RX8 vs 350Z

I owned an Rx7 (which was better than the Rx8) prior to getting a '07 350z. I love the rev-happy rotary engine & test drove the Rx8 in hope that it would impress me. IT DID NOT. The ONLY thing I miss about my Rx7 is its agility. Though the Rx8 is also more agile than the 350 (because it's lighter in weight) the 350 has more torque, acceleration & stability. Also, it doesn't have gay "suicide" doors & pointless back seats. The Rx8 isn't the dedicated sports car that the Rx7 was. 350 all the way.

The 350Z and RX8 are good cars in their own way. And, I like both. Different cars suit different people with different needs. RX8 is more practical and comfortable with decent power while the Z has more power, torque and muscle. RX8 wasn't designed to be a hardcore sports car while its older brother, RX7, was. Rotary tuners and experts always feel that it is unfair to compare RX7 and RX8 together cause their design purpose was different in the first place. ;)

The rotary engine is MEANT to be run up over 8k, as long as you keep up on maintenance, I've seen people pull 600+hp out of the 12a, the rotary engine produced back in '79

BUT THEN AGAIN THERES OTHER PEOPLE THAT JUST TEST BOTH AND DRIVE FAST AND AUTOMATICALY THINK THAT THE 350Z IS BETTER. MAZDA RX-8 WILL ALWAYS BE A BETTER CAR HANDS DOWN.

@Jah2070 Uncomfortable; noise and harsh ride that even the most hardcore motorists frown upon it. Impractical, trunk space is so compromised, you may as well consider it has none. Pig, it's so heavy even G35 sedan with 4+4 layout weighs the same. So, as both car gets similar mpg, the only thing rx8 is lacking is power and everything else rx8 wins. Also turbo with methanol inejction, and it will have similar power with no loss in mpg. So I don't understand what you mean by a better car.

@LZKS look at all the reviews, 350Z is a better car than the RX8. I'm not stating my opinion, im just saying what all the top automotive magazines and car review experts are saying. And if you complain about the rough suspension, then clearly you never been in or really like true sports cars. For cash value 350z wins, for mpg, 350z wins, for reliabilty 350z wins, for innovation RX8 wins, luggage and trunk space RX8 wins, Power and torqe 350z wins, for standard stuff 350Z wins= a better car

@LZKS Don't get me wrong though, If I could afford both cars at the same time I would have them in a heart beat but the rx8 should'nt be compared to the 350Z because they are'nt really in the same class. The 350Z is designed to go after the porsche boxster, and the BMW Z4. They just compare the RX8 because their both newer rwd japanese sports cars.

the 350Z is more beautiful in the body, it also makes it aerodymanic car, it drifts with comfort, it turns left and right easily for so much weight and it runs faster than the RX-8, this is the reason for it's 5000 more expensive price and makes sure that it can't be defeated that easily and don't forget how older it is

He ido en los dos, y he conducido el 8, antes de verlos y probarlos me iba con el Z de cabeza; pero lo cierto es q el nissan es un coche mucho mas aburrido, suena mucho peor, es extrañamente pesado y tiene unos bajos realmente tristes; sin embargo el 8 se presenta ligero, increblemente confortable para el conductor; el 8 es increible; aunk ande un poco mas el Z yo me dencanto por el 8

i test drove both of them. the RX8 allthough very nice was no where near as fun. everything about the 350z is more brutal and manly, which makes it an absolute joy to drive. speaking of which. i'm off out for a blast in my Z!!! :D

running costs are very expensive on rotary engines, it's the same as the rx7's. Look after them though and they are fantastic engines. Personally though having recently driven the two, I much prefer the 370z over the RX-8, however I wouldn't say the same for the 350z.

i just want to clear up the oil thing, the RX burns oil in the combustion process in a similar way to the old two stroke motorbike engines, its not a fault, its a characteristic of the rotary engine so if you buy it, expect to top up your oil every few of tanks of fuel (or around 1500mls i think) it doesnt return good mpg numbers because it is in effect a 2.6ltr performance car. It does need to be handled differently from a standard piston engine but that is not a negative its just DIFFERENT! I

If we wanted a 0-60 car, it would not be the z either. I would get an slp firehawk or something of that nature. If you want a good all around car that can do everything well, the 8 is the way to go but, if you are worried about maintenance and are too lazy to properly take care of a car, dont get the 8 as it is not for everyone.

i own an rx8,... and unless your a real dummy lol.. maintaining it is not hard at all.. its basically adding oil here and there..cleaning air filter.. changing oil... etc.... things that anybody can do... and it can fly... just cuz its not so fast 0-62 doesnt mean it cant fly....

the rx8 is one of the best cars ever made... period... people who bash it for its lack of power , and maintaince and reliabilty, just dont buy it or even drive it,,, i personally would never get rid of my rx8, i love it, even a simple drive anywhere can be relaxing and so dam enjoyable. i love my rx8.

its takes a special person to own a rx8 because its takes more maintenance then a normal car, and really the only thing good about it is the 9000 red line , and that doesn't even make it that fast, i mean i am not saying it super slow but why would you do all that maintenance if the car doesnt really have any big advantages. mazda really needs to follow Nissans 370z , and upgrade there car to kick some ass :)

it's not really high maintenance. just regular oil checks and top offs because it WILL consume a bit of oil (about 1 liter per 5000km under regular use), which is part of the rotary engine experience.

Great video. I love the blending so we can see both cars together.

I drove a Z, Rx-8, S2000 and SKY Redline when I was deciding on the car I wanted.

The RX-8 is limp-wristed and boring. The S2000 is incredible quality and top of the line, but a bit too small. The SKY is an even better value, but even smaller. At 6'3 I just don't fit in those two.

The Z is powerful, masculine and had the biggest "smile factor" for me. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it.

Totally agree with you....you have to drive an RX-8, and you have to have a prior appreciation of handling (not just power), in order to understand the beautiful chassis tuning of the RX-8. However, I really think Mazda underserved this amazing machine in the power arena. The chassis is way too much faster than the engine!

I have an '04 Mazda 6 and it's one thing after another. Grinding starter, clutch went at 50K miles, just like most of them, everything squeaks and rattles, passenger window doesn't go down all the way, etc.

I seriously doubt that an RX8 is much better. If it is, I'd be amazed.

ive done 48000 kms in my rx8, and my mate got one with 80000km. my problems consist of worn out coolant seals for driving through a 10 day heat wave, and my mates previous owner, perfect record. mazda cracked all the problems with the rx7s and theres a reason the rx8 is the new flagship, top quality.

The turbo kit, axel and tires, disc brakes, tuning...etc... basicly everything else you need to get in order for your car to function as an efficient turbo car you'll be looking at $10k. Ask your mom and dad If you can sell it and buy a Z. You'll get better gas mileage and they make great turbo/supercharged car
