James Cagney was my ALL TIME CHILDHOOD HERO...and always will be. I started doing imitations of him when i was 4 years old and i was the life of every party ! Not so now, though i can do Cagney better. A ' TRUE' American treasure, along with Garland, Marilyn (no last name needed ! ), Gable, Bogart, James Stewart, John Wayne...we will NEVER see acting like his ever again....sadly...Thank God we can always watch his movies over and over with the greatest of all classics ' Yankee Doodle Dandy !'
I wrote him a letter when I was about fourteen along with my grandfather he made such an impression on me for some reason? of corse I never heard back but I just think he was soo great! They don't make em like that anymore!!
james cagney is my favorite actor of all time. got all of his movies on dvd...hard to find..my fav movies of his is angels with dirty faces..[rocky sullivan] he should of won a oscar for the role. roaring 20s...each dawn that i died....white heat..fighting69th...g-men strawberry blonde..the bride came c.o.d. ...yankee doodle dandy[oscar] BIG fan ..song &dance he said of himself...got his biography.....one of the best actors of the golden age of hollywood r.i.p. rocky
@kyokogodai Oh yeah, that's when Cagney was thirteen years older (in his mid-fifties) and shows that he still has all the moves that he had thirteen years previously in "Yankee Doodle Dandy". Also you see that Bob Hope could dance, which is also a surprise.
The world misses an actor like him..... Just bought White Heat on DVD, and is great.... As great as I don't think there is any other movie made by him.... Better than this. ;)
@madhamudeux: when comedians did impressions of Cagney, they always used that line, which he never really said. (Just like Bogart never said "Play it again, Sam.") And when they did impressions of Cary Grant, they always said the "Judy, Judy, Judy" line, and I rather doubt Grant ever said THAT either. (Famous example in an episode of Andy Griffith where Goober uses that line but doesn't sound at all like Cary Grant, lol!) So in this video clip, Cagney is referencing those impressions.
Cagney was a class act. Married to one woman for the rest of his life, private when outside of the spotlight, thoughtful and considered in his views... just a good man.
@crispiegee1 Amen! There aren't many men like him around anymore, let alone the Hollywood/celebrity type who are more interested in playing politics, and think because they're famous, they know more than the rest of us.
I remember the night this was on. I just finished Cagney by Cagney - again - and I read somewhere recently that the night of this honoring, there was the most incredible turn out of talent and real Hollywood that if someone had dropped a bomb on the building, there would be NO Hollywood left. What a night. God bless you, Mr. Cagney. How we miss you.
People used to impersonate Cary Grant by saying a line from the film, "Only Angels Have Wings." The character in the film was called Judith and he would say things to her like, "hello Judy" or "Come on Judy" but he never actually said, "Judy Judy Judy". I suppose it's a way to make fun of Grants dialect and his unusual and often funny way of speaking. James Cagney never actually said, "You Dirty Rat" They're just making fun of their popular personalities as expressed in a popular film.
I heard the "Judy judy judy" catchphrase is from Only Angels have Wings, where the Rita Hayworth character is named Judy, but he never says JudyJudyJudy in the movie
nah - "Judy, Judy, Judy was from a Cary Grant movie (not sure which)."
what Jimmy is referring to is the imitations that Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. would do during their shows - Frank would imitate Jimmy and say "You Dirty Rat," then Dean would do the same with Cary's "Judy, Judy, Judy" line
@supergreek that's what I said-Only Angels Have Wings *is* a Cary Grant film, not a Cagney film. And that is the movie which Grant was misquoted as saying "JudyJudyJudy!"
Thanks for this . . . I like to think I know my cultural references, and I usually wouldn't say 'thanks' in this situation, since it would mean admitting I didn't get it in the first place loll. But seriously, this is why there's a comments section, and I'm happy to fully understand this iconic Hollywood moment.
@drumuitar Exactly my friend lol. Cagney is such a crap actor he won an Oscar and left behind a very impressive body of work with many great performances. He could do it all drama and comedy as well as being a song and dance man. Truly one of the all time greats..
@Vicmarstar The lousy thing about boards is that they're clogged with 15 year olds that think they're cute when they trash subjects they nothing about. It's sad that Hollywood doesn't have anyone now that comes even close to Cagney...and this is the opinion of a 40 year old
@drumuitar Acting has evolved, Cagney was one of the greatest of his time, now there are others who are great, not better or worse, just different. You can't say he's better than De Niro, because they are just so different people in such a different time that they can't be compared. 20 year old boys can also say some true words from time to time.
@titoxungo acting hasn't "evolved." Either someone can act or they can't. I never said that you can't compare actors from different periods, and I wouldn't consider De Niro to be an actor of the current generation...as I would someone like Matt Damon or Leonardo DiCaprio, neither of which can hold a candle to Cagney

@MrGrevy Faceless punks hiding behind a computer like you should learn some manners and state your "opinion" without resorting to insulting people. But that's the type of disgraceful idiot you are. PS You dirty rat bastard! Lol.

Ok i need to get this straight, i happen to own he VHS of this award ceremony and watched it to make sur ei was right and i was.
Cagney was talking to Sinatra but made reference to Frank Gorshin with the punchline of 'Judy Judy Judy''.
Too many people are saying that he was taking the piss outta Sinatra well the joke references Gorshins impression of cagney as a misquote by poking fun at another of Gorhins famous impressions of Cary Grant (also a misquote) but he WAS talking to Sinatra
With apologies to Brando, this guy is the greatest American actor of all time. An ardent leftist who always spoke up for the underdog Cagney knew that America, despite its many problems, was the best hope for the "little guy". Contrast him with the confused drug addicts that now make movies. Rest in peace, tough guy.
Actually, while the "Judy,Judy,Judy" references Cary Grant, it, too, is a saying that was attributed (to Grant), but never actually uttered in a movie. In other words, just like "You dirty rat" was never actually said by Cagney.
Hey, don't get sucked into the curious little world of HarveyCartwright. He's a twisted little teenager eager for attention who scours the internet and leaves confrontational messages on videos for Hollywood A-Listers like Cagney, Grant, Stewart, Hepburn, etc, in order to engender the attention he has been deprived from birth.
He also uses the names ObamaRules4Ever and JohnRogersly.
Just a Heads Up for anybody who may be provoked into responding to the pointless little haemmorhoid.
Most probably the Frank he is referring to is the impressionest Frank Gorshin. He did a great James Cagney. You may remember him as the Riddler in the old Batman TV series.
What movie is it and who says: Yeah! See? I think he is a gangster or something and he says "yeah" and "see" a lot. Kinda like Kingpin from the COPS cartoon back in the 80's. I think that was taken off of who said it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I disagree. He did say You Dirty rat many times in his movies. I remember this well. I am certain. He screams "You Dirty Rat!" in the electric chair for sure. Also, I am certain that he mumbles it through the bandages as he drops onto his mommas doorstep for sure. I remember this.
James Cagney never actually said 'you dirty rat'. I have read several of biographies of him that agreed on that point. However in his movie Taxi, he says something to that effect, like 'you're a dirty rat'.
Basically, in the 1932 movie 'Taxi!' Cagney is misquoted as saying 'Come out and take it, you dirty rat...' when he actually said 'Come out and take it, you dirty, yellow-bellied rat..' he plays a joke, as Cary Grant was misquoted as having said 'Judy, Judy, Judy' when he didn't.
What do you mean by "thick"? Oh, I know, here I go again! Maybe I am "thick" because I am French...I'm not THAT familiar with Americanisims, you know (Marianne rolls eyes)
He didnt. A comedian and actor who was on the TV series F Troop, about the US calvary with the last name Stork. I forgot his first name. He did impressions on his stand up comic routines. He said that in his impression of Cary Grant.
i was joking. I replicated the joke that Cagney does in this clip. i am aware Cagney is doing the famous misquote that everyone does when impersonating Archibald Leach. so i said,in jest, maybe it was Grant that did the "dirty rat line from the 1930s film Taxi". i remember the scene and he is saying it to the man who killed his brother, "come out you yellow bellied rat, or i'll give it to you through the door. (i think he was in a closet)
If you watch any of the rat pack videos sammy did impressions and so did dean and very good ones too but frank always did cagney for all his impressions and sinatra was always known as frankie to other showbiz pals
As you can see in this clip: "JAMES CAGNEY AFI LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD" from tony4b Cagney was talking about Sinatra here. But he also mentioned Frank Gorshin in his speech.
James Cagney was my ALL TIME CHILDHOOD HERO...and always will be. I started doing imitations of him when i was 4 years old and i was the life of every party ! I remember watching this in 1974.
And I got the joke.

Can you let me know the reference to Judy? And who was Franky whom he was addressing to?
Thanks
zuzuspedals 3 years ago
Judy, Judy, Judy refers to a famous line uttered by Cary Grant in one of his movies, and that is who Cagney is imitating here.
fernmann7 3 years ago
As "You dirty rat" was a famous misquote, Jimmy mentions "Judy Judy Judy", which was another fanous misquote (attributed to Cary Grant).
And the Frankie is Frank Gorshin :)
prodigiesofpeace 3 years ago
Most probably the Frank he is referring to is the impressionest Frank Gorshin. He did a great James Cagney. You may remember him as the Riddler in the old Batman TV series.

most people nowadays wouldn't get the shear genius of that joke.

The Silent God of Horror Lon Chaney Sr. actually uttered the famous phrase "You dirty rat!" in the 1930 talkie remake of "The Unholy Three".
Jimmy Cagney played Lon Chaney in "Man of a Thousand Faces".

What movie is it and who says: Yeah! See? I think he is a gangster or something and he says "yeah" and "see" a lot. Kinda like Kingpin from the COPS cartoon back in the 80's. I think that was taken off of who said it.

This comment has received too many negative votes show

GarretMurtagh 3 years ago
There's also a clip on here somewhere were Cagney says "you dirty, double-crossing rat".
roberthoover 3 years ago
I just looked it up. The quote from Taxi is 'you dirty YELLOW-BELLIED rat'.

Cagney performing a cliche' with a cliche'

This doesn't usually happen to me but it really sounds like hes saying "G-O-D G-O-D G-O-D!"
and I was trying to figure out if that was somehow funny for the time or something. Judy, Judy, Judy makes a hell of a lot more sense.
BUnitLives 3 years ago
James Cagney was trying to impersonate Cary Grant, who talked similarly like that.
hawkssens 3 years ago
Judy Judy Judy is a line they say Cary Grant said in the movies. And he said he never said that.

Adderfilms1 3 years ago
What do you mean by "thick"? Oh, I know, here I go again! Maybe I am "thick" because I am French...I'm not THAT familiar with Americanisims, you know (Marianne rolls eyes)

What was the movie where Cary Grant was supposed to have said "Judy, Judy, Judy"?
weikko79 3 years ago
He didnt. A comedian and actor who was on the TV series F Troop, about the US calvary with the last name Stork. I forgot his first name. He did impressions on his stand up comic routines. He said that in his impression of Cary Grant.

Maybe it was Cary Grant who said "you dirty rat"
mp01juve 4 years ago
James said "Judy Judy" cause that's another 'wrongly attributed' quote, Cary Grant never said that, like James Cagney never said "You dirty rat"
Cary Grant never said it either, it comes from a film James Cagney was in where he said 'Come out and take it, you dirty, yellow-bellied rat..'
I love Frank Sinatra's impression of James Cagney :)
prodigiesofpeace 4 years ago 3
I know James is talking about Frank Gorshan in this video
prodigiesofpeace 4 years ago
i was joking. (i think he was in a closet)
mp01juve 4 years ago
this probably comes just in second place to the misquoted "play it again Sam" from casablanca

hes talkin about sinatra

no sorry philgoody..Jimmy is commenting on Frank Gorshin..not the other Frank..lol

oops sorry your right Ive seen another clip of this and he does say frank gorshin in that one

I love Frank Gorshin's impressions of Cagney

As you can see in this clip: "JAMES CAGNEY AFI LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD" from tony4b Cagney was talking about Sinatra here. But he also mentioned Frank Gorshin in his speech.
ANCITON 3 years ago
The next thing you know is Cary Grant claiming he said "Play it again, Sam" instead of "Judy, Judy, Judy".
