  • Dude , that really helps , thanks a lot :)

  • My problem is that my skates feel great when I'm walking on them... But when I start skating, a strong 'strain' type pain starts on the outside of my left foot where my little toe is... Following rearward towards the back... All on the left side of the foot. As soon as I get off the ice... The pain goes away. Starts back up as soon as I start skating again. Right foot is fine. Any ideas?

  • @emenentia That's a tough one. It could be the arch of your foot doesn't match your skate. Or it could be that your skate is pushing against your foot, or against a nerve. But since this definitely has something to do with you leaning forward as it only happens on the ice, it's possible the toe box in your skate is too narrow. Maybe one foot is larger than the other, or just that one foot is more sensitive to pressure that's applied it. I don't know.

  • @emenentia Try on your friend's skates that have the same size but a different manufacturer or model, and see if you get the same pain.

  • Can someone help me? Whenever i tie my skates, after like an hour i get a tinteling/prickeling in my left foot like it's sleeping.. This lasts for about 2 days. Is this the cause of bad skates or something?

  • @DatGlekkie ) You could have poor circulation of blood in your left foot. 2) Your skates could be too tight. 3) You may have nerve damage and the skate is pushing against a nerve. 4) You could have a high arch and the skate is applying too much pressure on the bottom of your foot. 5) You could have the wrong width of skates 6) Your skate just fits your foot really badly, in which case, you'll need to try another model of skates or another hockey skate manufacturer.

  • @DatGlekkie Lace bite. Is it maybe too tight right on the top of your ankle? It's happened to me before. Try to make sure your foot is stabilized but not so tight it's mashing on the top of your ankle.

  • Great its on my favs definetly

  • I Lost Blood Circulation To My Foot/Ankle And It Fell Off Whilst Skating.....

  • @McCredzz Stem Cell therapy is the newest biggest thing.

  • i have bauer x40 and i dont use the top eyelid, is that normal

  • @2braappin Yes, hockey players tend to do that.

  • @2braappin i do that to

  • im planning on getting reebok 7k's, do you find that the pump feature helps in tightning skates because that is one of the main reasons i'm getting these skates because i have a lot trouble tightning my skates and the pump feature along with the lace lock seems like it might help, i'm asking because you're using the 9k's so i was just wondering if this actually makes a significant change in helping you tighten your skates, that area is usually where i find its hard to tighten, around the ankles

  • @tmlrlz Yes.

  • Thanks. My dad does skates the same way. So tough. I always try it but always fail. I have the motivation to try again. I'm going skating with a buddy tomorrow and daddy won't be there. He's a great inspiration in my hockey life. <3

  • @mizeri4life108 kool.

  • Hey Thanks for the video:)

  • @MultiSLipknot4ever ok no problem.

  • Thanks for the video dude!

  • Thanks dude for the video, It helped:)!

  • damm he likes it tight lol

  • @realkef Yeah but the Xtreme Ice Skating i'm currently developing now will make it so that you don't have to make it that tight.

  • you hvae to watch out not to pull the eyes out of your skates.

  • i think my toes are going to pop

  • @austinwwe619 Ha, don't go crazy.

  • Sometimes when i tie my skates i use a skte tightener cause it hurts my hands. Im wondering if you can get a ancle support cause my ancles bend alot.

need some canadian tire twist skates but too much money.

  • @kirbyswnd I never heard of supplemental ankle support system that works with ice-skates.

  • im afraid my foots gonna fall off lol

  • @checkeraka47 Don't worry, you can always reattach it with tape.

  • oh man my laces are too short to tie them arround, and at the icerink is so fking cold outside i cant feel my fingers cnt do that :D

  • I see. I found through my small amount of experience that tucking the skate under shin pads gives beginners all the ankle support they need if they are playing hockey. I'm assuming that most of the viewers of this video play.

Tucking still creates the problem of little to no forward flex which can make skating even harder, for me at least.

  • @KruNae I really made this video for Xtreme Ice Skaters. Hockey players seem to have their own way of doing things, even when it comes down to skating itself. But I made this video for the sport of Xtreme Ice Skating, to be honest.

  • @Prolite Well whoever ends up watching, I'm sure it'll have a positive influence.

  • @KruNae Appreciate it.

  • Great video. I didnt know half of those techniques. Now, ill probably be able to skate 5 mph faster than i already skate, i cant stress how much speed is important in ice hockey... Thank you!!!

  • i have a question i have regular laces on my skates now so could i just coat them in wax?? Would that work? please respond

  • @themusic928 I would suggest buying waxed laces. It would be easier.

  • @themusic928 Lmao you're cheap

  • that's why you have those buckles at the middle of the boot. They allows you to loose tie the upper boot, without letting the lace becoming loose in the rest of the boot.

plus tyiing the back of your boot may damage it. the boot has not been conceived for that.

good vid though for the other points.

I think the tying of the boot is an important part of the skating technique, as you'll skate differently, depending on your tying

  • @raffi98 If tieing around the back destroys the boot, than why are hockey companies making terrible skates? Why is a 700 dollar skate made out of cheap plastic from China? I'm not actually asking these questions, I'm just making statements. I'm creating a new product that fulfills the needs that hockey companies refuse to.

  • @Prolite

i'm sorry, i'm not sure i'm getting your point. For example what do you mean by "terrible skate"?

I think a 700 dollar skate is still in the top of prices you can find, and i would not estimate it's a good price to pay for a fairly good pair of skates. At the half price you can get a pair probably far more than half performant.

but for the best skates i think the main cost is for labor. A skate may overcome quite important tensions and must be properly built...

  • @raffi98 I explain all of this in a video called, "Xtreme Ice Skating - Hockey skates". the video was made maybe 2-3 years ago. Not only did I have problems with hockey skates breaking and having no support, but many other Xtreme Ice Skaters did as well. Therefore, as a result and a way to address a need to participants of our sport, I'm creating a totally new type of ice-skate called the Xtreme Ice Skate which will provide the durability need for the sport.

  • @Prolite

i ve seen some of your vids

i ve seen you modified skate, i would say that if your tightening so hard your upper boot it will inevitably create a lever which wil bend the middle boot and maybe break it. Try it once without lacing the upper at all, to see whats going on.

other things: i don't very well understand what your style is made on, but what is important is to effectively use the edges (4) of your blade. your initiative is interesting.

  • @raffi98 Thumbs up. The bend in the middle of the skate you mention happened to me when I tried this. I had LESS support by tying it so tight up top and a much hardly time controling my outside edge.

I've been trying a double lace through the 6th eyelit and the top losse. Seems to be working for my bender ankles.

  • @KruNae I don't use hockey skates any more so there's no need for me to tie my skates this tight or wrap around.

  • Actually your vid is only half true

the lower foot must be tied very tight to avoid energy loss, TRUE

But the upper foot actually doesnt need to be tied to skate. look at speed skates boots.

so the upper boot is just a protection. Plus if you want to be able to skate fast you absolutely need to lean forward and to bend the knees (up to 90degrees). For these reasons you must not tie the upper boot too tight. You must keep the ability to bend your knees while keeping your entire blade on the ice.

  • @raffi98 Hockey skates are not built with any durability or proper support, especially for Xtreme Ice Skating or any form of artistic skating, so therefore, they must be tied tightly at the top.

  • @Prolite And to that point, even IF hockey skates were tied tightly at the top, that's not a permanent solution. The solution is Xtreme Ice Skates, a new type of ice-skate that will be on the market next year.

  • Tieing your skate lace around ur ankle is stupid if you play hockey because the stick and always get though the laces on the back of your skate and you can fuck your ankle up pretty bad ( had it happen to me ) i always tie it like he does but tuck the laces into the side of my skates so nothing like that happens again

  • @SAKIC19OVECHKIN8 Hockey players have their own way of doing things. I'm not a hockey player.

  • @Prolite its cool man im just saying this is a good way if you dont go out on the ice against other teams.. But this way can ruin the back of the skate from the lace's

  • @SAKIC19OVECHKIN8 Than hockey manufacturers need to step up their game and actually create a skate that isn't worth 40 dollars in China. They're all made of plastic. That's the whole reason why I'm creating my own ice-skate; to solve these problems.

  • The way he tightened those skates your feet would turn purple in minutes, and a loos of blood flow. Those skates were frikkin tight! But like the video says at the end it's about personal preference. As long as the lower eyelet flaps on either side of the boot are closed over your foot then your lower laces are becoming tight. Don;t forget some hockey skates can be lightly baked in your oven to form to your foot, so follow the directions on the box that comes with your new skates.

  • @cragmac1000 LOL "turn purple". I've had worst than that buddy. :)

  • @Prolite , great videos on skating footwork and practice it really does help me a lot, and I will go and try some waxed laces now that you suggested it here; makes sense to me. The skate eyelets get that surface tension from the wax that is lacking in just cloth.

  • @cragmac1000 Thanks for your comment.

  • thanks for the advice, helped alot in skating cheers

  • this helped soo much thanx

  • @cameronxdxpxdxp Very welcome.

  • kk how would i stop the aching tho?

  • @myers246 Bring your skates to a pro shop and tell them you want your skates widened at the location where you put your foot into the boot. Your foot is receiving poor blood circulation because your skate is causing that. This is causing the aching feeling. Your blood vessels are being blocked. You need to slightly customize your skates by stretching out the ankle area. Just because this happens on the right, doesn't mean it will happen on the left.

  • Hi,

I have been ice skating for about two months and decided to buy my own pair of skates. I have Nike Bauer Flexlite 14 ice skates and have had them now for about 3 weeks. When I skate in them, I'm Ok for about 20 minutes, but then the inside of my right foot starts to ache, really bad. It gets so bad that I can do about 2 laps of the ice rink and then have to stop for a good 5 minutes. How can I prevent this from happening? I really enjoy skating and don't want to stop because of the aching.

  • @myers246 This happens because your blood flow is being cut off to your foot. If you have poor blood circulation, this will worsen the pain. If the arch on your skate is too high, this may cause this problem. If you have thick socks and tie your skates tight, it could cause this. If you have a wide foot and your skate is too narrow, it could cause this. Generally, blood flow is cut off at the ankle or heel. The heel or ankle in your skate is probably too narrow.

  • That's kinda what I was thinking, but man ... you're right, very tough! Thanks so much for your help and tips, they helped me out a ton! Amazing is all I can say for your skating, you have a remarkable talent. I look forward to more!

  • How do you tuck the laces? I just started playing hockey and everyone says to tuck them, but I don't know how or what do do........ I don't have enough lace to around the boot again.

  • @linemanlocal9 Any leftover lace you tuck them in front. You weave the lace under and over and under the laces in front of your boot. It might be kind of hard to do because your laces will probably be tight, but if you tuck them at the region by your toe, you should have an easier time.

  • for someone starting out iceskating what ice skates would u recommend?

i want the reebok 9k but dont no if there any good?

    get bk asap :)

  • @myers246 Reebok 9k are expensive. If you can afford them, than they are ok, but go for medium price if you can. Any hockey skate is fine except for Mission and Graf. Graf boots are not stiff.

  • @Prolite they dont make mission anymore, bauer bought them out last year ;(

  • @heckybank08 You can still buy them. Supplies haven't run out yet for retailers.

  • augg i cnt tie my skates i get so fusterated

  • I have a problem with my skate such that my right ankle kind of leans inward (only the right skate) making the skate blade protrude out to the right at a little bit of an angle when i'm on the ice. What would make this happen? This happens on two different pairs of skates, both on the right skate.

  • @chuckred21 It sounds like your joints and bones on your right side have grown differently than your left. My legs and knees are naturally buck-eyed which means my feet tilt inward. But both of my feet do this, not just one. Only a physician can give you better insight.

  • @chuckred21 omg. Everyone i skate with has that problem too including me. if you figure out how to get rid of this, please, please let me know

  • @Atarien6 Everyone can't have growth problems with their legs, so this leads me to believe that the sharpening is not level. Take your skates to someone else or make sure they sharpen your skates level. And you do this by turning your blades upside down with the blades facing up, and resting a quarter on your blade and make sure the quarter sits perfectly level and is not titled. An uneven sharpening will cause your skate(s) to veer off in a particular direction.

  • @Atarien6 If the quarter sitting on your blades is titled, than the person sharpening your skates has not sharpened them level.

  • @chuckred21 Are you getting your skates sharpened at the same place? If this person keeps screwing up your blades by sharpening them incorrectly, this cause be the problem. If the edge on your right skate is not perfectly level, you will notice a tipping motion.

  • Can someone please help me, I don't know how to tie my skates! I've been trying and practicing for quite some time now. Send me a message or reply to this comment if you'd be kind enough to help.

  • I have flat feet, I find that I need to have the middle section looser than the top part, do you think this could affect the power transfer to the ice?

If I make it too tight in the middle, I can barely skate w/o pain.

  • Firstly, you should tighten your skates so that you're able to enjoy yourself. If the only way to avoid pain is to loosen your skates, than that is what you must do. You will lose power even though your skates are tight at top and bottom, but it's not a big deal. Just find the happy medium.

  • Get some superfeet insoles (the yellow ones). I have flat feet and have lower slightly tight, middle snug but not tight and upper tight.

  • thanks quite helpful!

  • This vid helped a lot. But damn it takes long! :)

  • I have Reebok 5k. My laces are +-125". At the end I can't wrap around the boot (like 5:32) The lace is too short. Can I skip one vertical hole pair to make laces longer at the end?

  • Better off buying new laces that are longer . Laces are affordable.

  • you should never wrap your laces around it can break the back support on them

  • Hockey skates are not made for durability. They're made out of plastic and they break. Xtreme Ice Skates are meant for Xtreme Ice Skating and will be available sometime in middle to late 2010. It's an all leather boot and will have the XIS brand logo on it.

  • great job! thanks

  • Dan what song is that at the beginning? I really liked your video really helped me out.

  • Dan - I notice now you have a custom made boot with Reebok hockey blade. You used to use Reebok 9Ks? Would you recommend Reebok 9K for someone starting out? I have noticed from some reviews that Reeboks are not listed as high as CCM, Bauer, Graf. Would you comment?

  • The custom made boot is assembled to the hockey blade holder which the customer sends in. For me, I had Reebok 9k's at the time so that's what was used in regards to the blade holder. For someone starting out in Xtreme Ice Skating, I would not recommend Reebok 9k's as they are too expensive. For hockey, that's not my sport so I can't comment. I hear Bauer "Vapors" are the most popular brand right now because of comfort, look, and how they ride.

  • Ive been skating and playing hockey for 20 years and i cant see for the life of me how you can tie them so tight at the top!? How does your ankle move??

You cant lean forward into your stride properly if its tight to the top.

I only tighten the foot part of my skate then lace the ankle but leave it loose.

Im open to suggestion on aything that might improve my technique as i'll benefit, but this would stand me bolt upright on the ice. Please reply Prolite.

  • This video was really directed at Xtreme Ice Skaters. I can help you with your skating but you would have to ask more specific questions.

  • @hail2technoviking

i think it absolutely belongs to the skater....i used to tie my skates just like the video shows over years and now i tie it quite loose at the top and leave a hole free!

it just depends on your personal taste if you tie your skates tight as it is shown in the video or if you tie it quite loose.

Just test different types of tieing your skates and look how it works an if it feels good !

  • @SileX406coup Also, to include that not everyone is an Xtreme Ice Skater. Hockey players and figure skaters tighten their skates accordingly to the demands of their sport. Obviously this video is for Xtreme Ice Skaters.

  • @hail2technoviking agreed

  • @hail2technoviking I think his method is more intended for use on Xtreme ice skates and for Xtreme moves, they require more ankle support.

  • @hail2technoviking Haha I tie it relly tightly at the top right on my ankle I always need it EXTREMELY tight which is why I'm watching this video because I have trouble tying as tightly as I want.

  • thnk u so much this video really helped me

  • is this the reason why i did bad ice skating yesterday because i didnt tighten my skate and it was so uncomfortable now my foot hurts lol ...imma try again tomorrow this alot of help

  • i've seen so many people without tight skates and they do very fine? how you explain that?

[i tight my skates same as you, and its the best i guess.]

  • Easy, they are not Xtreme Ice Skaters.

  • great video! thanks for the advice

  • cn i just ask dan, how do u know whether ur laces have been waxed? thx

  • Usually, if you don't ask for waxed laces, you won't get them because they're more expensive than non-waxed laces.

  • I hate looping my laces around my ankle like that, it tightens up my ankles too much

  • 5:53

What do you mean by that

did you make a five minute video on tight skates only to say that they are uncomfortable at the end or am i missing something

    please respond

  • I skate with tight skates, which also hurt my feet slightly. But some people can't adjust to pain at all, so I was addressing a concern. Granted the wording could have been put together a little differently for the video.

  • okay thank you

because i just used your technique yesterday and they were as comfortable as ever before

thank you, you have just showed one more kid how to tie his skates =D

  • i like to think that the skate is an extention of my leg, it makes this easier to explain, a loose skate is like a broken ankle

  • nice guide.

  • i did get now my baur flexlite 1.0 its not the best too , but thx for post this video!:D

  • Thank you so so much for posting this!

    My skates feel so comfortable!

    xD

  • What are waxed laces... do u like wax em or something?

  • You guy them that way.

  • sorry... guy who?

  • I meant to say "buy". You get buy that way. You buy them waxed. You have to ask for them at your local pro shop.

  • @Prolite Can you just put some wax on not waxed laces. Say applying wax from candle.

  • Could always be fun to try lol.

  • " You got them that way" :)

  • I'd like to see you skate in my custom One95's if they were tied up that tight. The 9K is a soft skate. Skate lacing is personal preference. I find that tight up to the top few eyelets, then a little looser works for me. Many pros don't even lace the top eyelet. I prefer to just leave the top ones a little loose. You still get the energy transfer, but don't lose any mobility.

  • I don't use hockey skates any more. I use an Xtreme Ice Skate, which unfortunately isn't on the market yet. It's made entirely of leather. Even One 95's are a soft skate. If you're just a hockey skater than you might disagree, but you'll know what I'm talking about if you're an Xtreme Ice Skater.

  • Good Vid, i get my skates tomorrow not the best but...Nike Bauer Supreme ONE05

  • do you lace your skate in to out hrough ya eyelet or out to in??

  • no idea.

  • do you lace your skates down through the eyelet or up through it. which is better for tightning?

  • up through it, and I reckon you can try both.

  • its not good to tie ur lace around ur ankle you can break your ankle i play hockey and i need alot of space around my ankle

  • This video is NOT for hockey players. This video is intended for Xtreme Ice Skaters. Secondly, one can not break their ankle from extra ankle support. That is a ludicrous statement.

  • okk...

you can really break your ankle if ur a pro skater like you you wont but if ur not a good skater you could get injured

  • Thank you, but I have not received any complaints yet.

  • lol kk

  • i know people who do play hockey and the tie around the ankle

but i dont believe you play hockey giannitodaro because if you have loose skates that hurts your ankles the tigher the better it is for your ankles .

    prolite amazing videos man:)

  • thanks.

  • I think what he meant is that, when u tie around your ankle, you're actually supporting it too much. So if you have a weak ankle, then it wont develop

  • Dan, i'm about to buy a Rbk skates. Well i had a flat arches problem and a lot of people recommends Rbk.

When you still using Rbk skates, were you using the pump? Do you have heel slip problem with it?

  • I don't use hockey skates any more but when I was using the Rbk, I had a problem with heel slip. All hockey skates are like this though, at least for me.

  • Thanks for the video you showed me some intressting things like then double knot, for me the main problem is that i always lose tension in the previous 2 between every time i tighten a new pair got any tips about that? and i ALWAYS have to retighten my laces every now and then while skating, the thing i think is most importaint is that i have a tight upper skate becuse otherwise it hurts my foot to much is it effective to just tighten the upper part really hard and average at the low part? thx

  • You have to see what works best by trial and error. This video was just for some sense of general direction when tying your skates.

  • yeah i guess :) thanks for the video! got any good tips for tying your skates hard when your hands are wet, i tried that once... and my skin just peeled of... hurt like crap totaly not worth it haha :)

  • i don't understand what you are trying to do.

  • tie my skates while hands are wet after been skating for a while

  • Use lace hook or bring a towel.

  • is it something you can find in any sportstore a lace hook?

  • A lot of pro shops have them. Check your local pro shops inside the ice arena. Some pro shops don't have them, so you'll have to call before you leave.

  • its not good if ur skates are rlly rlly tight it just need to be tight

  • I hear what you are saying. Most people's definition of tight, to me, is actually loose. Therefore, tightness needs to be over emphasized, especially since the sport requires a tight boot.

  • will this work with rollerblade

  • hey well this work for roller blades

  • Aren´t you cutting of the the bloodtransportation if you are lacing that hard at top of foot?

And how about leaving the top eyelets out to get at good "sit" which allows long strides?

  • If you're cutting off your blood supply, than loosen your skates. It's that easy. We don't do long strides in Xtreme Ice Skating. This video is for the sport of Xtreme Ice Skating. So the answer is, no; the top eyelets should be laced.

  • can I do this with hockey roller blades?

  • Dude..i wot a question..i dont tight my skate shoes because i dont know why actually but i personally use them loose on the laces..that coulb be a problem or something?? i alredy tried a lot of stops and i put do it very well like the dime stop etc...i dont feel pain or something and i dont have any bone broken(not yet) its ok if i use them not tight?? If i have a bad english pardon me..im learning ;)

  • As tight as possible, or as much as you can take before pain.

  • if i went tightly from bottom through the top, i cant hv a good deep knee bend. and my foot feels cramped bcoz it cuts the blood flow. i wonder if this sport needs a good deep knee bend and needed a tight lacing.

  • Tighten skates as much as possible without pain.

  • i am trying to buy my own my own pair of ice skates for figure skating instead of using the disgusting plastic rentals. Does anyone know where to buy some cheap but reliable skates? An online store maybe

  • You have to determine what brand of figure skates you want first. Than you can search around for retailers that sell the cheapest boots.

  • Just got my own skates, some CCMs and i was struggling with the laces but now i've watch your vid, its help alot,

    Cheers!

  • i have that lilttle lock thing on my skates to Is it any good to use?

  • I never used it. Maybe someone else will comment.

  • I noticed that you have a pair of RBK 9K pumps last years edition.

I was just wondering if you like the skates and if you would recommend this years edition to someone who has found a great deal on them at $299 american with only minor blemishes

They have white and black ones (black being normal).

Please recommend one this is a great deal should I buy a pair.

  • No. I would not recommend any hockey skates for the sport of Xtreme Ice Skating. Xtreme ice-skates should be available by this summer I am hoping.

  • what do I do if my laces are too short.

  • Buy longer laces.

  • can u get red, blue and yellow 9ks?

  • no.

  • Since everyone else is asking you questions, i will too.. My left skate always slightly leans inward, and when i skate you can hear that its slightly shaving the ice because of it and im waisting energy.. Is this because my skates are not tight enough around my ankle and allowing it to roll inwards or because my ankle is just weak/wrong technique? I have stealth s7's if it means anything..

  • Make a video of what you're trying to explain.

  • Hmm ill try and explain it better.. Basically its like my arch is collapsing and even just gliding on the ice with both skates straight, the left seems to be skating more on the inside edge.. If i was a figure skater they would probably move the blade more inward to give my foot more support except i dont think i can do that with my skates/i dont trust anybody that lives near me to do it..

  • For something like this, you're going to have to make a video. There are too many variables involved with
