I'm willing to bet you are mistaking Blythes with Ball Jointed dolls.

Both are expensive yes, but I think only very rare limited edition blythes may get that high up, BJD on the other hand--- well let's just say with 500$ sometimes you can only get a head-- and the cheapest cheapest smallest full doll you can get it's arpound 100$

Also their body is bound by elastic, so yes, their body will come apart if, say, the elastic breaks, but re-stringing them is easy ^^

My daughter loves them too, and if it wasn't for her hardworking 40 year old mommy with a bank account, she wouldn't be able to purchase them. I'm sure the Blythe doll manufacturers don't discriminate against age either. Those of us in the working world keep them in business so you can indulge. \m/
