  • When the fuck did this video become about some bum ass cymbals ?

  • Dave, is very obviously to me, the best of the jazz-latin players I have seen in my life! Never have I seen such amazing Samba music when there is something that is quite fast, and I love to see him just there in the moment, making his love for the instrument known. I do play, and have been told too I play very well, but Dave is the man insofar as I am concerned is the best. I have learned from many other drummers, but I have learned most from Dave Weckl - how much I don't know yet!

  • yes speed does... but Dave is awesome!!!

  • He is playing so fast that appears to be slow kkkkkkk :P

It is not slow,it is so fast to ahuahuahua

  • Падрачил спасиба

  • he plays mozabique !! and so on...

  • hihat on 2 and 4? hmmmm... I wonder why Weckl decided to do that...

  • @mrpercussive his taste.. Maybe the latin groove doesnt have that he can fuse it up however he wants now. lool

  • @cabsam32592

I could see that... i have a habit of putting it on 2 and 4 as well... makes the transition from songo stuff to second line a lot easier... but when i play with some real latin players, they're shaking their heads, hahaha... just need to leave it out when i do it with them. My body doesnt feel comfortable putting it on 1 and 3 or all 8ths yet...

Weckl is clean though... and yea, hella fusiony...

  • @mrpercussive Im no percussion player, but I am from Puerto Rico, so latin is tied to my blood jjajaja, and its not that its wrong or bad playing it on 2 and 4, its just that to us it doesnt feel like its "sabroso" (tasteful) and can get a bit annoying, because we improvise not thinking on 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, we mainly use the clave which feels better on 1 and 3. Anyway in the end you play like you feel it. Just wanted you to have a perspective from a latin player :)

  • @JACSjazz Hey thanks for that, nice to know as I'm slowly getting my head around various Latin rhythms....cumbia, cha-cha, bossa nova, rhumba, sambas, etc have been great to learn. But salsas and mambo's have always been a bit of a mystery to me as to how the percussionist follows it, so that as a drummer I can play it with a more authentic feel, instead of being the gringo I am LOL. (well, I'm not that gringo, I've got a mixed background, but no Latino in there I'm afraid!). Gracias amigo!

    G

  • @mrpercussive why?

  • @lmospina42

Because in latin, the feel is going to be based off 1 and 3 or all 8ths on the hi hat... seeing as this is a latin demonstration video i would expect that. But hell, Weckl is groovy regardless!!! XD

  • @mrpercussive why??, in drums you can do whatever you want if it sounds good. It is not like you should do that or the other, its about what you feel at the moment. In fact, if you can play a latin groove in a rock groove, DO IT...Watch mike portnoy, thomas lang, virgil donati, or Dave Weckl ;)

  • @lmospina42

totally get ya... i'm just saying it's funny if he's that he's demonstrating latin with a hihat on 2 and 4. Of course you can do anything you want. But to understand how it all comes together before the influence of jazz or rock grooves... listen to guys like Dafnis Prieto, or El Negro, etc... And then watch guys like Antonio Sanchez and Weckl and how they fuse it with other stuff...

  • It doesn't look any easier in slow motion.

  • this is not so nice i refrain

  • le falta mucho swing al maestro weckl

  • i like the steady beat of percussionist! listen carefully how the the drums make flams

    with that beat!

    its obvious!

  • it is mozambique......steve gad....

  • Man that sounds really sloppy! Tighten up your skins for god's sake, they sound aweful!!! This really does sound like it's slowed down - truly aweful! pffff

    ;) hehe

  • @fizzyfox But for certain genres you have to tune your drum set just like guitar. if you were going to play jazz, reggae, etc. make your drum skins tighter but not to tight (don't want it to sound like tin cans) Latin, some Jamaican music loosen your drum skin so it has that jungle sound. Each genre has its own drum tuning you don't just tune once and play everything it won't sound good:)

  • He is a legend, next to buddy rich of course. Dave Weckyl is such a technical drummer it is beyond me, no one can really compare

  • speed, precision, art, expression, and passion. . .weckl

  • im not exclusive to any company. i mix and match to what sounds good to me. the only things i like from sabian are their chinas and ozone crashes. i only like zildjian hi hats and crashes. and i only like meinl splashes and rides and hi hats. my set consists of a dw eco x shell pack. dw 9002 double bass and all dw hardware. zildjian a custom hi hats (although i want to get meinl extra dark hi hats) and crashes, meinl mega bell ride, sabian aaxplosion china and ozone, and a meinl byzance splash

  • Those handmade cymbals are a pain in the ass to make, imagine hammering on them for 12 hours straight.... Awesome video, thanks for uploading;)

  • @nool0010 You should use the term "hand-made" or even "hand-hammered" very loosely.

What it actually means is that they are controlling a machine with their hand (as opposed to an automated machine), thus making it "legally" hand made.

  • turkish handmade cymbals (istanbul, alchemy, bosporus etc.) are the great and unique

  • The Sabian company was founded in 1981 in Meductic, New Brunswick, Canada by Robert Zildjian, son of Avedis Zildjian III, the head of the Avedis Zildjian Company.

  • Interesting fact: The Sabian cymbal company was started by a man named Zildjian... In my opinion, they are quality cymbals.

  • Amen my brother! I use 'em myself.

  • what about paiste´s??

that alpha cymbals are pretty good ;)

  • great stuff sounds great in any tempo

  • where is the flava?

  • Do you mean Sabian Zildjians .. ;P

  • o rrible

  • Sabian and Paiste are both quality cymbals. I use a combination of Paiste and Zildjian cymbals....I don't purchase cymbals according to brand...I just buy what sounds the best for that particular piece I'm looking for.

  • agreed, gr8 point mate

  • @VonArkesh but if you were a famous drummer and you wanted to be sponsored you would need to stick with one company, which is bullshit. i completely agree with you

  • WTF is wrong with sabians? is it because they are Canadian so all you hicks auto-hate them. Have you now noticed most noticeable drummers these days have all converted to sabians?! they're BEAUTIFUL!!

  • I'm not against sabians. I think they sound wonderful. But, i also love zildjian.

Which is why i have two sets. One devoted to sabian, and one devoted to zildjian =)

  • i started on zildjian and now use sabians. i might try meinl for my next set up, they have some nice cymbals

  • meinl are an amazing sound man! i still prefer sabians but meinl is definitely 2nd choice

  • yeah the byzance are greats and AMUN too

  • what the hell. People dont like Sabian and imply its because they're CANADIAN!!!! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU! haha

  • Dave has to be careful to keep his big head out of the way, lol!

Cool way to learn a groove. Thank you.

    peace.

  • I find it odd that you admire machines before humans.

  • che grezza...

  • back inthe good days when he used zildjian!!!

  • not even paiste rules lol!!!! but he uses sabian now =( hmmm whatever he still know how to play hahah

  • Dave Weckl; AKA "The Atomic Clock"

  • Wait, wait! "The Atomic Clock" is Gene Hoglan's title!

  • Indeeed!

  • Just like we say here in Brazil: "There is japanese perfoming samba"

  • what does it mean?

  • "Japones no samba" Try to figure out japanese in Sapucahy Ave. playing samba or trying to dance samba!! Dave Weckl playing in this kind of Samba is like that!!

  • sounds like a trip

  • Comment removed

  • wow yo, i still remember looking at this beat in his book when i was learning, i was like O.O it took me forever to get this beat down

  • i would have added the cow bell my self,,,,what a brilliant drummer !

  • Anyone who thinks this is easy is crazy.

Normally bands would need four people to play Weckl's rhythm, because he's playing something completely different on each drum.

  • kermit4prezident said it

i mean some guy on another one of dave's vids said "he's ok". and apparently that guy's a drummer.

what kind of drummer is he?

  • People that would say that are nondrummers or just not very good. Most people don't realize that although playing a drum set is easier than other instruments in many respects, drums are the only instrument on which you can use all four limbs independently. I would say that over 99% of people cannot play a polyrhythm even with only their hands, disregarding footwork.

  • Matched? I saw him play with traditional grip in another vid..so he use both? Which is he better in? he seems to own in trad.

  • His main is Tradition. He barely ever uses Matched. Check out his vid Back to Basics, it's awesome :D

  • But he can fully master matched grip too huh? But whats the purpose of changing?

  • I think he talks in his vid that it produces more power. Maybe he just gets bored from traditional some times. I play matched, but every once in a while I try Traditional for kicks. It's really fun :P

  • the snare hit at :32 is gross

  • yeah but you wouldn't notice at all in normal speed

  • My absolute favorite style to play and/or move in and out of from other styles

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa weckl rules

  • NICE MULLET! :)

  • dave weckl is the sh*t! i love watching his solos on video. i saw his clinic in dallas in dec 2003. its even more badass when you see him live.

  • Even at half speed he plays better than me :P

  • ofc he plays better cuz speed aint got nothing to do with the quality of someones drumming

  • Yes it does. That grove in normal speed which is three times as fast sounds much better.

  • I think the issue with that though is that if you can't play it slow, why play it fast?

It will just sound dirty and like you have no control over what is going on. Which is sort of why I don't see why Weckl didn't just slow down to actually play it at half speed. It would sound more accurate and more beneficial. But kudos to him for doing it regardless. It's always helpful to know what is actually going on in the groove.

  • speed may have to do with it, but Drumming is mainly about Quality. Speed makes it better and gives off more quality.

  • God I hate that cliché! of course it does. speed is a techniqe as much as any other. playing groves in 30 bpm all the time might not suit the music. All professional drummers practict to get their playing up to speed.

  • speed is good but i would take a drummer who can hold down this beat anyday speed in drumming is nothing and thats my opinion at the end of the day u can hit huge bpms and some kid kills u with a samba, or any latin beat at 30 bpm

  • @LavIsInTheAiR sure it does, but its not all about speed.

  • LoLL

  • uuuuuuuuuuuhhhh........it's scary ....now he's quite human.........not used to that :)

  • Why?

  • Thanx a lot, now I know how to do the ride patern

  • this is a tutorial...tutorials aren't meant for entertainment purposes <:B

  • This is the problem with Weckl, he never shows anything at half speed - so it's a good thing that we have these slowed down videos! :D

  • argh, his mullet is always so distractive!

  • distracting?!! still awesome comment though
