  • Thanks a lot joseph!! I've taken toefl recently and got a 27/30 in the writing part.Your structure gave me an idea as how to respond for the question!!!thanks again!:)

  • The article states that ______ and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that _____ and refutes each of the article's reasons.

First, the reading claims that ____. The professor refutes this point by saying that _____ He states that _____

Second. the article posits that ______ However, the professor says that ____ according to the professor _____

Third, the reading says that _____ the professor opposes this point by explaining that _____ we also learn that

  • Does anybody knows if the writing part written in the computer or in paper??

  • @fjugui Hi there. If you're taking the iBT version of the exam, you will have to type out your essay on the computer. Best of luck!

  • By practising essays, I had an article discribing 3 different strategies (for raising children) and in the lecture, the professor did not really refute it (the article also did not include any opinion-it was only based on conducted research), he only talked about 1 strategy and its drawbacks and about what he prefers instead.

How should I organized this kind of essay?

Thanks a lot, your videos are really great and helpful!

  • @2012JuliaJulia Hi Julia. Unfortunately, this doesn't sound like a genuine TOEFL question. Please stick with practice materials in which the article presents 4 claims about a topic and in which the lecture refutes each claim. This is the only kind of question 1 essay we (and our students) have ever seen. Best of luck!

  • Hi Joseph! I found your videos through a couple of friends; they were very useful for speaking and writing. Ive just got my scores: reading, listening and writing, 29, and 24 in speaking, and although I did not get the "magic 26" in speaking, Im sure I would had performed much worst hadnt I seen your videos before! THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKS

  • Hi, thank you for giving tips for Toefl exam. I just want to ask you that not including conclusion paragraph is ok for score? what if I cant write enough word when the time left is about to run out? because I can write conclusion easier than other paragraph. Is it no use writing conclusion paragraph to increase words?

  • @a14nuts Hi there. You're right; a conclusion paragraph is not needed and not recommended. It's best to include as much content from the lecture as possible. Adding a conclusion to increase your word count isn't a good idea because it won't provide specific content or detail. Focusing on a conclusion will not add anything to your score and it will eat up valuable time. Focus on improving your ability to take in the content from the article and lecture. Best of luck!

  • Took my exam recently,,, in this question the writing quest. number one the listening section in it was soooooooooooooo fast i could barely take notes ! how to improve that!

  • Hello Joseph, I found your videos when searching for TOEFL resources. It was really helpful, to say the least. I just got my results - I got 113/120. I got 27/30 in both Reading & Speaking; 29/30 in Listening; and, 30/30 in Writing! Thank you so much!

  • Hello Joseph! I cannot thank you enough for your help. Your videos are the best and easiest to understand. I did not prepare for my TOEFL and I just gave the exam in the moment. I just went through your videos for speaking and writing a day before the exam. I would really say that they really helped boost my score. The first thing I thought of when I got my score was to thank you. So THANK YOU! This was my first attempt at TOEFL. My score : 107 (R29,L25,S24,W29) Thank you very very much.

  • Very nice video. Got 27 in writing using your tips mostly.

  • thanks...

  • Hi guys : i want im arabian ,, and iwant go to americabut im not good in english ,, what can i do

  • Hey Joseph, i will sit TOEFL in 6 days. I went through all of your videos concerning the speaking and the writing sections and my question is are you sure that the questions will be exactly the same as you stated them? Because i downloaded some free TOEFL tests of Kaplan, dunno if you've heard of them and some of their questions are different, especially question #1 in the writing section. I'd appreciate it if you responded to me quickly. Thank you in advance!

  • @92hardstyler Hi there. All of our tips, strategies, and materials are based on the actual TOEFL. All of our teachers have taken the exam before and are familiar with the format. Rest assured, you can definitely follow the content found in this video to help you on the exam. Best of luck!

  • Hi Joseph, Thanks a lot for your tips. Just got my TOEFL score. Got 30 in writing and 24 in speaking. I was nervous while speaking but got good score overall. Couldn't have scored much without your tips. Thanks a lot!!!

  • I had my TOEFL today, and even though I don´t know my score yet I want to recommend everyone to follow the advice of this great teacher. To be honest I was hesitating a little bit in the beggining that I could find reliable information of the test in youtube but I was sooo wrong. Every tip that Joseph gives is very useful and the format of the questions are exactly as he says. Thank you so much Joseph, you are amazing!!

  • Dear joseph, thanks alot and i hope you reply me soon as i have the test this Saturday. In the q1 writing, they ask us to summarize the lecture and contrast it with the points made by the author. But according to your video,we just give a brief intro by stating the opinions of the writer and the author and then present the conflicting views as we go forward..shouldn't we summarize main ideas/opinions more properly in the intro ? i also find it difficult to point out opinions from first para

  • Hii Joseph!! A really wonderful video lectures....Thanks a lot for your help

    I got my score yersterday Reading-27 Listening-25 Speaking-22 Writing-22

I practiced some KAPLAN and LONGMAN CDs downloaded from torrents and the questions are not in the format of your videos.***But the actual questions in the exam are exactly in the

form of your videos....The videos really boosted my confidence...

    Thanks again...

    in the format

  • Hi Joseph@NoteFulldotcom

    Thanks for your helpful videos!

Anyway, I just noticed in sample answer in "Official Guide to the TOEFL" released by ESL, that some of "score 5 sample answer" provided there only mention about lecture not about passage. So, I guess passage is just provided to give us prediction about the point of the lecture. So i assume taht actually what they expect for perfect score is just answer about main idea and details from the lecture. Could you explain me about this?

  • @rezadonk Hi there. Unfortunately, it seems like those materials might not be 100% accurate if the passage wasn't mentioned in the example. The purpose of the integrated writing is to contrast the material you read in the passage with the lecture. The focus should be on the content from the lecture, but it is absolutely crucial to mention the article's claims first. I hope that clears it up.

  • Joseph, first of all your a very good tutor..

In the first question of writing is it always 3 reasons in the reading passage ? can it be different .. THANKS

  • I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Just received my scores and they are 26/27/28/28!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am still shocked!!!!!!! I didn't expect that AT ALL. I must say that it was because of your videos, which I found one day before taking the test. Those tips SAVED me. I must also say that your speaking tips are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! I'm truly thankful because you spend your time doing these videos. Thanks again! i'll post it in all of your videos.

  • i have an inquiry, about the paragraph you have provided in the projector, i mean the professor's reasons, you wrote down 2 spaces for each reason ?!!

what's the point of this ??

  • is it okay if i wrote 3 paragraphs ? please thumps up :( i want to know

thank you Joseph your videos are so helpful

  • @RemiTa1st Hi there. We definitely wouldn't recommend writing a 3-paragraph essay. There should always be at least one paragraph to introduce the claim/counterclaim. The remaining 3 paragraphs should include the 3 reasons the article provides and how the professor refutes each one. Some students also choose to include a 5th, conclusion paragraph. However, this is unnecessary, optional, and should only be included if time allows. I hope this helps!

  • Thankyou joseph. When I saw everyone telling that they got scores above 100. I did not believe but it works and I got 110/120

  • reading section is hard because of the academic hard words

and writing section is hard because i'm not use to write anything and i don't have much words :( i'm now studying "400 must have words in the TOEFL test " and i really like it but the problem is i only have like 30 days to prepare myself for the exam .. i really love your videos

    WISH ME LUCK :D

  • Thanks for the tips!!

  • Joseph, I just received my scores for the TOEFL and was surprised to see that my highest score was in the speaking section, all thanks to your videos.

Your help was simply amazing and certainly invaluable.

My TOEFL scores are the following: reading: 26, listening: 27, speaking: 28, writing: 27.

  • @NoteFulldotcom hi joseph, thank you for your helps. I have a question about writing Q1. Do they always give three support in the reading passage and three against in the lecture? In some TOEFL sources, they give one long paragraph. It is difficult to seperate main ideas from there.

  • @lakka7634 Hi. You're right; the passage and the lecture will both state a claim and they will always provide 3 reasons to support their claims. On the test, the passage will be in the form of 4 paragraphs. It sounds like the sources you mentioned might not be very good, unfortunately. I would avoid using them as a practice. As you stated, it makes the task much more difficult. Therefore, it probably wouldn't be useful for you. Good luck!

  • Thx you so much for your tips! I scored 104/120!

  • Don't we need to paraphraze the reading passage? The essay should include more information from the professor or the same as the passage? Thank you Joseph for your very useful videos, a perfect guide for every student. :)

  • @irinagr In Q2 we will first paraphrase or restate the article's claim (usually only one sentence). We would want to spend the majority of our time explaining why and how the professor refutes the passage (2 or more sentences).

  • i dunno if 97 is a good score... but 27 in writing~!!!!!!!!!!!!11 thanks a lot joseph! :)

  • Got less in speaking 24, would;ve got 15 if not for your videos. And your writing tips helped too. Got 30 in that! :)

Got 109 total. Thanks a lot.. I mean A LOT!

  • hello joseph.... had admired your videos after my exam on 24th and today my results speak for them too got a 29 on speaking .... thanks a lot .... to exam goers.. even on the last day go through these videos and practice by recording your answers and listening to them... thanks joseph.

  • So, is it really better to write 2 body paragraphs instead of 3?

  • Thank you sooo much for All your guidance! You helped me achieve 112 and i Will always be grateful for that!!!:) thanks for keeping my dreams alive a bit longer

  • I think josefp is the main mentor that can teach tactics of TOEFL.

  • Thank You Joseph 27/30 on the writing task :)

  • The speaking section was such a breeze thanks to your fill-in-the-blank approach. I will strongly recommend your videos to anyone taking up the TOEFL. THANK YOU SO MUCH Joseph and God bless you :) !!

  • Joseph, Thank you so very much for your help. ‘AMAZING’ would be an understatement for your videos! I love how precise and to-the-point your instructions are. I can honestly say that it was entirely due to watching your videos that I scored a 112/120 in my TOEFL exam, on the first try, with 30/30 in both Speaking and Writing, 29/30 in Listening and 23/30 in Reading (ran out of time in the end…boo hoo). Your tips helped me structure my answers so much better.

  • Hi Joseph. Thanks for all the support you provide us for coping this exam. I have a problem though. i was practicing with Kaplan's Toefl IBT book and it clearly states that we should paraphrase what we read and listen. Yet, you suggest that we don't have to paraphrase. Also Kaplan says we should read actively but you suggest we should skim the reading after getting only the key points. Should i stop studying Kaplan?

  • I'm using Barron's TOEFL IBT, and it states the same thing about paraphrasing, but I'm not convinced completely, In such a short time you can barely take notes of what the speaker says,so the only thing you can do is restate it. Is my opinion that not only Kaplan but all the other books such as Barron's,can not completely cover all the details, so you need to read other books dedicated only to the speaking and writing section, I just purchased the other day two books, one is only for the essays..

  • and only for those who want to achieve no less than 28 in the writing section,(sample essays and study guide TOEFL IBT)it's an e-book and you can find it at amazon, along with another book (Speaking and Writing Strategies for the TOEFL iBT (Book & Audio CD)) which covers both speaking and write, also I was thinking to buy (Writing for the TOEFL iBT with Audio CD, 4th Edition (Barron's), I don't know, maybe I'm exaggerating with all these books, but better than repeating the test! :P

  • You are an amazing teacher.

  • Thank you so much for these videos!! They are really really helpful!

I still have one question though. You "encouraged" us to not really think about paraphasing the lecture, but to reproduce what has been said.

What about the essay? Would it be okay if I copy some parts or should I paraphrase here? Thanks again and hope to hear from you..

  • Thank you so much for this!! On my last test back in 09, when I was in 8th grade I scored a 28 with this method! Well I'm back as a Junior to take the test and try to get a 110+,(Came by to refresh my memory! :3 ) So yeah, thank you for this and to everyone else who's taking the test tomorrow -GOOOD LUUCCKKKK!!!!

  • In the writing section of the TOEFL do you have to TYPE your answers or can you write them on the scratch paper that is given to you? Thank you to anyone who can answer!

  • If i use more words in the essay, i get a better score?

  • @Camii1231 The ideal word count is 250 for Q1 and 500 for Q2. But remember, content is the most important aspect of the essays that will determine your score.

  • @NoteFulldotcom Thank you so much!

  • @Camii1231

I really liked your posting and could you please tell me tempelate of it or you can send me at mahesh.sarki@yahoo.com

  • @maheshsarki i'm so sorry i haven't see this message since today, if you need help tell me. I'll be glad to help you :)

  • hi Joseph,

i gave my toefl exam on 9th july. a friend of mine told me about your videos on youtube. seriously man, just 3 days of practice and yo videos fetched me 102 on the ibt. ever since i aimed to give this test i was not thinking of more than 79, this was the minimum requirement. Man YOU are awesome! too good! THANKS! again !

  • Hello Joseph. Thank you so much for your videos! I have a question. My teacher told me not to read the whole topic. She thinks it's a waste of time. She told me to read only the first sentences of each paragraph. I think she was wrong. How will I understand what is written in the text? What do you think?

  • @booklovergirl89 I also recommend my students to only read the first sentences of each paragraph. Otherwise, students tend to run out of time to finish the reading passages. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

  • @NoteFulldotcom i wanna ask questions about integrated writing task 1.

When the time for writing the response starts then at that time can i again see the reading passage ???

  • these videos are soooo helpful.thanks a lott

  • Hi. Joseph I want to ask one question. Now i prepare for Toefl and I have an exam next month. I think i will get high score but if i can't i want to prepare for the exam with you. My question is in which coarse you work and where?

  • hey man thanks for your videos. I took the toefl about a month ago and i did great, i got a 102. It was not enough because i got a 22 in the writing section and i needed a 25, i am taking it again this Saturday, but i really did good in the other sections, plus 25. thanks and keep it up and I hope you have been rewarded for helping people.

  • He was so great teacher and he summarized writing task one briefly. I really like this kind of show. I enjoyed this show.

  • I just got my socres and I got W:25 and L:23. Thank you very much Joseph your writing and listening videos helped me a lot !

  • Im a lazy student. I didnt study for the toefl. However, in the morning after my breakfast just watched this video and did my writing great.

Thank you very much sir. The exam was exactly like this format.

  • Thanks Joseph, a very good video. My question: what is the necessary/ideal number of words for this Writing 1 part?

  • This is a great video. I used it and Writing question 1 was so easy..Its like filling in the blanks..you just need to paraphrase a bit and there it goes..I got 27 in writing..so happy coz my previous was only 24. Thanks a lot Joseph!

  • thank you for tips! I got 27 in writing. It's great change compared to my previous 22!

  • could you please tell me like how much words or paragraphs do I need to produce for Writing Question # 1?

  • Joe, I saw some sample integrated writings which did not follow this model. It consisted of 2 paragraphs. One summarized the content of the reading, one was about the listening. I feel confused. What are the differences between those two? Besides, what if I missed one idea in the lecture? How can I continue to write the essay?

  • Your videos and website are very helpful, my test went well and I got 99!! Thank you so much, Joseph!

  • God Bless you Mr.Joseph

  • thank you so much, I just finished my first experience in TOEFL ibt !

this video specifically was incredibly helpful for me today

I always ask Allah (our God) to guide you to Islam ,,, to share the happiness!

  • i have a question about the structure of this essay..should it be compsed the way you propouse sentance by sentance opposing statements and is it correct to write it as the first passage is similar to the one proposed but the body parts are two short summariez, the first paragraph of the reading section and the second of the lecture..or is it correct to oppose opinions in the body parts..

  • God bless you teacher this is so helpful for me...

  • Perfect presentation, the best I could find.

Please, contact me. My test is in 5 days.

    With great appreciation,

    Nana.

  • I used these videos as my soul support for Toefl preparation. and they simply ROCk!! with just 4days preparation i got 101 ...

    God bless you Joseph

  • Hi

  • Hi..u mentioned that reading essays for integrated writing part will be 4 paragraphs....Will it always be 4 paragraphs??? i have seen some example essays with 1 large paragraph n also with 3 paragraphs. i want to just make sure if its always 4 paragraph. pls help me

    thank u

  • I have noticed that some of the things you say differ from Barron's speaking and writing tests provided. For instance, your advice on Personal Preference question doesnt suits to Describe the perfect mariage partner or Describe how do you celebrate birthdays in your country. As a matter of fact,I think that you're right because through many opinions,Barrons seemed not close enough to real test.

P.S.I am very thankful for your videos. They're great.Wish you luck in your further work.Marten

  • How many reasons I have to write in the independent writing? Someone says 2, others at least 3...

  • @NoteFulldotcom

Hi joseph i am takin the test day after tommorow... i just wanted to ask a simple question regarding repitition of sentences like : 'First, The author states that 'and then again :' Second, The author states that.' and then following. do marks get cut due to this and also can i add somethings like " The professor on the other hand states that " and also that i had seen some paragraphs and it contained only 1-2 reasons only.

    Please respond!

thanks for helping my speaking improve!

  • Hi Joseph. You are such a good Teacher. The material provided by you is so useful that I'm sure everybody will get the best scores.

Keep doing what you are doing in the same way (perfect!!!!)

  • hi joseph. You said you dont have to paraphrase the words of professors, but how about those in the reading. If I wanna write that the reading claims that animals are treated well in zoos. Is that alright, if I use it in this form exactly as the reading says ("Animals are treated well in zoos" paragraph 2 of the example on your page). thanks

  • HI Joseph!!

I just received my scores, I got 114 with 27 in speaking and 30 in writing..Thank you very much for your help through these videos . God bless you!

  • Hi Joseph! Using your template I got 30/30 on writing. Thank you!

  • Hi Joseph! I just recently got my scores and I have 104! I think it's enough for me so THANK YOU!

Even though I've been preparing for the test (various books), I used your tips and methods on my actual test day.

I used them for both S and W and got - 23 and 27 in them correspondingly.

So again, thank you very much for your videos and work!

  • how many words are we expected to write ?

  • thank you! very professional

  • i think that when yo splaint hings, you should not place so many circles, they can be very confusing, and distracting. The explanation you give just with the words is perfect!! ;)

  • Hola, I presented the Toefl today and ihad been watching your videos for the past few days.

This tips you gave were very handy as offcourse they wanted you to state the opinion on what it was said on the lecture. (agree or dissagree) It was veyr important to focus on the lecture rather than ont he text, and develop the 3 arguments with the supporting details. I think I did great!

  • Hey Jospeh, I'm passing it tomorrow... And it's the second time because I missed the first one (81pts only). I'm little bit stressed now. I hope I'll manage!

  • Joseph! you are a fecking LEGEND!!!

  • Hi Joseph

Thank you for these great advices.

I just scored 104 in IBT all thanks to you and my past education. I didn't really study for the test except for watching your videos and I scored 29R 29L 22S 24W.

  • Hi Joseph !

I would like your opinion on something, I have just scored 27R 29L 27S 22W. Should I ask a re-score in the writing part ? I got a 5 in the essay, but apparently there was a problem with the integrated task. By the way, how do I do that ?

    Many Thanks

  • @lufesouza1 hello,

your marks are very very good, I wonder that if you live in the US or somewhere else?

I guess I will be ruined against IBT..

  • Are you totally sure that the writing question 1 is always gonna deal with some kind of opposition ? Because in my training book, some of the question 1 are not about an opposition of opinion between the reading and the lecture, but about joining the two sources information to write something about the topic.. I'm scared !!

  • Thankss a lot. I gave my exam and even got my scores.Yes I done it :)

Your videos were really very very helpful.

  • Hi Joseph! My test is on 29th Oct & I'm learning a lot through your vedios. Its just that I cant find most of the links you refer to. On your site also, I could not find the 5-6 page explanation about how to address the writing section. Plz help.

Had one more doubt. What is the no of words requirement to get a good score in writing Q no 1. Looking forward for your response. Thanks.

  • Joseph you are a great teacher i really aprreciate your videos and it gave me a lot of help. But i have a doubt right now. Im preparing tue test with a book and in the writing quetion 1 of the practice test there are no reasons, just examples. So im a little bit confused to follow what you said. Please answer me and thanks a lot

  • Is the lecture always against the reading? OR Will it sometimes support the reading passage? Thanks...I like your videos

  • @trout44 Yes, it will always oppose the reading. I've never seen an actual TOEFL test that supports it or does anything different. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Comment removed

  • @NoteFulldotcom

Hi Joseph! I'll be taking my test this Saturday and your guidelines have helped me alot in my preparations so far. But I'm curious about the same thing as trout44. I did some model-tests from the Barrons book, and there are some writing tasks, where the lecture rather provides some additional information, alternative solution etc. than opposes the reading...

  • so maybe this will not be the case in the actual test?!...

  • @NoteFulldotcom i wanna ask questions about integrated writing task 1.

Q- moreover most of the listening ( lecture) of the integrated writing task 1 goes abov my head as the speakr goes so fast .in the Barrons practice CD a script is also present below the picture of the speaker which becomes easy for me to understand what the speaker is saying.i wanna know whether the same thing ( the sccript along with the speakr lecture ) will be available on the actual test???

  • @trout44 Joseph said that always the listening part refutes the writting. In my experience is exactly like that

  • Hello sir!

I just cant THANK YOU enough sir!i just got my score,i got 105:R25,L23,S29 :-) W28:-) I'm not exaggerating ,its the truth that i prepared only 2 days and it was my 1st attempt.your videos have done wonders to my scores since i solely relied on the format that are provided for the speaking and the writing sections.i wish more and more students benefit the way i did.

THANKS AGAIN.May God bless u.what u are doing is commendable:-)

  • Hey Joseph..

First of all, a big THANK YOU!! Jus received my TOEFL scores.. Got 111(R-28,L-30,S-24,W-29).. Your videos on Youtube were very beneficial in preparing me for the TOEFL exam.. I was very lucky to come across your videos on Youtube.. Once again.. THANK YOU.. keep up the good work.. God Bless..

    Ajay..

  • Hi, just got my score last friday, September 10,2010. R-24,L27, S27,W27 total of 105. I just watched your videos and used the phrases and templates you provided in your website. It was my first attempt to take the exam and my preparation was only 2 weeks. I'm happy that i got a high score. Thanks a lot Joseph. You're example and explanation are pretty accurate. Keep up the good work.

  • Thank you for your uploading ^_^ !

  • hi...hope4tofel..can told me what is us new rule for fpgee test taker?and why cant take until oct?

  • Hello, just got my score. R25,L23,S26 yes :) but W21 because of question no.1. I missed the second point from the lecture and had to guess but badly. Is it worth asking for rescoring eventhough I don't think I will get W24?? Won't be able to take TOEFL anywhere except US new rule for FPGEE test takers :( so not taking the test until Oct 2010. I need help!

  • @hope4toefl Congratulations on the 26 in speaking. Well, it's hard to say. I've had students jump 3 points on rescoring and others fall 2 points down. It's tricky and expensive. If you honestly feel that you deserve a higher score because you followed strategy and wrote accurate and well expressed content, then yes. Otherwise, a better investment might be to try again with a continued focus on speaking and an extra focus on writing question 1. Good luck and let me know if I can help.

  • @NoteFulldotcom Still struggling with my score ... Writing got better (25) .... speaking remains 24 :( but I'm more determined to pass. The secret is practice practice practice... the more I leave practicing the harder it gets. What to do?

  • Comment removed

  • And the structure of reading is quite different. in addition, the sample answers provided in the book are different. questions seem much more difficult to mee. for example it asks me to summarize the lecture in the way that it refers to reading passage. i dont understand, plz explain me , how do i overcome this :D

  • Excuse me to say this, but now as i watch this video, im little confused, and it would be awesome if someone gives me some clarification on this. Im studying to toefl from Barron's toefl ibt, and the practice tests , im talking about writing integrated task, is in completely different structure than it is presented in here. not always the lecture opposes the reading.

  • While I was practicing my writing, I already noticed the trend that for some odd reason, the lecture will always refute whatever it is in the reading passage. But the organization gets a little muddled up for me.

  • However after seeing this video, it helps me organize my writing much better,, allowing me o focus more on the listening part which is the most important part when it comes to tackling this question. Indeed, the grid format helped me so much that I have on average 7 minutes left to improve upon it, check out for grammatical errors and other such matters at my leisure.

And the tips for the conclusion is golden: I don't need to conclude! XD

  • you're the best. thanks

  • great video very helpful : )

  • Great!

  • Wow~ @@

    finally more videos!!!!

I was waiting so bad. Thank you so much!! I like it a lot!
