Hmm, haven't watch all of this episode but it really makes me respect Rory more because sometimes Amy and Doctor's attitude towards him is just to brush him off. He's really a greater person than that and can realize things that the other two may not consider because they're more mercurial and action-based.
There's a major difference between Rory having killed Amy, feeling responsible and waiting 1894 years for her to Amy's 36 years. Rory could have gone with the Doctor and not waited at all, would have just shown up and Amy WOULD have been fine, inside the Pandorica. But he CHOSE to stay because he felt responsible. And he was on a world he knew he could survive on. Whereas Amy was stranded for 36 years, being hunted by handbots, all the while knowing the Doctor had a machine that could save her.
@andyot7777 It's not fair to compare their waiting times because their circumstances were different.
Rory was on a world he knew he would definitely survive on because he knew what to avoid and when.
He could interact with other people. He could survive.
Amy was trapped in a strange world a minute after she got there and spent 36 years avoiding robots that would kill her, with no social interaction with ANYTHING for 36 years beyond a disarmed handbot, which couldn't talk nor comfort her.
I would point out that the big difference between Rory waiting 2000 years vs Amy waiting nearly 4 decades is the fact Amy had no hope in her that she would be with Rory...as Rory was waiting for the day that Amy would come out of the Pandorica.
Yes, Rory waited 2000 years, but he known that the doctor would be back, he known that he should waited it as like his " mission " . But amy, didn't know if the doctor would be back or not.. So it's different
I also think its strange that people find it weird that Amy wouldnt have mentioned baby Melody. I mean think about it. She never had the same parental bond that most mothers do have with their offspring. stolen from her only scant months after her birth, they then find out theyre already familiar with her as an 'adult' and THEN they discover shes been growing up 'with' them since their own childhood! maybe not disfunctional but def the most confused family (psycologically) in genre tv.
I imagine in universe the characters will have talked about it, we don't know what goes on in between episodes, or how much time has elapsed. They may have decided not to talk about it. It will definately get a referance this week though, Toby Whitehouse mentioned it at comic con.
I loved that bit with Rory commenting on how the Doctor was turning him into him, especially how afterwards Rory goes on to say ten's famous "I'm so so sorry" line. I thought that was a nice touch.
I've had enough of Rory and Amy. I feel like Amy has been written horribly this season. And as for Rory, I've had it with him. It started with the "permission to hug" crap and now his bitterness. We don't need the constant reassurance every ep that Amy and Rory love each other. Its bad enough River is her daughter, but no mention of her, or concern of her is ridiculous. Last series was so good, this series however, is lacking. And it makes me sad. I need more badass Amy and less Rory.
That was really great. A few days ago I was thinking about how Rose was becoming so much like The Doctor, but when I was thinking about it, I was considering all the good and powerful things about it. In your review you pointed out the concern of such a transformation and how it could very well be a bad thing. This has definitely added to my thought process, thank you.
I feel like my sister and I are the only people who didn't like this episode. I felt like it didn't make sense. I don't know. Maybe we're missing something. I just frustrated me a lot.
I don't really like Amy as the companion. I feel so much more of a connection with Rory. Every single episode (even from the beginning) I feel like the dynamic between the Doctor and Rory is so good, compared to Amy or River.
I think this episode was so good because the emotion with in it. I hate to say it but Doctor Who has been lacking something and I think that something may be emotion. But I loved this episode, it was a great idea. Rory felt like Amy would choose the Doctor over him for quite a long time and now it was his time to choose which wife. Not an easy decision.
I thought it was kind of ridiculous that after Let's Kill Hitler Melody/Mels/River wasn't mentioned once. After all this stuff happens to your daughter or your best friends' daughter/your possibly future wife, I would assume it would be mentioned. That kind of annoyed me. I was expecting some sort of clarification on the topic. In that respect, I sort of thought these episodes were quite irrelevant since it's all been sort of leading up to something and it's kind of taken a break from that.
@pythonfan001 I'm guessing they know that Amy and Rory "raised" her when she was Mel, so they know where she was the majority of the time. And now they are leaving river to "follow her own path"
I like the focus on the Rory and Amy relationship, but at the same time I would've loved to learn more about the world, the plague and the Kindness and the Appalappachians and everything, because that seemed really interesting too. Ah well, you can't have everything in an episode; they only have so much time.
I didn't like The Girl Who Waited, but I don't have a good reason. Everyone has really great reasons for liking it, so I'm beginning to think it has something to do with my attitude. I had just gotten back from seeing One Day. That movie devastated me. It ripped my heart out, and I wasn't expecting it at all. I think I was too sad and upset going into TGWW. Now I feel like I've missed out. Everyone feels so much better about the show, but I still can't stand it. Maybe if I rewatch it later...
@belleglass Thanks! Yes agreed. I just usually have better reasons, and I'm really jealous that other people are feeling relieved and happy with the series again. I miss loving it!
I think what Rory said at the end was so important. One of the questions stewing at the moment is whether or not traveling with the Doctor has been a good or a bad thing for the companions. It's something the Doctor has to come to terms with and I really want to see Matt Smith develop this doubtful side of the character. It was really powerful to have the Doctor consider whether or not it's fair to give his burden to anyone else (furthermore, is his burden really fair/worth it at all?).
I thought this Episode was sort of fantastic in the sense that it makes you see the doctor in a different light. Because he's so intent on having fun and having that feeling of mystery when he lands ina new timezone, he tends to put his companions in danger. The argument between rory and he, when rory tells him to check if a planet is under quarantine and the doctor says "thats not how i travel" was perfect. It also kind of shows how callous The Doctor is becoming.
Night Terrors was really a crap episode, but not as bad as The Black Spot bullcrap, this was much, much better, even if there were a few plot holes, it was a very good episode with great charaterization
I'm kind of annoyed when people say "Oh well Rory waited 2000 years and Amy only waited 36". Rory CHOSE to wait for Amy. He knew what he was getting in to. He WANTED to wait all that time. Amy, on the other hand, did not. It's not at all fair to Amy to compare the two situations.
I don't know....I'm kinda getting sick of Rory and Amy. I always enjoyed the dynamics between the Doctor and *one* companion. With the exception of Captain Jack being there I don't really like three people in the Tardis. I feel like too much emphasis is on Amy and Rorys relationship and I think there are enough shows on television which focus on romantic relationships/marriages. I know the premise is very different from these shows, but still. The mysterious universe is what I want to see in DW.
I think they might bring the idea of the quarantine planet into the last episode. Some sort of finale linking all of the episodes together similar to Good Man Goes to War. I'd like to know more about this planet, but I don't want any of my favourite characters to be sentenced to a life on it.
I can't help but notice all the waiting and forgetting with this new writer. I mean in Series 5, things were getting erased from time, and people were forgetting things. This series the first monsters you forgot you even saw them. Last series, young Amy waited for The Doctor all night, then 2 more years. Then Rory waited 2000 years for Amy. This series House made it seem like Rory had waited again. And now Last week episode where Amy waited again. Did anyone else noticed that?
I'm starting to think the Doctor should have a quarantine detector installed on the TARDIS. How many times has he unwittingly traveled to a planet under quarantine now? Gridlock... Silence in the Library...
Just a little random DRWho fact for you all, The girl who waited was written by a guy from Northampton, which is also where Matt Smith is from. Also there was a clip in an episode of Tom Baker's time that was filmed in the main theatre. Whereas it used to be shoe making, Dr Who has become the town's greatest 'claim to fame' and heck am I proud to live here :D
Rory knew he would be waiting almost indefintely and he had a purpose. He didn't have to become hard , for the most part, because he chose to wait and it was for a good reason. As far as Amy is concerned, she was basically abandoned.
another lovely review Rosianna, completely agree on everything. i liked the episode a lot more than some recent ones (namely all the ones based around river).
I really did love that Rory was going to let older amy in like saying love transcends time but Amy finally realised that that wouldn't be a good thing and that she would rather die and turn out how she would if rory was always there and she wants to be a better person and rory makes her that way (sorry if this sounds ranty my brain is hardly working lol)
I too loved the concept of the planet and that exchange between the Doctor and Rory. I also thought that bitterly realistic Amy was much more interesting than young Amy. But all of that is almost ruined by the incredibly weak foundations upon which the plot of the story was set: Rory wouldn't have let Amy choose the wrong button. That started the entire story, and I just didn't believe that that would happen.
On waiting: Rory chose to wait. Amy had to because Rory didn't specify which button.
I thought Night Terrors was a good episode, it was really scary, but was a bit let down by the fact that we didn't get to know where the boy had come from, who and why they put him there, and why the dad just accepted him anyway.
I agree that this was one of the best eps for a while, it was also nice to get off Earth for once in a while.
Rory walking around being directed by the Doctor made me think of Knightmare if you ever saw any of that. Something about the big magnifying glass did it I think.
Anyone notice that the doctor is really made to look like a dick in this series? Everyone seems to hate him at times and everything is always his fault. I love the doctor, why are they doing this to him?
@Brenders98 right but it's weird that they didn't even MENTION the fact that Rory spent an elapsed time waiting for Amy in an episode where Amy was waiting for Rory & the Doctor. The situations aren't the same, of course not, but it was like it never even happened.
@Al1981X i keep thinking that...there seems to have been no mourning time for melody even though at the end of a good man goes to war amy was distraught. I guess knowing that river song is alive is something, I loved both night terrors and the girl who waited though the end of TGWW was a bit long i thought.
I loved the idea that the tardis could sustain that level of paradox but i didn't quite believe it.
@littlelostnell well Amy and Rory mourned and obsessed over getting their daughter back all summer while the Doctor was off actually looking for Melody. They were so intent on getting back to the TARDIS to look that they created the crop circles. They then discovered that Melody had been with them all along.
@Al1981X LOL. What is going on in Amy and Rory's heads (or rather, the writers' heads), I have no idea. Something like "Welp, my infant child got kidnapped and is set to be probably neglected and brainwashed to try to kill one of my best friends, but it's cool, I'm not going to try to get my own child back or anything," apparently. I'm no expert on parenthood but I'd be fighting and screaming to get my daughter back...
I really didn't enjoy Night Terrors too much. Sure it was creepy and the kid played well, but it was a lot of repeated scared looks and heavy breathing rather than actual engaging plot. I dunno, at least in my opinion.
The Girl Who Waited, however, I found EXTREMELY compelling. I'm a sucker for the Amy and Rory relationship as well as when the Doctor's "dark side" comes up (in the sense that he makes mistakes and forces people to make terrible decisions or sacrifice something/themselves)
I loved the way the Doctor made the tough decision from the outset but the thing that struck me most was that the Doctor drew a very clear distinction between which Amy he chose. At least that's what I took from him implying he knew from the very beginning. I think the BEST part was Amy describing why she loved him. I don't think any companion in the newer episodes have come close to such depth when it comes to a relationship.
I found it interesting that they never brought up the fact that Rory waited 2,000 years for Amy, compared to Amy's 34 (36?) years. I mean, it was really hard for Amy, but it was just as hard for Rory, for much longer.
@wordsofjed I think it was because Amy's was in complete solitude it was more of a mental anguish. That coupled with the fact that she was seemingly abandoned and lost hope whereas Rory signed up for 2,000 years of service. That and he was was a robot. Robots are awesome.
@TARDIStacular Big difference. Rory waited because it was his choice. Amy waited because they left her waiting. Rory knew what was at stake. Amy definitely didn't. AND Amy was constantly attacked every single day for those 36 years. Rory was able to witness big historical events and be comforted by the thought of Amy. The two situations are incomparable.
@TARDIStacular I think it's because THAT Amy wouldn't have existed, where as Rory is still kind of the same Rory, as in he still has those memories somewhere inside. The point that older Amy was trying to make is not that she waited for so long, which of course compared to the amount of time that Rory waited is nothing; but to the fact that she wouldn't exist anymore, and all of those memories of her surviving would be gone.
@TARDIStacular But Rory chose to wait for Amy, and he knew why he was waiting. Imagine just being left with nothing, no clue of when you're going to be rescued, no idea of if you're even going to be rescued. I can see why Amy said that she hated the doctor, I'd be pretty pissed too if I was left alone for 36 years with nothing but my thoughts and some hand-bots.
I do agree, however, Rory's waiting was a choice that he made. He knew how long he would have to wait. However, Amy was waiting every day to be saved. She was told they were coming and every day was met with disappointment that they didn't arrive. If that makes any sort of sense?
@TARDIStacular on the contrary I thought it was just like Rory NOT to bring that up. He could easily have thrown that up to her when she was arguing with him (and note not once did he cast any aspersions on her of any kind)
@wordsofjed Rory chose to wait, knowing he'd see Amy again. Amy on the other hand was forced to survive on her own with a growing feeling of abandonment.
@wordsofjed I think it was harder for Amy because Rory chose to wait 2000 years and yes it was an extremely long time but he knew that at the end he would get Amy whereas Amy waited in continual hope for 36 years, thinking everyday that she would be saved and eventually losing hope as time wore on.
@wordsofjed THANK GOODNESS they didn't compare the wait times. The big difference is that Amy didn't choose to wait (she thought she was abandoned) whereas Rory did. Of course it was hard on him but at least he knew it was his choice and for someone he loved.
@wordsofjed p.s. sorry for the 943082 people replying to you telling you the same thing about the Rory/Amy wait times (even though it's true hehe). Definitely didn't scroll through the comments before I replied. What can I say, Whovians are a passionate bunch :)
@wordsofjed well thing is it was harder for Amy because when Rory waited for Amy he new one day she would come out of the pandorica but Amy didn't know for sure if the doctor was going to come back for her (so she's more like the girl who waited unknowing if all the waiting was going to pay)
@wordsofjed it probably has to do with the fact that Rory chose to wait for her, while Amy felt abandoned, plus Rory was immortal, Amy thought she would die there alone, while Rory knew from the doctor that it'd be okay in the future
@wordsofjed except Amy didn't choose to wait, she was left behind. She was made a promise that she would be rescued, & after 36 years of waiting with hope she finally lost it & turned bitter. She thought she had been abandoned & that nobody was going to get her. She was also on the brink of death EVERY SINGLE DAY. Hiding & surviving those kindness bots. Rory had a choice and the freedom to leave (taking the pandorica w/him) and he wasn't threatened by death constantly...so yea..Amy is justified
@wordsofjed You make a good point but lets not forget Amy is a woman so it doesn't matter what Rory went through or how long he waited what Amy went through will always be worse. Not trying to offend i just felt it was actually very realistic that way (going by my own experiences) Or you could write it off as the fact that continuity on doctor who has been more or less terrible since the William Hartnell days.

Also the macarana <3

@Al1981X I think it's been made fairly clear that Amy and Rory only care about their kid when it's convenient to the plot. XD

I do agree with Kayley, though: they could have explored the planet, its people, the whole background/context a lot more, even subtly.

Night Terrors reminded me of Paperhouse, as did Fear Her.

Also, Rule One: The Doctor lies.
go1711 5 months ago
I really didn't enjoy Night Terrors too much. Sure it was creepy and the kid played well, but it was a lot of repeated scared looks and heavy breathing rather than actual engaging plot. I dunno, at least in my opinion.
The Girl Who Waited, however, I found EXTREMELY compelling. I'm a sucker for the Amy and Rory relationship as well as when the Doctor's "dark side" comes up (in the sense that he makes mistakes and forces people to make terrible decisions or sacrifice something/themselves)
go1711 5 months ago

@wordsofjed Thats what i thought
DevonHomeBrew 5 months ago
@wordsofjed I think it was because Amy's was in complete solitude it was more of a mental anguish. That coupled with the fact that she was seemingly abandoned and lost hope whereas Rory signed up for 2,000 years of service. That and he was was a robot. Robots are awesome.
MrSirPopey 5 months ago
@MrSirPopey Rory wasn't a robot. He was organic plastic that was freed from control by the Nestene Consciousness. There's a difference. ...:P

@wordsofjed YES seriously odd that there was no reference to that at all. - Rosi
TARDIStacular 5 months ago 73
@TARDIStacular Big difference. Rory waited because it was his choice. Amy waited because they left her waiting. Rory knew what was at stake. Amy definitely didn't. AND Amy was constantly attacked every single day for those 36 years. Rory was able to witness big historical events and be comforted by the thought of Amy. The two situations are incomparable.

@TARDIStacular They seem to try to forget that Rory had to wait 2000 years, I can only remember one reference to him being the last Centurion.
Also waiting 2000 years in society living among people is preferable to 36 years of solitude, at least in my opinion.

@TARDIStacular I think it's because THAT Amy wouldn't have existed, where as Rory is still kind of the same Rory, as in he still has those memories somewhere inside. The point that older Amy was trying to make is not that she waited for so long, which of course compared to the amount of time that Rory waited is nothing; but to the fact that she wouldn't exist anymore, and all of those memories of her surviving would be gone.
phillymagic 5 months ago
@TARDIStacular But Rory chose to wait for Amy, and he knew why he was waiting. Imagine just being left with nothing, no clue of when you're going to be rescued, no idea of if you're even going to be rescued. I can see why Amy said that she hated the doctor, I'd be pretty pissed too if I was left alone for 36 years with nothing but my thoughts and some hand-bots.

@TARDIStacular @wordsofjed
I do agree, however, Rory's waiting was a choice that he made. He knew how long he would have to wait. However, Amy was waiting every day to be saved. She was told they were coming and every day was met with disappointment that they didn't arrive. If that makes any sort of sense?
NaiveWords 5 months ago
@TARDIStacular on the contrary I thought it was just like Rory NOT to bring that up. He could easily have thrown that up to her when she was arguing with him (and note not once did he cast any aspersions on her of any kind)
alienwizardling 5 months ago
@wordsofjed Rory chose to wait, knowing he'd see Amy again. Amy on the other hand was forced to survive on her own with a growing feeling of abandonment.

@wordsofjed I think it was harder for Amy because Rory chose to wait 2000 years and yes it was an extremely long time but he knew that at the end he would get Amy whereas Amy waited in continual hope for 36 years, thinking everyday that she would be saved and eventually losing hope as time wore on.
giraffemad830 5 months ago
@wordsofjed THANK GOODNESS they didn't compare the wait times. The big difference is that Amy didn't choose to wait (she thought she was abandoned) whereas Rory did. Of course it was hard on him but at least he knew it was his choice and for someone he loved.

@wordsofjed p.s. sorry for the 943082 people replying to you telling you the same thing about the Rory/Amy wait times (even though it's true hehe). Definitely didn't scroll through the comments before I replied. What can I say, Whovians are a passionate bunch :)
belleglass 5 months ago
@wordsofjed well thing is it was harder for Amy because when Rory waited for Amy he new one day she would come out of the pandorica but Amy didn't know for sure if the doctor was going to come back for her (so she's more like the girl who waited unknowing if all the waiting was going to pay)
mreawsomeman 5 months ago
@wordsofjed it probably has to do with the fact that Rory chose to wait for her, while Amy felt abandoned, plus Rory was immortal, Amy thought she would die there alone, while Rory knew from the doctor that it'd be okay in the future
alollapalooza 5 months ago
@wordsofjed All replies to this are valid points.
wordsofjed 5 months ago
@wordsofjed except Amy didn't choose to wait, she was left behind. She was made a promise that she would be rescued, & after 36 years of waiting with hope she finally lost it & turned bitter. She thought she had been abandoned & that nobody was going to get her. She was also on the brink of death EVERY SINGLE DAY. Hiding & surviving those kindness bots. Rory had a choice and the freedom to leave (taking the pandorica w/him) and he wasn't threatened by death constantly...so yea..Amy is justified
shiningstar08 5 months ago
@wordsofjed You make a good point but lets not forget Amy is a woman so it doesn't matter what Rory went through or how long he waited what Amy went through will always be worse. Not trying to offend i just felt it was actually very realistic that way (going by my own experiences) Or you could write it off as the fact that continuity on doctor who has been more or less terrible since the William Hartnell days.
tribetng 5 months ago
@wordsofjed The thing is, Rory chose to wait. Amy didn't really have a choice, but I'm not quite sure o.o
TheRojoJojo 5 months ago
@wordsofjed Ah, but Rory *chose* to wait 2000 years to protect Amy, whereas Amy expected to be recused by the Doctor and wasn't.
Antworkk 5 months ago
@wordsofjed I think the difference is that Rory chose to wait 2000 years whereas Amy waited the entire time to be rescued and felt more abandoned.

@wordsofjed, Wasn't that because time was rewritten after the pandorica went into the exploding sun?
EbonyHood 5 months ago
@EbonyHood That doesn't mean Rory doesn't remember, just because time was rewritten. Eye of the storm, and all.
