somehow no1 was killed the wheelsman ordered others in the wheelhouse to evacuate down the internal stairs and he insisted to stay behind to prevent the vessel continuing its journey, he survived too.
I'm a bridge tender myself. In most cases, things like this are the boater's fault. They need to give themselves enough time to be able to stop should they see the bridge closing too soon. However, it appears the tender closed it as the boat was just about to go under. If, as another commenter has said, that the bridge tender wasn't "well enough" to work, then they shouldn't have been at work. It's the supervisor's fault for not finding a replacement if they were too ill to see a boat coming.
The guy in the crumpled pilothouse survived, as did all the crew of 22. Ship is called 'Windoc', and it was carrying grain from Thunder Bay, Ontario, for delivery to Montreal. Full details of the incident are available on the web for anybody who wants to know more.
Because of the uninformed comments here, let me explain the real story. The bridge operator was in no condition to work that day, but was forced overtime (work or you're fired). He was sick and on medications that caused him to not be in a normal state. And the crew won't jump if it's not absolutely nescessesary. there is lots of places to meet (such as the bow (or "front") on a 700 foot ship. Inform yourselves before you make assumptions.
when somebody asks a simple question you should answer with a simple answer. obviously i havent seen the movie! So? so what? he could say "this video is from "this" movie". Thats makes us mans not animals! but NOOOOO!!!! he is an Animal (with capital A)!!!! he thinks that he can do what ever he want!!!! Gooooood Soooooo mf Stupid
it was deemed accident, happened in Allanburg, Ont, 5 minutes outside of Niagara Falls Ontario. Windoc sets sail in 6 months, cost over 10 million dollars to repair, bridge now automatic. operator not drunk, had 2 glasses of wine and took heart meds, passed out but it should have been his day off. how do i know??? I live in Allanburg :) search WINDOC in google, check the site!
hey gozer..the Windoc was in Port Colborne until about a week ago and it didn't look like it was anywhere near ready to sail again..and she's been here for about 3 years before it left..i was going to get some video of her before it left but I dont have a cam
yes it was in PC but last month on the front of the st. catharines standard they showed a pic of a tugboat towing it to the drydock to complete repairs. i personally don't believe they can do it but the standard quoted the dry docks as saying it would be ready to sail in 6 months. how they expect to do it, i don't know!!! good luck to them!! I can't even completely clean my house in 6 months! lol
oh no!! leg it..... is the guy who looks like grizzley adams the captain? obviously more used to chopping logs and feeding bears than steering boats! nah seriously hope hes alrite..or is he sharing a cup of tea with davy jones now?
OMG! lmao! A part of me can't believe someone actually has video footage of this and put it on youtube and the other part of can't believe I'm surprised! And yes it's real, just ask everyone who had to use a pain in the ass detour for a year while the bridge was being rebuilt!
THe captain (Armstrong) and mate took off down the stairs when they saw the bridge lowering. The wheelsman (who was steering)lay on the deck and barely escaped with his life.
NO MORE abot drunnken crew as the was not the case. Lakeboats are DRY and if you try to drink before duty you won't be working long
The bridge guy probably drank too much, reached for his bud on the desk, slipped off his chair, hit the 'close bridge' button with his head and passed out.
This reminds me vividly of Porky the movie. The bad part is that the Welland Canal incident wasn't a movie set with special effects, allowing for a fictional situation. I'll bet this boat crew wished it was fake.
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS. you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 different videos in the next hour. if you do, tommorow will be the best day of your life.

it ain't fake!!like a lot of other guys on here that I was there too.I was at the races at the track 10 minutes away from the bridge and the announcer said a boat had hit the bridge and the highway was closed..I was able to get to the scene from Holland Road and got right up to the boat.the fire was already out when I got there .also, the boat is now about a mile away from me here...the owners are still deciding what to do with it..scrap it or make it into a barge..
uh what a vacation that was. my family took a vacation to the wellend canal. i would recomend this because it is really nice there. and we saw the whole thing.
According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, it was a couple of Darvon and half a bottle of wine:
"Earlier that morning, the bridge operator took two Darvon-N pain relief tablets to relieve back pain, and consumed about two to four glasses of wine around lunch time."
no..no..no.. you are all wrong.. kinetic energy, gravity, momentum and Newtons law of motion combined to cause this accident
