The point here is to cut down on the number of chip bags going into landfills. If you have a compost pile, or are signed up for curbside compost pickup, then your sunchips bags will someday be soil. This does NOT mean you can just throw the bag on the ground. That's not how compost works.

This is a bullshit marketing ploy meant to take advantage of peoples guilt about the environment. If Frito-Lay's really thinks this type of package really helps the environment in some way, then why don't they package all their other products in it? Because its an annoying gimmick that doesn't benefit anything. Fact of the matter is, unless your bag of chips is made of hazardous materials, when you responsibly dispose of your garbage it will sit safely in a land fill and never hurt anything.

@waico27 No, I think you need to do some objective research of your own. Most other chip bags are made from petroleum, not trees, so I don't know what this has to do with deforestation. This bag I believe is made from a hydrocarbon derived from a food crop. Not good. Also, we are not going to run out of landfill space. 400 total square miles will be all the space needed for americas waste for 100 years. Thats nothing.

@waico27 Landfills also produce green energy from the methane produced in them. Treated paper would be a more ecologically responsible and biodegradable material for a bag of chips. Trees are grown as crops to make paper just like we grow potatos to make french fries. We don't cut down forests that will never grow again to make paper.

Its just something that's easily exploited politicians and corporations to benefit themselves by way of the electorate's and consumers' concerns. Whatever your views on them are, issues concerning the environment can be very alarming and scary to think about, so one has to be very critical about the information one receives about the environment and things that people ask you to spend your money on to benefit it.

@David12King The decomposition process does not happen in landfills. They are completely sealed up so that no air, water or sunlight get to the garbage which are all the elements necessary for decomposition. So if these bags are placed in a landfill they will be no better than any other bag...

I can assure you it is, the factory I work for has been working with Frito-Lay on this for a while now. We make the plastic film for the actual bag part, they needed to develop the printing and "metalizing" part of the combination.
