Now that you starded reading this you have to finish it and if you dont you will get the curse. 10 years ago some kids got the curse and died the night they fell asleep. Repost this to 20 videos or else you will get the curse
I've seen that a few people are comparing Hobbes' Leviathan and Rousseau. I don't see much difference. Rousseau said that gov should use its coercive power to force people to do good.
Lastly, he decries philosophers while he himself found fame and fortune as a philosopher. My girlfriend told me he liked to get spanked. So he goes on and on about virtue... while he's getting his ass spanked.
Class is on Monday. Any comments before then would be appreciated.
@CentristRevolution - Yes, Rousseau was a complex character. He's so easy to dislike because of his hypocrisy: He was a moralist, but never married his woman; he wrote a book on raising a child, but sent his 5 children to the orphanage at birth; he failed to climb the social ladder, so condemned the rich and titled in all his works; he saw himself as a good man, but quarreled with and ill-treated every one of his friends. For this, people more often attack him than engage with his ideas.
If sciences and the arts corrupt, and they are to be exclusively centered around the ruling elite, the ruling elite will naturally become corrupt and immoral. So it's ok for the ruling elite to be snorting coke off a stripper's ass while the rest of us poor virtuous schmucks work and go to church?
My first reading of anything by Rousseau. I know nothing. Having said that, here's what I get from this discourse.
He seems to be arguing for a form of theocracy.
Education makes you gay, sounds like FoxNews.
Public education teaches the young useless things but not their obligations to God and the state, sounds like FoxNews.
Decries the fact that uneducated farmers who feed the nation are not held in high regard due to their lack of education. Sarah Palin’s “real Americans”.
Even though there are essential aspects in Rousseau's thoughts, and ideas that I agree with, there are some of them that I do not fully like or agree with.
I do however find myself more attracted to the ideas of Voltaire and John Locke. With a little bit of Rousseau's ideas, the combination of their philosophies would be outstanding.
Thnx for the audio mate :) Just finished 'Rousseau's Confessions' and planning to read 'Discourse on the Arts and Sciences'... but guess I m gonna listen now :D
The only trouble with Rousseau is that he was right. No matter what you do and where you come from, what your beliefs are... Rousseau was right. I even have a lil speech on my channel in which I state that I will never become a slave to civilization. "Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains." The counter-enlightenment Rousseau : )
True passion and victories resides in Africa..rimbaud no i wrote it..jim morrison would agree too..theres not one inventions that non anglos have yet improved on..the tiresome pale reasonings have become tiresome
it depends on how you interpret his social contract, i can pick holes in it left right and centre, and no i dont agree with it. yes it is pure democracy, but a pure system of laws never works, and i would have to spend a long time looking at other peoples interpretations until i can uderstant where rosseau lovers are coming from
It wouldn't have been cool in the time of Rousseau - he was universally banned by the church and was under threat of execution at several times in his life.
Merci Tanit ~ Bon travail!

Thank you for spreading these wise words. After all this time Rousseau still stands, to me, as the greatest philosopher.
