This is one of several songs I grew up with as a kid. While I had no idea what kind of message it was sending (too young at the time), I loved this song. I never knew it was considered soul either and it is an excellent dedication song.
What the hell happened to this kind of great black music? All the hip-hop and rap CRAP that passes for music in the black community can't hold a candle to black music from the 60's & 70's. Stylistics, Delfonics, Temps, Smokey Robinson, .... Motown rules!
One of the things that I find interesting is the thought that we are looking at a bunch of grandparents on that dance floor. That's just how old this song is. It's definitely a goody too.
Youtube thank you for this wonderful song displayed on here, I love it so much, and I use to watch Soul Train growing up, I love The Stylistics especially this song, it's so heartfelt, I have for years, I grew up in Motown Detroit as a kid. Sincerely,
i'm 15. Tell me where can I find a girlfriend who has a reciprocal love! Today's teen are trivial, frivolous(to put it mildly) GOD WHY I WASN'T BORN IN THE 70's?
@t3l3k1n3s1s Just wait, you will find someone that suits you. don't settle, but have fun in the meantime. For my girlfriend and me, this was "our song" #5+ years ago. No we are not still together. But she would have been one I could have been with til this day. I've met 1 or 2 like that since then. They are out there.
@t3l3k1n3s1s you'll find her. I was born in the 60's and grew up onthis stuff. When you fond her you'll know, take care of her and be honest with her and she'll never let you go!
@t3l3k1n3s1s Well my brother you think a way I do I'm 30 and grew up with the great music. I can tell you it's not easy finding the right partner for you. We are only a few who appreciates the great things. Someone who you can finally tell her ..." you make me feel brand new."
@t3l3k1n3s1s I understand your feelings. I was teenager in the 70s and I had a lot of fun. Lucky I didn't mix with wrong crowd... Many of my friends are dead... I'm 52. There is good and bad in every era... You'll find the girl in due time.... Keep visualizing!!! Best wishes.

Too bad there isn't this calibre of singing groups in The Music Industry these days; If there were, I believe that my generation would have groups that could compete with The Spinners as well as The Stylistics. Oh well...
if you are someone who claims to appreciate the music of the 1970's / i think all of us would appreciate it if you don't use any CURSE WORDS to express yourself / we eloquently expressed ourselves in our music and to our women without using CURSE words / increase your vocabulary or don't say anything / i'm simply asking you to RESPECT the SPIRIT OF THE 1970'S / INTELLIGENT SELF EXPRESSION OF FEELINGS OF LOVE / no curse words ARE EVER NECESSARY WHEN "LOVE IS THE MESSAGE" / PEACE !
@80sray I agree with you 100%, don't you notice that in those days there were less violence in the world in general. Today gangsta rap has no respect or even mention good feelings like love, friendship, and so on, all that they sing are things like "kill the muthafuka, kill the bitch". And we wonder why are we living in a such violent society??
No other decade of time can touch the 1970's when it comes to SONGS EXPRESSING BEAUTIFUL FEELINGS TO A WOMAN / WE PEOPLE who lived through and ENJOYED the 1970's are THE BLESSED GENERATION when it comes to having ROMANTIC MEMORIES OF LOVING FEELINGS WE HAD FOR SOMEONE or SPECIAL LOVE-MAKING MEMORIES / because there were so many beautiful songs / to truly experience ROMANCE all other generations have to come to THE CLASSIC WELL OF THE 1970's OR STARVE!

@druhbe1996 .........I could'nt agree more! The 70's represented High School, College, my first job & first relationship with the opposite sex......in other words, A VERY IMPORTANT TIME IN MY LIFE. If you recall, going to the Music store "back in the day" was like a trip to Baskin-Robbins.......SO MANY FLAVORS! The Stylistics, Chi-Lites, Blue Magic, Temptations, O'Jays, Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire......I spent a small FORTUNE on music back then!
@druhbe1996 While I agree with the emotion of the sentiment (specifically in context of listening to this wonderful song), you're really shitting on a bunch of really wonderful lyricists from all generations. Lay off the hyperbole, holmes.
I'm from Detroit and when I was 7, the summer baby sitter we had was girlfriend of one of the stylistics, I always loved their music, I remember meeting 2 of them once, but very foggy childhood memory, glad to see they have fans on youtube
People, People! We grew up in a world where family and love were important. The world has changed!!!!
hip hop didnt kill anything, (time) killed whatever you thought was better.
if hip hop was never conceived, you'd be blaming some other shit for the death of soul.
music and style comes and goes in cycles and people will always complain, like people that listen to hip hop will complain about how shit the music that his/her kid listens to is.
the moment you cant move on is the moment you get OLD and uncool.
if you're 60, snap a record in half and say fuck the police, you just regain'd coolness
@noseyasalways close-mindedness gets us nowhere. i don't have any problem with your overall message, but there's no need to be homophobic. thats just irrational and it makes you look weak.
I am 53, from the big Apple. Grew up listening to all this music. I am so glad I grew up during those times, it started in 76 for me then it ran all the way to 83 when I joined the Marines. I hung out tough for 7 years in the best city in the world. Loved it. Worked all day, partied all night and then repeated.
Tragically today, when many white religious Americans talk of rap they are exclusively referring to gangster rap and the song "Cop Killer", as if this is indicative of the whole genre and Not given the tunes that made it famous, such as The Message by Grandmaster flash, which is as fresh and poignant a warning shot about fake black role model movie stereotypes today as it was then. Look it up, read the words.
@vapourmile The Message is the greatest rap song ever. It's true poetry from the streets. It hits you in the face, the stomach, and the ass. And it demands a better world. All other rap stands in its shadow.
@vapourmile Yes. Absolutely. Histrionics would be superfluous, because the poetry of The Message is too real and strong. The Message is like reality slapping you in the face. Once you hear it, you stay slapped.
But give it up for old soul like The Stylistics here. These songs have their own emotional reality sorely missing from anything manufactured in today's studios.
(Also, ain't no one but a brother can sing in falsetto and look and sound cool doin' it. You know?)
@cgord37 thats stupid stament thats why are country is so fuck up because people like you hate get life dude if dont like Black Music then dont lission ok Man i dont want to here your crap eather ok?????
@icebergen78 once agin, my friend...GANGSTA rap destroyed black music! oh, and by the way...I love parliament/funkadelic, bar-kays, ohio players, chi-lites, cameo, bootsy ,dramatics, etc.these are BLACK ARTISTS...
I am sorry but I don't like most rap music. I like rap songs like Grand Master Flash's "The Message" and some of the early rap songs. Those songs really did express the sentiment of those who lived in the hood. But the modern rap( of the past 20 years) is filled with derogatory language, violence, and hatred towards women. I just can't support music like that. Music is supposed to inspire you to love and be positive. No, too much rap promotes negativity and that in itself is tragic.
Rumbo a los 37 años prendias la radio y esta sonaba en Agosto de 1974 si toda una joya musical de aquellos tiempos como la maquina del tiempo recordar es volver a vivir
I have to agree with the prior commenter. I don't mean to offend any African Americans reading this, but the rap that is put out now just does not compare to the wonderful music you contributed to society in the sixties and seventies.
sad how geeks get on here and try 2 turn this into a conversation about rap...if u dont like rap dont listen 2 it, plain and simple....just enjoy the post u bunch of hypocritical bums
So beautiful. I heard it daily on the long school bus ride in the morning and afternoon, as a freshman in high school. KFRC San Francisco. God, what a song.
Unbelievable song and footage of one of the greatest singing groups of all time.

noseyasalways 5 months ago

Look it up, read the words.
vapourmile 6 months ago 10
@vapourmile The Message is the greatest rap song ever. It's true poetry from the streets. It hits you in the face, the stomach, and the ass. And it demands a better world. All other rap stands in its shadow.
bapyou 5 months ago
@bapyou Thanks, I agree.
vapourmile 5 months ago
@bapyou I also like the way the words are delivered. There no hysterics or histrionics, he just says it. From beginning to end he just says it.
vapourmile 5 months ago
@vapourmile Yes. Absolutely. Histrionics would be superfluous, because the poetry of The Message is too real and strong. The Message is like reality slapping you in the face. Once you hear it, you stay slapped.
But give it up for old soul like The Stylistics here. These songs have their own emotional reality sorely missing from anything manufactured in today's studios.
(Also, ain't no one but a brother can sing in falsetto and look and sound cool doin' it. You know?)

I have to agree with the prior commenter. I don't mean to offend any African Americans reading this, but the rap that is put out now just does not compare to the wonderful music you contributed to society in the sixties and seventies.
