I'm a bridge tender myself. In most cases, things like this are the boater's fault. They need to give themselves enough time to be able to stop should they see the bridge closing too soon. However, it appears the tender closed it as the boat was just about to go under. If, as another commenter has said, that the bridge tender wasn't "well enough" to work, then they shouldn't have been at work. It's the supervisor's fault for not finding a replacement if they were too ill to see a boat coming.

Because of the uninformed comments here, let me explain the real story. The bridge operator was in no condition to work that day, but was forced overtime (work or you're fired). He was sick and on medications that caused him to not be in a normal state. And the crew won't jump if it's not absolutely nescessesary. there is lots of places to meet (such as the bow (or "front") on a 700 foot ship. Inform yourselves before you make assumptions.

yes it was in PC but last month on the front of the st. catharines standard they showed a pic of a tugboat towing it to the drydock to complete repairs. i personally don't believe they can do it but the standard quoted the dry docks as saying it would be ready to sail in 6 months. how they expect to do it, i don't know!!! good luck to them!! I can't even completely clean my house in 6 months! lol

THe captain (Armstrong) and mate took off down the stairs when they saw the bridge lowering. The wheelsman (who was steering)lay on the deck and barely escaped with his life.

it ain't fake!!like a lot of other guys on here that I was there too.I was at the races at the track 10 minutes away from the bridge and the announcer said a boat had hit the bridge and the highway was closed..I was able to get to the scene from Holland Road and got right up to the boat.the fire was already out when I got there .also,the boat is now about a mile away from me here...the owners are still deciding what to do with it..scrap it or make it into a barge..
