-out medicine.. may as well have been dropping marbles into that cup.. *clink...clink-clink-clink*
A truly, one of the best movies, and they don't make it anymore. And hey, no computer or special effects whatsoever. All you need is a good and interesting story. is anyone agreeing with me?
this may be a redundant question but i'm curious, who the heck was that wanna be prison guard? why would he have such confidential material in his possession?
@Broockle Yes, did you even see the whole movie? If so, you would know what this is about...The security guard was working at the USDA, which publishes a monthly report on certain types pf crops...and the Dukes paid the bad guy in this scene to sneak in and get the report...it would be 'insider info' so that the Duke brothers could cheat and trade the commodity markets when the news came out.
When NBC premiered the film, they used this scene it to fill space. A lot of films that are edited for television do it. The early TV versions of Caddyshack and Fast Times were loaded full of scenes like that.
My dad recorded this film from television in the 80's and this scene was included. I was perplexed why they took it off the dvd version. But it makes sense when you think about it.
The scene is definitely surplus to requirements. A case of great editing. ...Hmmm, methinks a few of the over-CGI'd films of today could do with a bit of good editing like this '80s movie! ,-)
I listened to Robert Kiyosaki's advice on silver: "I believe this is the biggest investment anyone can make in the next 100yrs" I did my research and found an opportunity that has changed my life in 12 months. Take a look like i did.... Visit: goldsave.co/
I adore this movie - definitely one of the best films of the 80's. Dan Aykroyd was soooo great and cute - very impressive!!! Eddie Murphy and Jamie Lee Curtis were brilliant as well.
Trading Places is great choice for Christmas time - so entertaining!
Part of me thinks that Landis may have only filmed this scene in order to appease a studio exec's demand for it:
Exec: "I think we need to see him get the briefcase."
Landis "I disagree. But if it'll please you guys, i'll do it".
It's so badly done (especially in comparison to the rest of the film), I wouldn't be surprised he filmed it like this in order to make sure it wouldn't get into the final cut!
I watched this film upon it's original release in theaters and this scene was NOT deleted, it was actually included in the film. It may have been deleted in later years to improve the continuity of the film, as they say, addition by subtraction
I seen this at the Quo Vadis Theatre in Westland Michigan in its first week of release. It was NOT in the film. There are instances where the studio will release different prints to different markets. Itw as not in the print that went to the Detroit market.
@drlove1972 Are you sure? I saw it in theaters that summer and have no recollection seeing this scene. I thought this was added for television, to counter the cut scenes and pad the airtime.
Man, what a drag that scene was. Thank god they pulled it. Not only was it boring, but it punched holes in the plot of the film. It also bugged me the way Jerry was served like an inch of coffee. Anyhow, that's why there's editing I suppose.
Wait, did Jerry die? If not, couldn't he have testified that Beaks stole the case. And there weren't any video cameras to catch Beaks steal the case?
Perhaps he was concentrating too much on Sunset Blvd. What seems strange to me is that Landis wanted to include such a long extract from Sunset Blvd., including the last scene, though it seems pretty irrelevant to the story. Was he a huge Wilder fan?

A great movie does NOT need a needless, weak, poorly executed scene to slow down the pacing!

Landis lacks the vision for the complex social and fiscal class issues this film brushes upon.

Yep, totally un-necessary scene. I always just assumed that Beeks was a trusted official, and that he abused his trust.
