You know, I really like this guy's music, and the couple of albums of his that I have, the first one & 'Terra Incognita' are top notch and very individual...I know he's dead now, but WHAT DRUGS WAS THIS GUY FUCKED UP ON when all these videos were made?...Heroin?...Meth?...Combinations?...He looks like death.
@frankdialogue he wasnt a druggie. he didnt produce his videos. he was an artist however and a poet. nothing wrong with his videos either far as i can tell.
got up and needed to hear this, cracked a beer, lit a smoke, had a damn good cry looked at my dusty ole guitar. its been so long already but its a awesome day to feel the hearts this tune reaches out to. Cheers to everyone on this wonderful day.
Five hundred years from now, if there is anyone left capable of caring about anything that matters, Chris Whitley will be revered as the giant he was. R.I.P., Chris. You are missed, every day.

To all the people moaning about tuning: stick to Pro-Tooled, digitally 'corrected' crap, you'll be much happier. You'll be completely soulless, but happier. The rest of us, who know the difference between music and market positioning, will stick to this.
gophertele, I know what you're saying, but speaking as a musician who has played Nationals have you ever tried to tune a vintage National in a lower tuning? And then keep it in tune during a performance where it can go out of tune after one song? Speaking of which, I would LOVE to see the rest of this session. Chris truly did take the reso to the next level.
"out of tune" you are missing the point. People can take an empty beer can and make music. Chris had the gift of making art. I would listen (and you did) to that clip. I hear the art in it. worry about in tune whene you are tring to impress your friends.
You happen to be hearing a take where he didn't have the tuning completely under control...does that take away from the song itself? I never got to see him live but have been told Chris was quite embarrassed about his vintage Nats going out of tune during a show. Believe me, he was 100% aware if something was out of tune. You can't always stop in the middle of a song and tune your guitar when you're playing live.
Obviously you are not familiar with the use of alternate tunings. Maybe you should stick to traditional folk, you know the easy to get your head around stuff you were taught in nursery school
I've got a totally sweet VHS that has a ton of his videos, interviews, live stuff. ton of stuff that's not on YOUTUBE but I have no way of transferring it to digital.
You don't wonder if that twang contributes to the overall ghostliness of the song? Me, I think the form is fitting the content perfectly in this case. Prior to seeing this I would have told you that only Hendrix (and maybe Zappa, although in only in a postmodern sense) could pull off an entire song with his guitar sounding this way. Chris's might even be better, since Hendrix more or less faked it when out of tune; whereas, again I say,it seems to work here aesthetically whether intended or no.
I think i'm finally going to get a resonator guitar for myself after seeing these clips. the tone is just unbelievable. and you're right about Chris making it work.. great video (synced or not) thanks for posting it.
Pretty amazing!

Chris is using the last version of the National Style O. Probably 1940 or 1941. Tone's in his hands. A true giant.

Man this is way out of tune. I understand soul & him being sick but dam. "I Go Evil" is still one of his best.
watchforfree34 2 years ago
I know everyone loves him and stuff but that is SO OUT OF TUNE!
You may now insert you "Hey man the tuning doesn't matter, it's the soul, man!"
You still gotta tune yer damn instrument.
