  • This breaks me up every time ... my elder sister was a trumpeter for our high school's brass band between 1979 & '83 ... and she had an outfit just like the gal in this vid' ... i'll have to show this vid' to her kids just to show how "trendy" she was back then. ;)

  • Excellent.

  • This is one band that back in day never got their just reward here in the America. I was drew to this band from the start and was probably one of the only people who owned this cassette tape back in my old school and I absolutely wore the thing out.

  • @TheTooz72: I was there, too! I have the 12 EP of this song. TSC did get airplay on US college stations, though, and commercial station KQAK in SF. Today, I hear this song once in a while as background music in supermarkets when I'm shopping! Oh well. I good song is a good song, and it doesn't matter where one hears it!

  • Weller and Rickenbacker...hell of a combo! Class.

  • @Shane55able sure is. Cheers.

  • 1984?

Bloody hell, am I really that old?

  • @whirlpoolzend yes we are : (

  • @inshreds66 Oh God, that is sad but true!

  • ive got the same wallpaper.

  • Paul was chewing gum

  • Mick Talbot's so sexy!!!!

  • @FredericaBimble ...and gay.

  • @ossopunk - Who cares? He's still sexy!

  • @FredericaBimble that's true. It doesn't matter. If you find him sexy, that's cool.

  • col vav an syl

  • @Flexstarz not that Random. that's Weller's ex wife Dee C Lee.

  • Looks like it was the summer saturday programme "No. 73"

  • @drstuf might be, but they usually played live in the living room on that i think (checkout my Bad Manners clip). The song title that pops up, looks like Swap Shop or Superstore.

  • @inshreds66 maybe but I do remember the stranglers playing in the basement once

  • @drstuf It was Saturday Superstore, 17/03/84

  • Love the Style Council and The Jam. Very different from each other though. It must have took some bottle at the time for Weller to change direction to the more relaxed Style Council vibe.

  • @CnutRexAnglorum yep, if you write songs and play in a band you soon get bored of the old tunes and your tastes change as you learn of other artists and records you never knew before. Then you want to impress and excite people like you now feel, so the urge to change comes into play. I imagine he would have been excited by doing something different and it would have given him a renewed inspiration. I sometimes wonder how some bands continue like they do, without change.

  • @inshreds66 - Very well said and so true.

  • @CnutRexAnglorum you can tell by the last The Jam's albums that Weller was moving to a much more soulful trend. In fact they played stuff by Wilson Pickett and Curtys Mayfield...

  • I never saw this video. I have the version of the bicycle riders and...

  • @cyprixx this isn't a video, this was a lip synch appearance on childrens Saturday morning tv in the UK.

  • Wellers good looking cat

  • I love the fact that Paul's trying to lip sync and chew gum at the same time. God, why didn't America give Paul Weller a chance? I guess because he was too cool for us.

  • Much thanks to wontoofreefore and you inshreds66 for posting these videos.

  • @Annamandabella my pleasure

  • my nephew "the whizz" can be found on my space musix for all!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love this song and love the Paul's Rickenbacker...thanks for the vid

  • nice music

  • which was first the jam or this? they are both good paul still excellent today

  • @phildirt3 The Jam was first.

  • I truly enjoy The Style Councils albums more than The Jams. I know I shouldn't compare the 2 though I must say from Sound Affects forward was more enjoyable than the earlier albums. Nothing against the punk but when Weller moved into the as Joe Strummer called it "fake soul boy" phase he put out some of the most infectious tunes of his long and varied career. Best solo song is from the recent 22 dreams "Did You Make Up Your Mind" is well......mind blowing.

  • Like the comment under the video, very true, love this.

  • @hayesy25 Cheers.

  • top of the range !!!!! collie vav

  • A radio station here (89.3 The Current Part of Minnesota Public Radio no less)played this the other day as I was driving to work. Later in the evening a coworker who is only like 19-20 mentioned they'd heard this great new song by a band they'd never heard of before, he was predicting they were going to be big. I asked what the band was called and then had a good laugh when I explained the song was about 25 years old, but complemented him on his taste in music.

  • @NeoGee like it !

  • look how young

  • Nice music.. i rate a 10.

  • Excellent music...love it.

  • Love it!!! Calmin music.

  • Although I love this song very much. But the video..................Ha Ha, the 2 girls of horn section were seems like dummy. were they really the musicians of the trumpet & sax??

  • Drummer kicks as too!

  • I think Paul has had his ears pinned back. I'd like to do mine too but only for aerodynamic reasons.

  • i would love to own the ricki backkie

  • That one, me too.

  • BREEZY COOL SOULFUL MOD POP!!!

  • just plain smooth

  • Reminds me of college. This song is timeless and still a favorite. Love The SC.

  • This is like smooth -Love the 80's

  • The more I listen to these guys, the more i love them! Why on earth they were so underrated????!!!!

They're in my pantheon of the very best....

  • They were underated because most people wanted more of The Jam, but as any musician knows, your tastes and influences change and you want to sound like your latest favourite records more than what you've done before and people didn't get the change at the time.

  • EVERCHANGING

  • One of my favorite songs.

  • PRETTY SONG. HELL YEAHHHHH.

  • One of the best songs I've EVER heard...

  • is he chewing gum? take that gum out of your mouth this second and see me after your performance on saturday superstore.

  • Cool song!

  • sorry love the jam the style council and paul weller but this video is shite were those two birds told to look straight at the camera?

  • Que fait cette brave dame accoudée au piano ?

  • Que?

  • I said : what does this good lady do, leaning at the piano ? (but I confess that my question is not of the utmost importance !). By the way, thanks for that video, the song and the performance are remarkable. And Paul Weller sings better than in the Jam years, it seems (I like his brave and generous voice, his lyricism, but there's a problem of accuracy on several records).

  • Her name is Dee C. Lee and at the time she was married to the lead singer and a backup singer on many of their hits.

  • Elle se trouvait être sa femme à l'époque...et accessoirement choriste dans le Style Council.....good taste guy !!

  • Of its time and transcendent at the same time.

  • My high school class just had our reunion from the graduating class of 1984 and I know every single girl would go nuts to see this, so damn cute....

  • Awesome.

  • Positively exciting from beginning to end. Great to drive to and to dance to. A must have for anyone's collection.

  • Oh no, the qualude girls on the horns again! They look like refugees from some religious cult, that haven't been deprogrammed yet.

  • the coolest people ever.

  • deb hanlon x u loved paul weller x

  • I love the early 80s...

  • ahhh, the 1980's. i defy u to find ANYTHING REMOTELY like this on pop radio now.

  • the tall girl on the sax looked like my x wife, she never smiled either,

  • So true this song, they had style they had class and great inventory music, timeless, British music what happened to you???

  • just the fucking bollocks isnt he!

  • LOL! I love English slang - Yes, He's got a bit of bollocks about him!!! I'm a Weller fan for ever!

  • You have good taste my man and Billy Childish too no less. Nice one!

  • Thanks! I noticed we have the same taste!

  • Hahaha... i had a pink shirt back in the 80's as well... love the Style council... Paul Weller continues to be the man!!!

  • Cool..summery song...

  • The Big Master Paul Weller!!

  • Thanks for posting this. Back in 1991, a bloke called Paul was a volunteer for Age Concern, driving a small bus to a field in Basingstoke with the older people in it for a church weekend, pouring out the tea, looking after people. Yes, it was Paul Weller. Not acting like a star. Being real, being kind and giving up his time for free. I chatted with him, without giving away that I knew who he was, and he was great. True star quality. What a brilliant man.

  • What a great story to hear. Cheers.

  • nice man! =)

  • I didnt know the blokes from Peep Show had a band.

  • what?

  • This guy reckons David Mitchell has been on the Atkins diet lately...

  • hahaa!

  • thank you..4 your reply..its all about the music..lets dance....

  • wtf is it with people..if someone looks good and dress well..they r gay..paul was never gay....he was gay friendly..what wrong with that???,he has made great records 4 over 30 years..and as a huge following and open mind..who didn't want sleep with him.....lots of girls and a few boys too...haha

  • "We got our own manifesto

Be kind to queers" - Strange Town - The Jam (1979)

  • i know you did hon..it was about the music..not who u wanted to fuck..that came later..

  • I agree! The weird thing about this so-called dress code is that no one thought this style was "gay" back then. This was not even close to that look and that look is still what one would see today and probly tomorrow. It would be nice if people just paid attention to their own lives and stop judging others.

  • Is Paul chewing gum at the start?

  • I guess he is, he does that a lot in clips I've seen.

  • I hope you brought enough for everybody, young man!

  • You made me smile....thank you.

  • Always puts me in a good mood.

  • Love this song, but the horn section doesn't look too convincing. :D

  • We did our best

  • Well if you're one of the 2 lasses then you looked damn nice trying. Cute

  • Fantastic song! Thanks PW! Even your clothes still look good!

  • Why couldn't MTV put this vid on instead of the awful bike race one??? I had this 45". Played it endlessly!

  • If the parka wearing mass (of which I was one in 1982) ever wanted to know exactly why PW ended The Jam then check this brilliance out. Y'all know dat's TRUE!

  • love him

  • This is one of my fav Weller tunes. Ta x

  • great song.. weller over his gay phase and getting it on with Dee

  • What do you mean gay phase? You mean style of dress, or (say it ain't so) Weller was into dudes for awhile?

  • Nice find. Thanks for posting. Yes, better than a bike race indeed.

  • luv it

  • Love this song

  • Better than a "bike race"!!!!

  • GIVE ME A BREAK

  • I suppose what I meant to say is that I prefer this video to the "bike race" video of the same song. The ability to witness the band playing the song.... Nice to see the whole band!

  • How rare is this? One of the best and one of my favorites. Thanks for the time.

  • Cheers.
