Was a similar EBS warning played on any other radio stations? I can't imagine that WOWO was the only station that got the false alert. If so, do recordings exist of the other stations?
And the classical music played during the alert is creepy as hell. The music of the apocalypse. The Partridge Family ad sounds so petty and meaningless contrasted to the seriousness of the EBS alert.
Hi Folks - Bob Seivers here. We've been authorized to scare the crap out of you as we've received official notification that there's a national emergency in progress.
THIS was SO cool! I was only a baby then but holy ****! That guy had one commanding voice too -- great radio/TV voice. Also a day before a destructive tornado outbreak in the Mississippi "Delta." I am a TV meteorologist and I remember the master control guys showing me what they had to do if this happened back in 1995. Never knew one of these went out by accident..
I'm trying to find someone who remembers any of this at all. I was 7 and would normally have been up watching Saturday morning cartoons at 9:30 am. It's possible that I didn't turn on the TV till 10 am because that's when my favorite shows started (I checked on Wikipedia's TV schedules for Spring 1971) , and it's also possible that the TV station in my area was one that ignored the alert. My one surviving parent doesn't remember it at all, either in person or hearing from others about it.
I remember this well as I was working in radio at the time, although not on duty when this happen. Most stations ignored the alert and continued normal broadcasting which was in itself disturbing since this could have been the real thing. A lot of changes have been made in EBS since then, in fact it's now called the "Emergency Alert System" and uses digital coding.
WOW Bob Sievers, I grew up in FW Hearing Bob Sievers morn, Jack Underwood, Mid-Day,& Young Chris Roberts, Ron Gregery, aftterns & Bob Dell in the even.
WOWO was a flamethrowing 50,000 watt blow torch of the mid west.Top 40 format. AM radio, the 1st World Wide Web.

I heard that broadcast. I was 8 and living in Ft. Wayne and we had WOWO (or Woh-woh) on in the kitchen as usual and I got my pants scared off, but we didn't really believe it, because they didn't know why there was an alert or if it was real, and there wasn't any crisis leading up to it, but still, you never knew when the nukes were going to come back then, as everyone worried a lot about it. Didn't remember about the Partridge Family, though.

How many would have preferred Armageddon over having to listen to The Partridge Family?

I would have made the air force pay my laundry bill after that.

Too bad the non-music material seemed to be scoped.

The local Kmart did a brisk business in new underwear sales the day after this...

Obviously, this was all part of Richard Nixon's vendetta against Danny Bonaduce

Sievers would later give interviews where he said this was the longest five minutes of his life.

Sheesh. The suspense nearly killed me. (You should take "FALSE" out of the title...)

I recall there was another false EBS during the Yom Kippur War of October 1973.

@BigRIJoe The music really has more of a "say your prayers and prepare to die" feel to it.

@BigRIJoe Yeah, he could have just put the Partridge Family back on. I liked that song!
