3-Protestants say that they believe in the Communion of Saints, but sedulously exclude all union with them. Catholics at least are conscious of belonging to the great family of God's children, and do not insist on being strangers to all with whom they will be associated in heaven.
2-He identifies Himself with them. When Saul persecuted the Christians, Jesus said to him, "Why persecutest thou Me?" And if the sufferings of the saints are His sufferings; the intercession of the saints is another form of His intercession. We Catholics believe in the Communion of saints; the common union of all saints in Christ.
1-If a mother prays for a wayward son, she is mediating on behalf of that son. And if God hears her prayers, that does not detract from the mediation of Christ. And as she can pray for her son, the Lady Mother of Christ and the saints can pray for us. And when they do, it is Jesus mediating for us, for it is Jesus in them Who is doing so. You lack understanding of Christian doctrine. Christians, whether in heaven or on earth, are the members of Christ.
One of my favorite litanies! Many non catholic/orthodox don't understand that we are truely in communion with all saints known and unknown. living, dead and unborn. In the eastern churches part of the host is set aside for the saints
Beware of this counterfeit that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught the Christians to commit adultery and fornicate with idols. BEWARE OF THIS MOTHER OF ALL HARLOTS. This will suffer heavy losses.
We're not praying to them, we're asking them to pray for us, almost like if you were to ask a friend. I'm glad that St. Matthias the Apostle is in the Litany.
As Catholics we believe that all people are called to sainthood!! Which we all should try and acheive, but do to the different pleasures of the world it is extremly hard to accomplish sainthood. I am going into the seminary next year and I pray to the saints to help pray to God for guidance and understanding of my faith may God Bless You ALL!!.
Why are we Catholics kicked around for asking saints to pray for us? How many times has someone still alive asked us to pray for them. I know i have been on many occasions and many were non catholics who asked. Why then do people find it outrageous for us to ask saints who have passed on to pray for us. The relationship with those who have died and those of us still alive is a beautiful one.
Non catholics dont understand that the saints are our friends and that the line between life and death is transcended by Christ. I explained to my kids that the saints are our friends and heroes. Also, most noncatholics exclude the maccabeean books which talk about praying for the dead. Non catholic/orthodox are still in their infancy and still "protesting"
@ChrisDaron Is it Christ like to call someone dumb? We dont want to insult are protestant brothers and sisters we want to set an example of kindness .conversion can be achieved through kindness and the love of God .(Just an exhortation )
Lemarizvb: Wrong sir. Check your information. There was, maybe it still exists, an office in Brussels, Belgium, something called "Bolandists" directed by the Jesuits, dealing with the problem of not too godly saints.
As I said.....people don't declare others saints - God does! The Church is merely recognising God's decision through canonisation. We aren't disagreeing with each other!
Indeed The Church doesn't make people saints - It recognises that those people showed the qualities one would expect in a saint, and that there have been miracles attained as a sign of God's recognition thereof.
so why do the catholics (i'm interested in the church) pray to the saints? the way i was raised, it was just merely praying to people. but the saints were different...right??
Hello! It's not so much praying to the Saints as asking for THEIR prayers. They are intercessors for us. We believe that they are close to God and therefore their extra prayers may help. Their example also brings solace.
not sure if someone cleared it up for you yet but i'll try - catholics believe that people who have died are still in communion with those of us that are alive through the unifying body of Christ. catholics therefore ask saints to pray for them to God in an act of intercession.
Cont.- a year, and of course the kids are either in Parochial school, my own daughter, or in "catechism". But certianly I would also love to see the re-evangelization of Los Angeles
I live in a suburb 20 minutes east of the CBD (downtown)Los Angeles. Now more heavily populated by Asians. The Filipinos of course are majority Catholics, but we have a large number of Vietnamese Catholics as well. Thank God, because the younger caucasian Catholics tend to move out to newer "Ex-urbs". Us hispanics break out like the rest of the population in that the older set 45+ remain fairly commited, the younger set are "too busy" trying to earn a living and drop in to church 3-4 times a yr
A 2000 yr tradition, rich in Ritual and ceremony: the vestments, Incense, ancient rites and Holy Orders.... I consider myself a liberal Catholic, (according to Frmr Sen. R Santorum that makes me an Episcopalian!!), but I will always revere the Sacred Liturgy!!
Easter Vigil...I was regaling my daughter with tales of how the whole parish would turn out for our "High Holy Days"... thursday thru sunday were huge, SRO...ALAS!
Wiki: "Pantasaph is a small village in Flintshire, north-east Wales, two miles South of Holywell. It is notable for its large Franciscan Retreat Centre on the main street..."
My parish just started to celebrate a "Latin Mass"... that should indulge my "jones" for incense 'til we make it out there... I'm employed in the real estate biz, in theory anyhow, so soon as we get right again...(beads rattling!!)
UK! WOW, what percent do Catholics make up in Wales?? I figure catholics must comprise a greater share of the "church going" christians in the UK. Isn't much of W Europe "unchurched"? I recall our Pastor commenting that W Europe was in dire need of "re-evangelization"!
I'm aware that T Blair recently converted, with his wife being a devout Catholic, what kinda hulla-ba loo, if any did the UK press make about that??
Wales has fewer Catholics than England by percentage, I think. There are enclaves though - the NW has several strong areas, such as Liverpool and Wigan. There are, for example, more Catholic Schools than state schools in Liverpool!
Yes to your comments on Europe - our Cardinal was talking about it this week. That was the reason that the Pope chose his name too!
It's good living in a more Catholic area....What's it like where you are?
Thank you, Gatta9!

Hello! It's St. Columba - the great missionary saint.

The church has been wrong before. Several names have been discreetly eliminated from the list of saints. I repeat only god knows the heart.

I agree....but I am not sure what point you are trying to make.....

Great Answer! A lot of people also forget that EVERYONE is called to sainthood.
FYI...
Saint:
Sanctus (Latin) = Holy (English) = Hallow (Archaic English) = Halloween -Eve of Holiness which is the day before All Saints day on 11/1.
Have a Pius Halloween!
