I have one of the ICF-5900W radios... it was a Cadillac of the era. The only thing not working well on mine is the S-meter... it sits at about halfway and doesn't move much in either direction.
I notice that you have an external wire antenna as well as the rod pulled up. An external antenna really makes a difference in sensitivity.
Gotcha... it looked like a ANT and GND wire. My popup antenna works, but it's missing the battery cover. Those are the 2 things that almost always are messed up when you run across one of the old beasts.
@mnpd007 Ah! Found this video again after a couple of years. I fixed my 5900W's meter by replacing it. The replacement isn't exact, but it works. The old Sony ICF-5900W was/is as good of an AM/Shortwave receiver ever made. The new stuff may have bells and whistles that the old Sony doesn't, but the proof is in the sound and reception and the Sony can't be beat there. The old receiver also works fine with only the rod antenna.... that is remarkable in itself.
This is one of my favorite radios. Their SSB reception seems to have become less stable over time. I think this Sony is close to the Panasonic RF-2200 on MW, and at least as good on SW.
Love it! I used to have one, but sold it. Stupid me!

Hi.
Question about the jacks on the side. what dimentions are they? 3,5mm?
One of them is obviously an headphonejack but what are the others? AUX input?

Thank you for this video!
I got rid of my RF-2200 thinking it wasn't working and still miss it. I was looking at this as replacement.

Hi my S-meter is OK on AM/SW but sits at full scale on FM.
That wire you noticed is not an external antenna. I was using the AC adapter and a phono cable to feed the audio to the camcorder.

I broke the telescoping antenna many years ago, and I fixed it by soldering but it would be nice to get a replacement.

I found mine in a pawn shop a few years ago... paid $99 for it. I understand the new price was about $250.00 on 1970's currency.
