@ShadowMageDragon The Impact Dial (in Usopp's hand) works by absorbing the force behind attacks (sword cuts, punches, cannonballs, hell even a Gigant Jet Bazooka) and stores it for later use.

When used, it acts like a firearm - the force is projected from the side opposite the apex of the shell (aka the trigger), causing a shockwave. However, it has a recoil effect (Newton's Third Law - Action = Reaction) which will hurt the user. Repeated use will lead to damage to the arm.

Still, in all honesty, Usopp needed that kind of punishment. I know, I know, it's not normal to do things like that, but he is the weakest male of the group, so he definitely needs to get used to the pain in order for his body to learn and adapt to such impacts.

It definitely helped him by expanding the limits of his body to a new level, because he was starting to get tougher even before that training with Heracles.

Usopp is definitely one of the most interesting characters of One piece.
