Yeah, I heard the story on this. There was a 70s sitcom called ghostbusters, and they tried to sue Harold Ramins and Dan Akroyd for their movie. But they settled out of court, and one of the terms is that they'd be allowed to create this stupid cartoon.

@86EazyC Technically there was a live action series in the 70's called The Ghost Busters which this cartoon was a sequel of, and it is this franchise, not the Columbia Pictures movies and the sequel cartoon series that is the original version. Filmation sued Columbia for using the Ghostbusters name without permission, and one of the results was that Columbia had to change the name of their impending cartoon series cause they couldn't call it "Ghostbusters" as originally planned.

To be fair, it wasn't. The 1984 film was an original idea from Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis that ran across some some copyright issues due to an obscure and failed 70's sitcom that no one remembered. It was all about the title. This shortlived 80's cartoon was an attempt from Filmation to protect the IP.

This was, quite frankly, garbage. Stick to the REAL deal.

How many episodes of this cartoon? But the bad news is when ABS CBN 2 aired the real ghostbusters on television back in the 90's here in the Philippines. RPN 9 now Solor tv aired this cartoon of Let's go Ghostbuster. They say this is the spin off of the real Ghostbusters. For those in the Philippines Let's go Ghostbusters cartoon is not the spin off of the real Ghostbusters I think for me Dan change the story compeer to this and the live action of Let's go Ghostbusters

Filmation's were from the 70's and the cartoon was from 1986, which is why the Bill Murray cartoon is called The Real Ghostbusters.

For those who don't know. When Columbia/Tristar released the movie Ghostbusters, there was a civil lawsuit with Filmation because a TV show called The Ghostbusters (Aired in 1975). When DiC released there Ghostbusters cartoon, Filmation protested. That's why it was changed to The Real Ghostbusters (Probably to thumb their nose at Filmation).

back in the 80's i liked both the Real Ghostbusters, and this show... but if i had to pick just one Ghostbusters cartoon series, i would have to go with the Real Ghostbusters... RGB's episodes were more dramatic and darker in tone than filmations GBs... some of RGB's episodes were so dark, that they actually felt more like HBO's Tales From the Crypt, than a cartoon show... also RGB had legendary writer J Michael Straczynski, on the staff. so in my opinion RGB was better in so many ways....

There was a live action tv show in the 70s or 80s with the name Ghostbusters.

It featured two guys and a guy in a gorilla suit.

When the un-related Ghostbusters movie was in the works, Filmation decided to capitalize on it by creating a cartoon based on that crappy old live action show.

So the Filmation cartoon uses the old old live action show as source material/ continuity, while the Real Ghostbusters cartoon uses the movie.
