What a bloody fool, the single worse review I've ever heard. Simply because to make a decent review, the critic should have intelligence, alas this arse doesn't.
Did the reviewer read the Compass books when he got older or and knew the backstory of the books? Because if he already knew the backstory of the Compass books and was old enough to understand the material, then his point about the books being less than subtle is moot. The reason he didn't see the christian message in the Narnia series is because he was a kid and didn't see the complex themes related to religion.
@mega12345671234567 not a children's novel? What section of a library/bookstore do you find it in? The author himself said he made this as the atheists version of Narnia. Narnia is a kid series that metaphorically parallels the bible if you look for it you can find it. Golden Compass is about killing the Christian god. And note that's the premise that made me interested. It's how terribly it's done that makes me not like it.
hate to break it to you, but it's not a childrens novel.Read all the books before spouting utter shit. Adult book, with a child as a heroine. Nothing happens in the second book. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. More stuff happens in that book than the first easily.
u didn't read the third book, U DIDN'T READ THE THIRD BOOK, I'm sorry but u can't review the series then can u, also it's not a war lon GOD, it's a war on repression, it's a war on the churches power, I'm religious and i wasn't insulted, the dust represents wisdom and the rise of humanity after Adam and Eve, it's got many undertones but the story is great, Lyra isn't that bad, she's 12 or something, determined and a good liar, some people arn't mature enough to read it

@blowshimselfupdude ......yeah there is that problem and the second book is boring in parts as is the third which is also really convoluted a good yet flawed series.
talk because Lyra's world is set in a different universe where people's souls take physical forms... they're a part of their personality, they are able to see and talk to a part of themselves unlike people in Will's world (our world) where our "souls" are inside us. there is ceaseless violence, deception, and, controversial plot twists that most people wouldn't dare go. and the ending?! for gods sake. this series is meant for intelligent, open-minded readers.. not kids. that is all.
ok dude. i just finished reading the series recently and i want to say a few things.
you definitely have great points but one problem is that you keep referring to it as a children's book. when it pullman ever say it was intended for children? what exactly makes this a children's book? IT'S NOT! and the protagonists are children and there are talking animals,... but if you understand the story kids are extremely important in relation to Dust - which is the main storyline - and animals can
@justitan It IS a childrens book. It WAS written for kids as a response to the Narnia series. AND it's sold in the CHILDREN'S section in book stories as well as the library.
@blowshimselfupdude Well whoever classified the series in the children's category must have not read the books. Just because its a response to Narnia doesn't mean the story should be appropriate for kids too. The story is blatantly about killing God (opposite of Narnia, oppositie audience) ... read the last one and you will see how offensive the series would be to Christians. The character Dr. Malone directly says "Christianity is a powerful and convincing mistake." ...and she's a good guy.
@blowshimselfupdude This is my last comment. Pullman definitely didn't say that. I've read his interviews. He's said time and again that he writes for anyone that is interested, no particular audience. So yes, there will be questionable material if you put it in the childrens section, which the publishers do. I just know he doesn't like Narnia mainly because he thinks its morbid how the kids embrace death at the end. It just depends on how you look at it i guess. Good day. Read the third book!!
Mate I like both Narnia and His Dark Materials but yes I agree I myself am 15 and believe this book should be aimed at teens and younger kids. I myself am Christian but I just love fantasy and adventure stories so I just put the whole IM KILLING GOD things apart and enjoy the adventure.
I like the first book because I thought the concept of daemons and other worlds with talking polar bears and magic and stuff. I didn't read the other two books cause I just didn't like them for some reason.
The Author can say whatever he wants; the words can't go any further than their meaning. You should know that. I do know that is why I responded you. Think for your self. Analize this Movie and Narnia and point out to us what makes them religious, specifics. Forget about the author said he only said that to sell more copies of it by making it controversial. Anyways i am not attacking you just pointing out the fact from fiction the stories have commons rather than negative reflections on other.
Barbaric things happen in many stories and are no indication that it is being encourage or rewarded. Most agree that Lyra is a bitch in training but think she is a child, Kids at her 12 are still impulsive and dont think things through like adults: you! Plus, there are things in her world that she cares about therefore she cant easily pick and chose what she saves. Stop Bringing Religion into this it only complicates things and it creates falsified misconceptions of a conglomerate of situations.
I wouldn't have brought religion into it if the author haden't said that this series was an antichristian series. That makes it religious and must be viewed as such.
Its safe to make an assumption which is that you are of a faith specifically. These books are not meant to be for Kids they just happen to be associated with Kids. You should read the third book. How is this in anyway attacking Christianity and Narnia? you are not giving specifics. You seem to contradict yourself about all over the place. It does not seem like you know what you are talking about. The 2 series are unrelated. Think that barbaric things have been part of the human experience 4ever.
They are related because the author said so. He said they were ment to be the antinarnia. Or narnia for athiests if you will. So I reviewed it as a "critique" of another series which is what it was created as.
If you don't know about the series you shouldn't coment about it.
I know you don't like Transformers 2007, but aren't you mad that the CGI bear fight won the Oscar Award in front of the fight with Optimus and Bonecrusher?
i read the first book a while back but i never finished it. now i remeber the main character got drunk and she said she loved it. wow what a message to children.
i dont mean individuality like that :P lol, i should add IF your looking for a theme in the movie then that is what it would be i guess (i wasnt expecting themes from movie, nor am i big fan of film; its okay) with the character development of dancing penguin. As a 2nd theme; Does every one become like him? I dont see it that way; they still sing & are who they were b4 but they've learnt that dancing isnt wrong just because someone says it is (im actually seeing what you mean now bout church :P)
2) TO add, i do like hidden and subtle themes & concepts in books, but i dont think HAVE to hide them for kids
Only read 1st book & was so bored that didnt bother continuing. I got themes in the book but i didnt find how it was written, the world or characters appealing. Im an Atheist and didnt like the book; & im sure many, if not most dont, cause its simply not good book series. Nor do we necessarily have same morals as the writer. I am however opposed to the probs that religion causes
1) Happy Feet? really? wow i didn't take it that way at all. I saw it as being an individual and being true to yourself, WHICH i suppose is an attack on the church or any organized religion lol :P but i doubt its intended specifically for that purpose. But why would them having it subtle theme be wrong, but would be right it Gold Compass
I dont think hiding themes of a book from its audience is really the right way to go, nor just refusing to talk intellectually to kids and making them think.
i hate that term "being true to yourself" its just a nice way of saying "i dont give a crap of what anyone else thinks and iam gonna do what i want to do" but no one can get offended because it sounds nice.

On Amazon this isn't classified as "childrens fiction," it's called "young adult," which is for probably around 13+, who I think could take it.

There are tons of people in the world who are not christians!
Seriously....the christians ruin everything!
They complained about Harry Potter as it involves magic
and even this book! It is only a story not a true fact!
They said j.k.Rowling is a witch...
said David Copperfield uses dark magic and black magic or whatever!
They seriously ruined everything!
Thumps up if you agree!
and this is not a childrens novel for goodness sake!

@TheAnthrochocobo Actually they removed the ending fromt eh first book because they didn't want it to end on a downer.
They had every intention to make the sequels but the movie didn't make money so no sequels.
Ya saying "atheist propaganda" as if it's just religious nuts that think this. The author has SAID it's atheist propaganda.
