They actually did a really bad job on the anime. The manga is way better.

not really, the ending was very faithful to the original, some of the side stories were moderately altered but they were used to give us a deeper understanding of the main characters anyway, so they have served their purpose. the anime adaptation was good enough as far as i am concerned.
