as student in New York I had heard that Mr. Shumsky was a great violinist so I ask his son if he would play something for me. His son said sure, just go ask him.So I went up to him as he came in to a rehearsal out of the cold winter snow to conduct an orchestral string group and meekly asked him if he would play something for me.He said 'sure' then he took of his thick winter coat and hat and tore into some virtuoso violin solos that I could not believe I was looking at close up.with no warm-up
I have missed SO much by only now discovering Oscar on youtube. My mother studied with him at Peabody in the late 30's early 40s, and I saw Oscar in San Francisco. My mother never misses an interpretation, a testament to the great Oscar Shumsky, the teacher.. And I grew up listening to this stuff, how lucky I am.
Unbelievable violin playing - note perfect (or near as dammit) with easy inflection and lilt as though it was a simple walz. And a quicker and less obtrusive staccato than even Michael Rabin. Thanks for posting.
