  • what kind of education do you need in order to be the person testing the kids about the concepts?

  • How is the definition of conservation imply any sort of conserving of energy (CONSERVATION)??????????

  • so adorable!!!

  • its so cool ! we just learened it in psychology class ! to see it its cool !

  • piagets stages are not perfect science, don't kid yourself.

These kids CAN understand these concepts, but they need to have them explained. For example, if the first lady poured the water back into the other cup and said "see, look, it is actually the same amount, isn't that cool?" than the little girl would've understood

its not that they are unable to comprehend the information, it is just that their brains use the most readily available information first (size and shape in most cases)

  • The second kid was impressive

  • I think it's fascinating at 0:49 how in her mind, she knows what's going on, but still struggles wording her thoughts coherently. The last little girl is so cute!

  • I think it is adorable that the last little girl said it was fair just because they both had two :) I wonder how old these children are, my 4 year old would never fall for that.... she is always telling me if my piece is bigger :)

  • lol the black kid has a more developed brain..ironic ._. atleast the last girl was adorable xD

  • It must be so frustrating to raise children.

  • Notice the first little girl's face light up when she sees the juice poured into the taller glass. It's as if see has seen a magic trick. It would be interesting to see this with positive reinforcement. For example telling her she was correct when she identified the two short glasses having equal amounts to see how, if at all, it influenced her response or reaction to the displacement in the taller glass. Also she should have asked the girl to try and make the 2 rows of quarters match.

  • She was so excited about those Graham Crackers. lol

  • politicians do this all the time.

  • This is cute and it gives me an idea next time I see my younger cousins. I would like to play this game with them and see what they think and see where their reasoning ability is. I don't think kids are stupid. Even adults were deceived into believing in CHANGE in 2008 HAHA.

  • did they get these kids from the special needs classes or something. far out

  • If you say "kids are retarded," just remember that you used to be a kid once. Does that make you retarded too?

  • Theirs just too young to understand or comprehend.. It's not that theyre retarded. Damn

  • The last girl, what a dumbass.

  • Hahaha, this is how credit card companies, corporations, businesses and so on trick you into giving them more money then they deserve.

  • Kids are retarded.

  • aww she is adorable :D

  • kids are retarded

  • if you don't understand how these children can't understand then maybe you should take some more psychology classes. their young brains CAN'T understand it! read more piaget please. every human goes through this, you just probably can't remember. they're still learning about the world, for all they know it's entirely possible for the tallness of the glass to indicate more water. it's why small children are into magic, because they believe in the magic. to them, magic is entirely possible

  • @obsidianroselace The black girl showed that this isn't true for all children though, she seemed to understand why one glass didn't necessarily have more in it than the other just because it was taller or wider.

  • @Ernestiqus I think she was older.

  • @obsidianroselace Well obviously not because the second girl said they were the same and she was right...

  • @obsidianroselace lol so what about the africian american child who clearly saw the difference? XD

  • @DAYTIME504 It's because she's older. It only take a year or two for a child to reach the next stage in operations. Check out Piaget's stages.

  • @TwiggehLeaf so why did they put two different age groups in the same video? and how can you even tell wat ages they are in the first place? why not show different videos for each stage of growth?

heres wat i think....all the girls in that video are the same age....and most people cant stand that children of color can actually develop faster so they want to say that the black child is much older XD

  • @DAYTIME504 They put different age groups for comparison. The second girl, in my opinion, is at least one year older based on her language development and lack of baby fat. I don't think it has anything to do with ethnicity.

  • @DAYTIME504 How does everything on Youtube always end up with people talking about race?

  • @obsidianroselace Well said! :-)

  • @obsidianroselace Good one :D

  • it's called autism you insensitive bastards

  • saw this in my psyc class. very interesting.

  • physcology brought me here thankyou!!! !!!

  • soooo cuteeeeeee!!!!~~~

  • FUCK PIAGET.. SAMUEL AND BRYANT FTW

  • @OiAbA Nah. Vygotsky all the way

  • the last part was so cute, but I felt so bad that she thought they were even and she was so happy.

  • What if you try to teach the kids the concept? Would they understand it? And would they use it in different situations?

  • @fuunguus The answer depends which theory you believe in. Piaget would argue no, because he believed that children were "little scientists", and have to learn themselves through interaction with the environment. On the other hand, Vygotsky's theory states that children are "apprentices", and that through "scaffolding", learning can be accelerated. There are many other theories (eg Nativism, Information Processing etc). But the answers are still largely unknown amongst the psychological community

  • I want to point out to you Jandj that you are sitting here commenting on how you think these kids are dumb which in itself makes you retarded because you are talking crap about little kids. I have a high intellect and so does my fiance but this is part of the development so for you to sit here on a computer and make comments of this nature about little kids makes you the stupid one anyway now I understand why i hate people like you so much

  • LMAO! Silly kids!

  • These kids are so silly, there is obviously the same amount of liquid in each glass. How can they not get it? It's so obvious! I can't believe it! Like, okay, so they poures the liquid into a taller glass- I'm 99% sure that that means it's still the same amount right? How can they not tell? They're so stupid! This is amazing, Ican't believe it! God!

  • @colbananana troll? or do you just refuse to even read the top comment?

  • @AllenQuatermain2de @AllenQuatermain2de Troll? We're not under a bridge are we? You're silly! You're so silly! These kids are goosie ganders! If I were to meet them, I'd say "Hey! Don't be so silly!" and give them a yogurt. And they'd say, "Oooh thank you mister! I enjoy yogurts but I can't understand this silly trick!" And I'd say, "You're silly, you're just so silly". And then we'd play tennis in our pyjama

  • @colbananana for all you know i could be under a bridge, and for all i know you could be. what makes you think we are not under a bridge? your so silly. even more silly then these silly kids

  • @AllenQuatermain2de Ha well played

  • @colbananana They are unable to understand the concept of conservation due to their brain not being mature enough to understand that even if there is a physical change, this does not mean that the content changes as well. You are able to understand the concept of conservation because of brain maturity. So don't call the children stupid because their brain has not yet developed enough to understand this.

  • @colbananana The white little girls is not older than 3 or 4 years, It's normal sometimes. Plus, they're americans, hahahah!

  • 0:16 The enthusiasm speaks for itself.

  • I don't ever remember a time where I was this retarded. BITCH YOU JUST SAID THEY WERE EQUAL. YOU JUST COUNTED THE QUARTERS FOR GOD SAKES!!

  • She is sooooooo cute. The last girl

  • HAHAHA this is soooo funny!

  • @People_who_say_these_kids_are_retarded_or_stupid: shut the fuck up because when you were their age, you were pre-operational and couldn't understand the concept of conservation. I swear, people these days are out of sight and out of mind. Ignorance is not bliss, it's just stupidity in its glory.

  • @pilgrimsdoll I watched it because my girlfriend is majoring in sociology or psychology.. whatever.. and she had to watch this video and told me to watch it, too, because apparently it was cute. But I agree with you that it was a waste of my time. And I'm wasting my time responding to you now, too, because I seem to be talking to Piaget himself and would lose the argument that babies are retarded...that is all.

  • The psychologists who propose cognitive development theories are primarily interested in one part of development: mental growth in areas like logic, learning, and memory. These theories emphasize the cognitive (mental) change and development of the mind. different age groups of kids just know more than younger ones because incorporating information about new but very similar experiences that fit into an existing mental structure is assimilation.

  • That little girl is adorable!!! I just learned about this in my psychology class and I just that it was so interesting. :)

  • @ExtensiveGamer Me,too :)

  • Some of you people especially kpacuBua need to go to school and take Developmental Psychology...this way u will see that "the black girl" is in the concrete operational stage according to scientist Jean Piaget..obviously some people on youtube are not developed enough yet to know that children learn at differnet rates and actually have to be taught these things they are not just going to KNOW!!..

  • pre-operational stage FTW

  • the black girl was the only one wrong - its pretty obvious that the taller glass had more in it. duh!!!

  • Kids are born stupid. It's up to us to teach them about the world... nah, jk XD

The kids are new to the world. They will learn more throughout the ages. I'm doing a college project on this. Tomorrow is my presentation and I have no freakin idea what to say :D

  • 2:08 i get that this is a developmental thing. i've been learning about it, but wouldn't it have at least made sense for her to count? :P either way, the one at the end is bringing up unpleasant memories for me haha. and i wonder why i hog all the snacks whenever i'm home.

  • greasy220 is stupid. lol.

  • what a stupid kid! lol!

  • LOL I find this so cute xD

  • News flash: There are some concepts that elude us no matter how old we are. How the brain functions is still a largely a mystery.

  • @LaLaLaJoe No I wasn't that retarded.. These babies are the stupidest retards I've ever seen.. And that's including your mom

  • Yeah but they should still know that you can't make stuff appear or disappear like magic.. So I can continue to say they're fucking retarded

  • @m1nn1ck1 the are not retarded the test is just proof that the AVERAGE kid at that age/period still can't understand the concept of conservation...the one kid who passed the test is older than the others that's why she can already evaluate...again this is true for AVERAGE kids...maybe you should read on this topic more before you judge...i mean when you were at that stage i bet you were the same not unless you are advance or a genius...w/c based on your comment i think you're not...no offense

  • OH MY GOD BABIES ARE SO FUCKING RETARDED.. Seriously, how stupid can they be?

  • @m1nn1ck1

you cannot said like that..this kid still in developmental stage... nobody know everything right after they're born..

  • @m1nn1ck1 you were probably retarded when you were their age too so shut up. They're still in pre-operational stage like you were you idiot

  • @m1nn1ck1 If you are not interested in or researching Piaget's Theory, why even bother to watch and waste time commenting???You sir are as ignorant as the innocent children...that is all.

  • @ amazingmazie I agree with you. Maybe they don't have children so they don't understand but even if they don't what kind of person calls a little child stupid? Hope they don't have kids! Maybe they were treated bad and called stupid as a child. sounds like they needs some counseling.

  • 1st kid was like omg magic how did she make that glass have more juice!?

2nd kid was like IM SUCH A FUCKING GENIUS RIGHT NOW

3rd KID bawww XD that was the silliest cutest thing ever !!

when I was lil they taught us that bigger doesnt mean more or better by making us choose christmas presents in boxes and the smaller boxes had better presents.

  • Video has done me justice ... Currently have to carry out an experiment like such for a uni assignment and werent too sure as to what object permanence and conversation task included. Helped a lot, thanks :)

  • USEFUL POST. THANKS

  • Thank you so much for this video!! It's really help me for the conservation's study in psychology.

  • LOL ang cute nung bata sa huli..! hahaha

  • nc 1 2 SED-1

  • ano 2sed-1 did you watch this? hahaha

  • this operation works on a trust system. even though the kid at the end sees that the number of quarters hasnt changed, when the woman asks which one has more she assumes one of them MUST have more. Thus the experimenter is ruining the result.

  • @motortube64 lolwut?

In every single question of every single experiment, they always ask, "Does this one have more _, does this one have more _, or are they the same?" It's obvious that "they are the same" is a perfectly valid answer.

They're not being tricked. Their brains just haven't developed enough to grasp the concept of conservation. You can try these experiments with any child in that age group. The result will be the same.

  • that last girl was soow cute ... hahaha we had to watch this at school and everyone was like ooowwww!!!!

  • haha thats amazing

  • it seems as though they are asking a biased question with their first question - "Do you think they're the same" and then the second question sounds like its pushing them to 'realize' in a way that they are not the same.

But nonetheless I have taken psychology and do know that this happened to all of us :)

  • i love green shirt little girl

  • omg the third girl counted to make sure they were the same AWWW

  • the last girl is sucha cutieeeeeee

  • all those kids are stupid except the girl in the pink with the juice test

  • @supermistery1 All those who post the opinion that all those kids are stupid are stupid. Yes, small children are stupid, it's called being a child. You would have made the same mistakes as these children did at the age these children are because you were stupid at that age. But then you developed an learnt.

  • If you zap the left hemisphere of their brains with ultra high magnetic bursts to disrupt the neurons something different happens.

  • If you have two characters, one a hippo, one a giraffe and say that they want to be fair so they divide the drink up equally. But the hippo can't reach the tall glass, and the giraffe can't reach the short glass easily, so they each pour their drink into a fair glass for them, then many children who previously 'fail' this test, now pass. "Which one has more" is a weird question when you're four. "Is it fair" makes more sense and children do better.

  • very interesting vid.

  • sooooooo cuteeeeeeeeee :D

  • um.. video info? date? or something? please...

  • @Ravisher125 Settle down, Hitler. And take a developmental psychology class.

@jenningh What video is this from? I want to see the whole thing.

  • i love kids in this stage of development!

  • @lilmissm026 cos you get to eat more coockies??

  • hahahahaha so cute, and it proves black kid > white kid, no I'm kidding

  • You people saying these children are stupid because they can't understand the concept are the real idiots. The children haven't passed the developmental stage yet in their life where they understand conservation. NONE OF YOU WERE BORN UNDERSTANDING THIS CONCEPT YOU HAD TO LEARN IT AT SOME POINT

  • @amazingmazie11 Actually kids can be a lot smarter than we think. If you introduce a character called 'naughty teddy' who moves the coins to confuse you and make you think it's more younger children often don''t make these mistakes. PART of the problem is the lack of context to the situation for the child.

  • @MTAllenby What does a "naughty teddy" have to do with context? The whole purpose of this video is to demonstrate that the children have not yet passed this stage of development. I'm not saying that there aren't small children who do understand this. It's just that most children don't because their brains haven't reached that stage yet. I never said the kids weren't smart. I was calling people like @Ravisher125 stupid.

  • @amazingmazie11 Sorry, I did not express myself very clearly. The comment I was making was in respect of the work of Margaret Donaldson. When she showed was that thinking doesn't just happen in children's brains, it has to do with social context. The idea of 'which has more' is highly abstract. So young children struggle. If you put the same problem in a social context then hidden abilities surface. I'm post more in another comment.

  • @amazingmazie11 BTW, like you I do despair at the number of posters who seem not to be aware that at the same age as these children they behaved in the same way. Immaturity is not the same as stupidity, and people like ravisher125 are being stupid or immature when they don't realise this. That is one of the problems with development, we forget the way we used to think.

  • @amazingmazie11 that's the point of the experiment...

  • @amazingmazie11 OMG im totally agree with u..those who are uneducated will not understand about children!!

  • @amazingmazie11 I'm sorry; I was not this retarded when I was little.

  • @Typhoon792 Actually, you were. Everyone was, but I suppose you think you're special and were born understanding the concept of conservation? Hmm? You just skipped the pre-operational stage as a child? Yeah, I didn't think so.

  • @amazingmazie11 Actually, this was proven wrong many times. If you don't want to trust me, that's fine. But this isn't proof of anything which is why I can only look at this as unintelligent kids. Stop projecting onto others and using this as fuel/defense just because you were dumb as a child - maybe still are.

  • @Typhoon792 lol ur not human then? Well ur clearly retarded now as u cant understand the simple prinicples of genetic epistemology.

  • @Dom20002007 Maybe I'm just a better human than you ever were, sad to say. Hard to imagine, I know, since you're such a perfect model. Once again, this has been disproved legitimately even though it's obvious regardless. But you go ahead and believe whatever you want to believe. Make yourself feel better. Reality isn't important right?

  • @Typhoon792 hmm who to believe...a number of scientists who have spent years researching this stuff or some random poorly educated person on facebook who thinks these children are unintelligent...i wonder...

  • @Typhoon792 so you're saying that you were born knowing how to conserve?

  • @jandj094 When I was born, I couldn't see, I couldn't move, I obviously couldn't speak, and I couldn't even fucking count. No shit I wasn't born with it. I'm talking about this age. And I just did this test with my 4-year-old little brother who is barely learning to read now and he got everything instantly right. I tried to trick him too.

Retarded kids - that is all.

  • @Typhoon792 Oh wow, call the press, your brother's a fucking genius! Maybe he is of a higher intelligence than the majority of the children in the world, or maybe the children in the video have lower intelligence than the majority of children in the world. We develop and learn at different rates. Don't take the piss.

  • Comment removed

  • @jandj094 Ok... So that was my point? People were making it seem like it's impossible to have any intelligence in this regard at that age. My point was that it was quite the contrary in my personal experience and with others that a), I saw as intelligent kids, or b) people that grew up to be on the intelligent side - or rather not ignorant fucks like most. We develop different things at different ages, sure, but in this case more likely those kids are just purely dumb and grow up to be so.

  • @Typhoon792 Okay i will let you just sulk about how you think these children are 'dumb' as you think it's nice to comment negative stuff on it. Also the psychologists didn't say that high intelligence at this age was impossible, that was the whole point of the experiment. Maybe you grew up on the 'intelligent side' so i'm guessing. Yet again, being closed minded at thinking children should know how to conserve at the age of 4. LOL.

  • @jandj094 I don't think children "SHOULD" be able to conserve at the age of 4. What bothers me is the generalization that all kids are like this and that's the way it is. My point was an exaggeration to say that there are kids more/less intelligent, and the more observant usually end up being smarter.

  • @Typhoon792 "All kids are like this and that's the way it is." Hmm if all kids are like this....wouldn't this be considered 'natural', and that these children aren't as dumb as you say they are.

  • @jandj094 What?... "What bothers me is the generalization that all kids are like this and that's the way it is." Do you not understand this statement? That's exactly what I'm arguing - that this isn't the case as this test/general theory is trying to demonstrate.

  • @Typhoon792 But they aren't generalizing all kids mate?

  • @jandj094 Well that's what this thing is about isn't it? And if they're not, then how is what I'm saying wrong - that the kids tested here are not of the highest intelligence relatively.

  • @Typhoon792 Well how about about you carry out an experiment with even more kids? It might get the results you're expecting :)

  • @jandj094 I did it with 5 kids the same age - 4. I pretty much guessed beforehand who it would work on and who it wouldn't.

  • @Typhoon792 Ah 5, what a big number. Bigger than 252 eh.

  • @jandj094 No, I'm just saying... Aaannyway. Yeah, the point was delivered here. Peace out.

  • @Typhoon792 Peace and Love.

  • awwww

  • next time do it with an Indian kid lol

  • @Freedawk u were like that before lol its normal!

  • @Freedawk hahaha

  • The kids can conserve, its just that they are asked the same question twice so they start thinking they were wrong the first time they answered.

  • Comment removed

  • these kids are still smarter than adults in mississippi

  • hmm what part of theory does that follow the second part right?

  • I love these experiments

  • I wonder if the conductors of this test attempted to teach the children operational skills before the test. These skills, being what they are, are not easily learned through observation and parents don't go out of their way to teach their children these things. Yet, if an attempt were made to teach them that, if a glass has a certain amount of liquid in it, that amount doesn't change when transferred to another glass, would they then be able to grasp the concept?

  • ahahahhaah she actually counted them,,thts cute

  • and we call ourselves intelligent...

  • dumb lil girl... I wish my girlfriend was that easy to fool!

  • SPED 2: mao jud ni atong assignment?

    cath

  • This is why half of the potato chip bag is pumped with air.

  • OH SHI-

  • Proof- White kids are stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • @poppins1978 Yeah because sampling 3 people is a statistically sound experiment.

  • how did the lady poor the juice from the big cup to the small cup without spilling it?

  • :-)

Couldn't it be that the younger kids just don't know what "more" really means? Say the 3rd kid, at first she was counting the number of coins but after the change she was referring to the space between the coins. For the biscuit test also, it could simply be that she has a limited conception of "fairness" (same number).

My point is that the issue observed in these experiments could as well be the question of "communication" rather than understanding "conservation".

  • @siamco My thoughts exactly. There's evidence to support your alternate theory, though I'm not sure there's more evidence supporting communication rather than conservation. It does leave a lot of room for thought, though. Excellent insight.

  • Rich people are also aware of this trick.

  • @Meshuggaaaahhhhh

Haha yes they are, and they use it every day on the working class.

  • god that chick is retarded

  • @jewfishie2 LOL shes like 4

  • @MintzTape yea, she is four and retarded

  • This is extremely interesting.

  • What a cute girl

  • Actually this is a psychological test based on Piaget's theory of cognitive development. So, theres nothing to do with a person's skin color or sex. Some people here have not been able to realise that, quite a pity, their brains are not matured enough.

Thankyou BLUETORCH - you wrote what i meant - only thing is - you didnt realise what i wrote and why. No, i was not drunk when i wrote my first comment. --- i was alarmed by the way so many people made poor comments seeing this video.

  • AHHHH

  • A lot of adults fail the conservation task, too. Did those stimulus checks Bush sent you a couple of years back really make you guys feel better?

  • just wondering if you could tell me the ages of the kids in your video??

    its for my psych class.

  • Fascinating

  • Does this explain why kids love big toys as opposed to smaller ones?

  • The kids that get the problems wrong will grow up to be Republicans.

  • @PathogensQuest - or they will say "to hell with politics" altogether! lol

  • @PathogensQuest

Gooooood ooooone!!! That was soooo witty...omg...did you make that up your self!!!
