Thank you for bringing back some long forgotten memories of my beautiful grandmother! Her nails were always manicured to perfection. Back in the day, it was believed that it was unhealthy to paint the moons of one's nails, which is how the trend actually began. It was somehow thought that leaving the moons unpolished was necessary to allow "impurities" to flow from the body. Totally weird, right?
Konnichiwa, I remember my Grandmother always had this lovely style...she always was so well put together, very classy look. Thank you for putting this video up ♥♥
I've been trying to think of how I want to do my nails for my birthday party this weekend, and when I saw this I knew I found what I was looking for! Thanks!
Also, having the nails filed to an oval or even a "sharp" oval was in vogue back then. I don't know how the gals kept their nails long because we now know that filing into a point weakens nails but they did look nice and more feminine.
I was just watching 'Angel' with Marlene Dietrich and they showed a close up on her nails, and they were exactly like this! I was like "how has she done that..." so I came on youtube to see what I could find on 30s nails and here you are!!!
There is something about this manicure style that seems more feminine and dainty than the other types. I love it and the entire 30's decade! Women were the most beautiful then, in my opinion. I feel like successive generations of women have lost that quality. Not that we aren't beautiful, but so many of us just don't put the effort into looking good that the women of the 30's, 40's and 50's did.
I love this era and all the looks that go with it. I never knew that they didn't paint the moons of their nails. That was really really interesting. I think I might try this, thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH for playing actual classic jazz with your 1930s tutorial. I'm so tired of hearing yucky neo swing with these kind of vintage tutorials!
Also I have looked up some information about 1930s style, and it seems that in the early to mid 1030s woman had their nails cut shorter about an 1/8 of an inch from the finger, but you've got the oval shape right.
I suppose that depends on the woman. I love Joan Crawford's tallon like nails. They were filed to a sharp point, which of course is entirely impractical, but very cool. And you are correct, I'd be happier with a cleaner finished result, but I need more time & practice!
I always wondered how to avoid painting the moons of my nails for the vintage manicure but I never thougt of using French manicure strips! I'll have to try this technique out, it looks lovely!!
Holy moly! Some people write such nasty things don't they! I happen to love what you have done here and think that you have recreated the look wonderfully and accurately! Dita has beautiful nails but they are not necessarily true to the period you have gone for, you have nailed it (pardon the pun sweetness!) I have subcribed to you also, I was quite excited when I saw your other videos and that you are from Australia!
Also, this isn't an accurate 1930's manicure. I think what you were trying to imitate when you tried to "french tip" the end (but not really) was a particular manicure where Yes, the end wasn't painted red (for example) but it was NOT such a huge space like that, it was a very thin ring at the tip of the nail, almost unnoticeable. People need to do REAL research. There were even ads from the 30s that showed how it was supposed to look, and this isn't it.
If you read the accompanying article and see the photos from the era, you'll see that there was a variation in the space left at the tip. It also explains who and why this was practiced. It is really a personal choice. As for the strips, I've tried to make it easy for beginners rather than using a much more tricky freehand technique..
What exactly is your problem? You complain that somebody isn't doing their research yet it seems you don't seem to understand at all what the poster of the video was trying to achieve. Read the article. The poor woman has put up a video that she isn't being paid for, just to be nice and helpful to people and you come along and tell her she is doing it all wrong. Its just not polite.
Um, what's wrong with everyone on these comments? No offense but this is totally NOT how Dita does her nails. She doesn't do a french tip, and definitely doesn't frenchtip strips either. At the end of this video, the nails aren't even neat. Is no one actually looking? Off color too. Blah. There are too many videos on YouTube claiming to have Dita nails and they AREN'T. If I had a video camera I'd consider doing my nails myself on it so people wouldn't be so MISinformed.
I'm not saying that this is the exact style that Dita does her's, just that she uses a vintage technique. I can do one specifically for that, but ths is a generalization of the technique of the era. I'm not sure what you mean by off colour, but that could be a result of the photographs.
Great Vid! Love the music and the great hairstyles, etc. You remind so much of my aunt with the way she used to fix her hair. When I was a kid I would stay with her a few weekends in the summer and she would listen to the big band music, old movies from the 30's - 40's and would always have these old movie magazines lying around her apartment. It was so much fun staying with her!

I think they look unfinnished, like your need to go over the moon and the tip with white or something
Hattie1994 5 months ago
@Hattie1994 With our eyes trained for a modern look, that's not surprising, but it is the way it was done to leave these areas without polish.
superkawaiimama 2 weeks ago
@superkawaiimama its very pretty with just the moon left bare i think, the tip just kind of makes it looked chipped

I'm not being disrespectful by asking this but, what exactly makes this style "1930's vintage style"?
kelaltieri 1 year ago
@kelaltieri having the half moon and tip stay unpolished is what makes this 1930's style :-)

@ValGrl82 Thanks for clarifying! It looks great!

Thank-you for this video. The trick of using manicure strips is clever and helpful, however, I find the finished result slightly sloppy...
