@hazmat151 not huge enough and not for long enough... contrast the Rolling Stones, or even Pink Floyd... both equally good in their own way, both far more known by the average man on the street today.
I heard this in the supermarket last night -- probably for the first time since not long after it first came out. I had forgotten about it. Anyone else hear Utopia/Todd Rundgren @ 2:46 - 3:06.
It's too bad that legendary act like these guys had to endure the visual-media-based onslaught that was the eighties and MTV. The asinine video productions were so freaking weird... so insulting to our intelligence, merely because a band was granted a "video budget" that they had no idea what to do with, because they just wanted to be MUSICIANS! Video indeed killed the radio star. I love the song. Love the Kinks.
@GVike I'm sure they did! Not sure how conscious they were about it but still... The amazing thing about the Ray and the Kinks is that they didn't sue like many have in similar situations. I'm a diehard Kinks fan but have a good degree of respect for Green Day, in part because they had the right influences. :)
@GVike They didn't, 'rip them off" persay, they were paying a homage. Billie showed recognition by admitting he was influenced by the kinks and this song.
yet again the best songs get overlooked for the latest new fad in the charts.the kinks are one of the best singer/song writing bands ever.and this song proves it . m

ahh the kinks did have great sense of humor and a suttleness of sarcasm ...also multilayerd lyrics which succed on many levels...what life is and how it should be ...the kinks were masters
Ah, what a rocking powerhouse of a song! One of those tunes that conjures up my lost adolescence in the 80's. It's a neglected classic -- I never hear/see this song in 80's retrospectives. Thank goodness for You Tube!
@marblewatcher You are so right! I remember loving this song when I was a teenager, but since it disappeared from reviews, stories and specials... It was great to find it again.
Is it me, or does Dave Davies rip up some serious guitar solos in this song?

The Kinks Rule! Ray Davies is my hero. Dave Davies not so bad either. From "State of Confusion" album I believe.
