  • Great job. Really enjoyed it.

  • nice shanty boys

  • I sing in two choirs, one is A Capella, so I can appreciate the difficulty of this piece. I googled it because my community choir is working on an arrangement of this. Great job guys!

  • Really nice job, guys.

  • Very nicely done! I love the original version by Stan Rogers, and these guys do it very well.

  • Thank you! This, I agree, sends chills all over; it's a striking and beautiful rendition of one of Stan's best songs. I wish I could get a copy of this version for my mp3 player. Wonderful.

  • Great job guys! You sound terrific with one of the all time favorites! Nice rendition!

  • great work guys!

  • great job boys, you do great justice to a Canadian classic, thanks

  • Wow! That was simply amazing.

  • YES!!!!! This is amazing. Fabulous arrangement, and very well sung. Bravo, and thanks so much for posting this gem.

  • I can't believe how well you guys sang this song. WOW!

  • This is excellent

  • great job! you guys sounded great and it is a tribute to the late Stan Rogers. it is a testament to one of Canada's best song writers. i liked your interpretation and arrangement of the song. Vocally, a song much more challenging than what it may appear, you guys made it look easy! a very moving rendition.

  • these virgin's did an awesome job.

  • cudnie po prostu cudnie....dziękuje chłopaki....

  • good stuff, men. very good stuff.

  • wow. I just found this song about an hour ago, and this version is giving me chills. huge props, fellas

  • Perhaps Canada's greatest song, done to perfection by a great choir! Stan would be proud! Well done!

  • YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!!!

Thanks for singing this beautiful song in such powerful way! :) :) :)

  • Great stuff.

  • I'm often disappointed by covers, too, but this one is grand! There are great original harmonies and real power and emotion in their delivery....superb guys, keep it up!

  • I love it!!! Amazing!!

  • You guys are amazing, absolutely amazing. I keep coming back and listening again and again and every time I am blown away. Well done!

  • Wow, guys. great work. I don't tend to care much for Stan Rogers covers as it's hard to beat the original, but this is beautiful. I really like the last run through the chorus.

  • It's different but I like it!

  • i googled but couldnt find anywhere. where is etodori high school?

  • wow. this is really, really good!

  • Glad to hear that Canadian classics haven't been forgotten. Hope you're all still singing.

  • They deserved a standing avation - it was a superb performance. Well done guys! Harmonies were brilliant!

  • Jean Paul Sartre said that novels are how the intellectuals of one culture communicate with another culture.

I think the same is true with music. All these guys understand this song!

  • moving. thanks.

  • It's kind of funny that it's a bunch of Asians singing about Canadian history :P

    Very well done though.

  • YAH JAY R!!!! Its Josh from the BC boys choir by the way ;)

  • **hairs on back of neck do stuff**

Good work, chaps. Damn good work.

  • Excellent job guys, I LOVED the arrangement, very well done, it was different from Stan's, but he would be proud none the less :)

  • Very Nice.

  • very good but do they have to move so much

  • Great! These guys are really impressing.

  • gave me chills!

  • Very Well Done !!

  • thanks guys

    all most make one cry

  • My family and I LOVE your school's rendition above all others. Your harmonies are fabulous. Whatever it takes, keep your video on Youtube, please.

  • This is our family's favourite NWP interpretation: BRAVO, GENTLEMEN!!!!

  • Beautiful song, splendid performance!

  • I like it. It may not be the best I've ever heard, but it's a shanty, right? :)

It is too high, but still very nice to listen, good work!

  • Nice to hear some humility

  • This was awesome! THe harmony in the chorus is amazing!

  • Well done indeed, must have taken a lot of practice for such a tricky song.

  • This is just amazing. Thank you so much for posting this. It truly almost made me cry.

  • omfg i know mr araujo

  • Fantastic. Have you cut a CD?

  • Oh wow! I am finishing one of my last papers for a History Honours degree, and its on the northwest passage. I took a break while deciding whether to hyphenate 'northwest' or not, and while browsing the web i saw this video and was swept away with emotion by your singing. Keep it up!

  • Until you've heard the song at STANFEST, you've never heard it

  • GREAT JOB! Lots of heart and soul.

  • The chorus absolutely sends chills down my spine. Beautiful singing, well done, guys.

  • BRAVO CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP LOVED IT 5 stars, it really is worth ten stars. keep on singing and thank you.

  • n13tzsch3 ... I respect you have an opinion, and certainly respect your appreciation for Stan Rogers, a true Canadian treasure. However, watch the beginning of this again ... there is emotion, and balance of both tone and pronunciation. This is a difficult song for an experienced choir, let alone an amateur student group. Well done guys!!

  • @davemja just watched you version of Northwest Passage ...wonderful harmonies thank you

  • Why the hell can't they do this sort of thing in English schools?

  • a HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR??? Wow, fellas! I'm a new Australian fan. I'm going to send this to the music snobs in my family. Extraordinary!

  • awesome version of the song.

  • That was awesome!

  • AMAZING!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • Does this group have a cd? I would love to have a recording by these very talented guys!

  • Awesome, guys. Don't listen to the haters.

  • You guys rock! Jerrperez, ignore anyone who speaks ill of your choir. I have been in music for quite some time and your choir is one of the best high school choirs I have ever heard (even better than most university choirs as well). I hope all of you continue to sing, even if you choose something else for a career. You're all very talented.

  • Thank you very much. Take it easy!

  • To XOOXMiley, I have watched your school's performance and I left a comment a few months ago, which I saw had been removed. Your choir sounds good, but there was no emotion. This song is, like skiy936 said, testosterone driven. Your performance sounded way too top heavy. I understand you performed it how your director told you to, but the his or her interpretation was a bit odd. Too much emphasis on pronunciation. You should listen to Stan Rogers version. He's the one who wrote the song. Cheers.

  • This is MAGNIFICENT!!! It's the best version on youtube. I don't know where these young men are from, but they do a terrific job. It's a great song and they do a wonderful job of it. My favorite is still George Cavanaugh's (with the Browne Sisters) but that isn't on youtube. This is great! Thank you.

  • The Chamber choir men for an inner city school in British Columbia's East Vancouver, St. Patrick's Regional Secondary. I'm the lad second to the right. The song brought a sense of joy to all of us. We're happy we shared it with all of you.

  • Correction! I'm third from the right =)

  • Marvellous rendition!!! LOVE the full-blooded, full-bodied harmonies of your talented group. Why not make an album of folk songs? The only "weak" aspect of the piece was the unison singing - it didn't quite "work" in this piece for some reason.

  • C G C F a

  • It's great to hear male voices singing a male song. Of course, it's "testosterone-driven", do your detractors listen to the lyrics? Keep working on the blending and you're there.

  • i love your video you look graet too

  • where is this song sang i love this song

  • where is this singing from i love this song

  • Any CD compilation of Stan Rogers' Greatest Hits will contain this masterpiece of folk music. Stan was one of the greatest modern folk composers in any country - his brother, Garnett Rogers isn't bad either!!

  • I love this song, and this rendition has POWER from the opening.

    Bravo.

  • How Awesome ! Beautiful and Sad Song. Well done fellas !

As a child, I enjoyed my father belting this song out to me before bed every night for a period of time. He'd have Stan Rogers singing backup. In addition, he'd shared with me the story that inspired the song.

That created some memorable times growing up ! Thanks for the memories !

How serendipitous ! I went looking for this song on U-tube tonight, exactly 2 years from the day you sang this.

Great job ~ Thanks for the classic nostalgia.

  • Absolutely wonderful. I am sending this to a friend who teaches high school vocal music and is in charge of the Concert Choir in a high school. Who knows, he might put it in a program full of Bach and Handel

  • excellent

  • Excellent interpretation of this beautiful and haunting song.Stan Rogers would be proud.Well done guys!!

  • briliant. i love this song in my language. in english it is also beatifull. and this singing.. i like it.

  • Bloody Brilliant, bloody brilliant. Good job mates.

  • you guys blend so well, good job :p

  • They did so good! I'm in Concert Choir at St Pat's!

  • That was the first time that a school choir has given me goosebumps. Awesome. Thanks.

  • This was absolutely beautiful. Thank you!

  • well done, well done.

  • If you want to put down this choir and this school, please do it on your own time and in your own mind. It's rude and unattractive.

  • @andshegotaway fuck you guys who did this this is disrespect and you will be brought up on charges for this

  • @andshegotaway These guys did a very different performance than anyone I have ever heard, but that isn't a bad thing at all. This is my favorite Stan Rogers tune, and one of my top five songs of all time. These gentlemen did a wonderful job that sent chills up my spine. Thank you for posting. :)

  • By saying that "this school sucks ass" you are directly attacking the school itself and not the choir that is to be appreciated for their effort.

Don't be angry that viewers responded to your first comment negatively. If they didn't like your version, they didn't like it. People have their preferences and you have yours. If you want to put down this choir and this school, please do it on your own time and in your own mind. It's rude and unattractive.

  • Hey, XOOXMiley, I appreciate your school spirit, but you're not doing Traf any favors by trashing this particular choir. A little good sportsmanship and politeness on your part might show Traf in a better light!:)

  • I gotta say after listening to your version I find this one much better. No offense though.

  • O/k I did what you said & I'm sorry the performance was poor, the begining solo was appalling, the song was probably not suitable for your school (I am not a sexist, never have been & never will be) but this song is testosorone driven. I have been running folk clubs & folk festivals for 36 years so I do have a feel for the music.

  • ya i heard urs.. its not as good.

    this one was amazing honestly

its good to be proud and all, but to put urself b4 some other people who are accually better is just something for someone like i to laugh at.

    :)

    ur skwl sucks.

    :)

    AMAZING JOB BOYS.

    YOU HAVE SUCH TALENT.

    xo

  • Probobly you think that it is better because, well, it is your school. Bit of a biased opinion.

Your school did do a good rendition of the song, but I must say, they seemed to be more focused on pronunciation then they were on feeling.

And skipy936 is pretty much correct, this song is testosterone driven.

  • BRAVO!

  • Such a Kick-ass version of this song. They really do it justice!

  • wow, good chords

  • good job

  • Very nice, blokes.

  • Nice Job Lads!

  • Good work guys

  • I KNEW I RECODNISED TONY!!!! lol omgosh!! haha

good job guys. =) (we were better though)

    amazing song is it not?

  • Fine job, guys.

  • wow guys great job...

  • Wow you guys did an amazing job. I was just wondering (I couldn't help noticing) that nearly all the people in chamber choir are of Asian descent. Is this a coincidence? Don't worry about it if you think it's out of line, great job.

  • around 80% of the school is filipino. XD

  • lol that's awesome. I'm from Juneau so yeah, Filipinos rock. Good video again.

  • Very Well done fellas, VERY WELL DONE !!!

  • My father used to sing this song (Among many other good ol folkie tunes) to my little brother and I as we were going to sleep.

sounds great to hear this again, sends chills throuhg my spine

  • its not a folk tune

  • well, not like OLD homeland folk or anything but, I would still call it folk music because it is non-electrical and tells a semi-historical narrative.

What genre would you place Stan Roger's music under?

  • why is this not a folk tune? I'ts covered by loads of folk artists and i have a version on a folk compilation i bought on CD.

  • it is a folk tune ... I don't know what that person was talking about stan rogers is a folk singer and he wrote the song ... therefore it would be a folk song.

  • yes it is stan rogers is a folk singer that's what he is described as and they have a folk festival in honour of him every year stan fest... check it out.

  • I have always heard his music refered to as Folk music.

But I know how you are BlackAdder6, my dad would sing such songs, except one that he sang a lot of was Barrets privateers. Always good to hear these songs again.

  • I would like to thank Pete seeger for the songbook "Rise Up Singing"

If any of you dont have it go out and get it. It has some of the best songs ever

  • its ncie to seeyoung ppl enjoying my uncles music i think hed be proud too

  • were is this school.

  • We're in the heart of Vancouver, B.C.

  • vancouver

  • Lovely harmonies, guys...well done!!

  • great job guys

  • what the hell is wrong with CHOW! hahaha..he keeps going from one side to the next, it's like he's gotta go pee, or like he's got ant's in his pants! hahahaha, but this recording is good, but we'll do better this year!

  • Excellent guys, I'm from Nova Scotia, about two hous drive from Canso, NS where StanFest takes place. I'm a huge Stan fan, and this was a great job of a great tune, good job sticking to the way it's supposed to be done! Cheers!

  • Great job guys. I'm a 30 year fan of Stan. He would have enjoyed your rendition.

  • Very impressive. Well done.

  • Fantastic, just fantastic!

    Skipy

  • Wow, very well done!

  • Found this while searching for a Due South Vid(the song appears at the very end of the last ep). This is an excellent performance, especially given the acoustics in what I guess is a school gym, and the fact that they had to borrow a cantor who seemed more of a 'folkie' than a chorister.

  • The cantor we borrowed was our conductor, Tony Araujo.

  • Ah. Thanks for the info.

  • Well done! That is my favourite Stan Rogers song! Those boys did great job and I definitely got goosebumps!

    Linda in Vancouver

  • Made my spine tingle. Very impressive. I really love this song and this was really well done!

  • wow

  • amazingly surprising

  • WOOO loved it i didnt think i would but i do

  • A wonderful job .. I love that song.

  • Incredible. Not what I expected but very moving.

  • if your saying they suck then lets hear you sing, if you say their good then cool. P.S if you say they suck go to hell

  • "Incredible...unexpected...moving" - That wasn't a negative comment. How could you possibly interpret Fewsandpiper's post as negative?? Your're one the member's of the choir here, xxxoheroxxxo?? I liked this video until you made that comment. Deleted from my favourites.

  • I don't even know who that is, but I'm a (female) member of the school's chamber choir too and I would like to apologize on his behalf (I am guessing it's a guy)for that obvious stupidity and naive interpretation of Fewsandpiper's comment. Thanks for watching (:

  • it wasn't someone from the choir, he's 21. lol

  • im one of the chamber choir singers in there

  • good job

  • I am a HUGE Stan Rogers fan, and I can't even believe how well they covered that song!

  • I never comment on vids but I had to break the habit. That was amazing. You made my day. Thankyou.

  • Wow! This is fantastic!!

  • Helt utan motstycke!

  • all i can say is---wow!

  • awesome job!! really a great song.

  • Oh Tony. :D Great job guys!

  • wow great job lads! so powerful with all those voices in that reverberant room!

  • Great Job guys!!

  • Very nice version! They do justice to this great song, to Stan Rogers, and to the explorers.

  • Wow! They're really talented! This is a beautiful song; one of my favorites.

  • Oh, that was brilliant!

  • we'd like to see more of these talented guys!

  • Thank you for sharing the video; these guys are great!
