Caution: Three Minute Warning is not for the musically faint-hearted, impatient, or critics of extreme self-indulgence. If you fall into any of these categories, you should stop listening this song.
I love the basis of this song. One guy started improvising and said "if you guys don't start jamming in three minutes I'm going" (hence the song's name).
... taking IMPROVISATIONAL playing into another ART FORM since JAZZ... only this is TECHNOLOGICALLY aided due to the MODERNITY of the instruments... but the MUSICIANS are still DEEPLY ROOTED in TRADITIONAL learning and playing!!!
@NecronChaos Also you can read the story for the name on WIkipedia. They called it three minute warning because the bassplayer wanted to improvise a song and Petrucci and Portnoy wanted to carefully write out the songs first. Then the bassplayer, Tony, said that if they didn't start improvising in 3 minutes he would go home. So thats why they did it that way:P
@ELBORRACHO86 Yep. Mike Portnoy explains everything on his website. He said that Tony wasn't interested in song writing, just wanted to jam, improvise and play. The rest of the band were busy writing and arranging and stuff, Tony got impatient and gave them 3 minutes to finish up whatever they were doing or else, he would leave the room. They put the song aside and started playing. Which is what you hear right now.

I noticed:
Mike Portney is leading the rythm section, and Tony Levin is just following suit.
Jordon Rudess is absolutely dominating melody and also leading rythm with Portney, a verychallenging thing to (being a pianist/keyboardist myself).
John Petrucci is adding side effects to fill in gaps of Jordan Rudess (Jordon doesn't have 3 hands)
