How I wish the people around her had made her aware of just how talented and beautiful she was. It's an absolute tragedy that this young lady became so desperately unhappy.
I've always liked the Carpenters, but mainly listened to the popular songs. However after this song and performance, they are more talented than imagined. Plus Karen's voice is so mesmerizing she could sing a grocery list and would sound incredible.
Wow, this was great to see. I remember begging my Mom to let me stay up to watch Johnny Carson because The Carpenters were on! She did let me. She was an amazing drummer, one of the reasons I played the drums. Only wish I could've played half as well as her!
It's always such a joy to watch her drumming, not just because she is great at it, but because she just looks so damned blissful while doing it. The drums were her first love and her passion and I wish they would have let her keep playing.
Miss Meter! I would love to play bass to that- unreal, the separation of church and state with her voice and limbs. I loved the Carpenters when I was a kid- as many did. I thought it was those lucious close harmonies... now I see why,
it was the back beat!
I wish the singers I record had half her intonation and feel and as for the drummers whining about their headphone mix... notice has been served. I'll make them watch this video.
When you think of the book Little Girl Blue & the emphasis to make Richard Carpenter look like the bad guy, isen't it sad what the world has come to... Have you, or me not made mistakes in Life, or said if I knew then, what I know now. The most important think that I could share that I'm most certain about is that Richard Loved Karen more than anything on earth. Many don't respect the book, but it doesn't mean were going to put Randy Schmidt's home address on You Tube even thought we have it.
Karen Carpenter was indeed was of the finest drummers of all time. She combined the best of jazz and rock into everything she did. Her timing and feel where absolutely impeccable! The "great one", Buddy Rich, said she was one of his favorite drummers.
WTF?? That last line by Johnny, "Make the good times last with a Sony Tape recorder, brought to you by Superscope". LOL, I've never heard Sony and Superscope in teh same sentence before, that's wild!
Behind a drum kit is where Karen truly belonged. She never seemed happier, plus what the hell, it's not like she couldn't sing and drum at the same time, actually she was one of the most talented drummers at doing that! Damn, even Roger Taylor of Queen or that girl from Maximum The Hormone never sung as well as her while drumming.
I've always loved the vocal harmonies on Mr Guder, also. Really makes the song what it is.
Karen seemed happiest when drumming and singing. Saw them twice in concert and they were absolutely perfection.....a joyous experience that I will never forget. thanks for the vid!
wow. wow - thanks for posting, truly brings back memories. This series, besides the great talent of the Carpenters, shows how much the tonight show has changed, and the subtle master of talk shows that Carson was.
I was in a number of bands that Mr. Guder directed years ago. He was a nice guy but very much a "company man" meaning he was a conformist. He was the sort of guy that young people were rebelling against during the late1960s. Disneyland itself has a very rigid behavior and dress code even today. I asked Mr. Guder about this song about 20 years ago, and his account closely matches that of Richard Carpenter in this video. I didn't know this video existed until today.
This performance is OUTSTANDING! And the song...don't think I've ever heard it before, but it is QUICKLY becoming one of my favorites!
When you see Karen interact with her drums, you can just tell she was a TRUE drummer--having that subtlety of touch to know how to get each little note out of her drums. Even the little looks she gets on her face, match the notes she's playing.
Great ....thanks for posting this...it's one of my favorite Carpenter songs...I never new the story behind it but it looks like they had a lot of fun performing it....this is super...
Considering this was Nov 1973, I'm very surprised that they did not decide to play Yesterday Once More, or Top of the World during this performance. Those songs were relatively new at that time.
Johnny Carson really liked them. He knew/respected their talent. But he liked them personally. It shows. It's like the old saying - nice poeple like nice people. Just because they're all legends doesn't change a thing.
Fantastic arrangement; one of the best displays of both Karen and Richard Carpenter ... thanks very much for posting. Incredible talent ... miss you Karen!
Karen is majestic and blissful on the drums, needless to say the voice as well. Johnny says at the end "Make the good times last". If only it were true. A precious moment in time, when Karen was alive & vibrant, Johnny was alive, and I was still young. Perhaps one day in Christ all our eternal longings will return in glory for eternity. Seems like ultimately this life leaves us longing.
This song's called "Mr. Guder" I believe it's from the "Close to You" LP.
Man, I'm getting shivers watching this. She was so incredibly talented and unmatched today. There's only been very few singing drummers in the business at that time---Phil Collins of Genesis and Don Henley of The Eagles. I think Karen was one of a handful--if any--who sang at the same time---and so fabulously well!!
There seem to be quite a few videos of Karen playing the drums, and the one thing that stands out is that she would use different setups and play them without being fazed, whereas most drummers tend to setup the same way every time out of habit. This is undoubtedly a testament to her unbelievable talent. The joy on her face as she plays the drums is palpable.
Her happy place was behind the drums. She is fantasically talented. Shame her drumming wasnt' showcased more to be honest. Her voice is to die for but they definately didn't make the best of her drumming talent. RIP You sweet woman. Missed by a new generation that never even knew you. xxx
@TheSami1973 Actually they did... during the tours from 1976-1978, Karen had an entire part of the show dedicated to her drumming talent. She was fantastic indeed.
That voice made you believe she knew all there was to know about life. She really could sing you the phone book and make it sound essential. AND she could really play!!! Don't even get me started on the talent of her brother......
She was certainly a superstar. Probably the best voice since Judy Garland. Also a good drummer. She has been long missed as well a s Mr Johnny Carson...
@lightzZz10 How about the Wilson sisters? Ann or Nancy both very talented with beautiful voices and tons of writing ability. Nothing slack about their instrumental capabilities either. I'm sure they could sing Carpenters songs, not sure Karen could pull off some Heart songs though. This is not an apples and oranges comparison either, all three are uniquely qualified.
@greenwich1754 - Well, Lady knows how to get their attention, but in the long run she'll be a flash in the pan like Vanilla Ice or Boy George. Karen and Richard's problem with critics could have been saved on one front by getting fashion advice from someone other than Nellie Olsen.
@Alvin4NY I was a teenager in the 70's and Karen's clothing and hair was in style at that time. For better or worse, that's what young women were wearing then.
@ftnirish59 - If you lived on a prairie! C'mon, Agnes made a lot of these costumes, and some of them (like this dress) looks like it was fitted on Richard, and then givent to Karen. Karen would have been fine in a mini-with her hair up, and a cute pair of boots. (think, a Marcia Brady look) I was around during that period, too, and the only people that dressed like this, worked on a farm and called their Father, "Pa" LOL
@Alvin4NY I don't think it's a dress, but super wide-leg pants. Anyway, Karen could have worn a potato sack with cow pies for shoes and I wouldn't have cared. I just wanted to hear her sing and play the drums.
@Alvin4NY I think Karen's best "drumming" outfits were the "Dancing in the Streets" ones with the boots- too cute! The "Lead Sister" shirt and jeans were also cool. I didn't like the "Talk of the Town" long mauve dress at all.
That was wonderfully experimental. Oh my word they were both such fantastic musicians and she has to be one of the most underrated drummers of the last century. It's a tragedy that commercialism to her out from behind the drums to somewhere she didn't really want to be. It would have been fascinating to see where their music would have gone if they had eventually gone down this route. Richard was an awesome arranger, that a capella bit was superb and the groove she plays afterwards sublime

haha - actually, mikper you are correct. i will definitely be suffering next to hitler, stalin, and hubbard, among others. and this song sucks. i think ill listen to "tuni (song for karen)", which is about this drumming skeleton i see in the video.
Besides their clean image and class, I like the fact that the Carpenters - who were raised on jazz - fused jazz and classical into their repertoire. But what a strange drum set up...sounds like Karen is playing on a drum pad. But why? For effects? Great chart - especially the Bachian break - but this part doesn't seem to work.
It might just be that it's part of the sound quality (the disintegrating nature of tape in general), remember this is listed as being taped from '73. Or, moreover, perhaps the drums weren't properly staged or miked. Just my suggestions...
The best singer Drummer EVER... no doubt about it.... We miss u Karen,..RICHARD we love u both... we want unreleased songs for this 40th anniversary!!! take them out!!! :D
I can play and sing at the same time, but it takes alot of practice. I really wish they would have left her behind the drum set. It might have saved her life.
I expected another ad-lib, drum-sync, "play along with the record", but this was awesome to see this! I grew up listening to their music, and KNEW she played the drums, but never actually SAW her do it!
I've never seen this! Thanks so much! They were so young and so talented.....and they did all of it themselves...unlike today's mostly untalented people.....
Delightful! Clever, creative, musical, enjoyable. I miss them. It used to be a real pleasure to just turn on the car radio and it seemed there would always be some station playing one of their songs. Thanks to youtube and the many fans who have posted these videos. Hey, back in the 70s we couldn't watch videos in the car.
I wonder if the fact that they took her out from behind the drum kit might have been a tiny contributing factor to her problems in subsequent years. That was really her true passion.
the musical planets were always lined up when the Carpenters sang and played, its just really great music...and what more can you say about that voice, wow! its 2009 and it still moves me the same way.
So, that's who Mr. Guder was (unless they used a pseudonym for his name) -- their former boss in the late 60s.
---
His name was Vic Guder. He was a High School Music teacher as well and his students say he was a really nice person. Richard Carpenter was later repentant of this song -- and considered it a cheap shot against a good man.
Absolutely wonderful! I always liked this song. To see them playing it is so great! This is NOT an easy song to play or sing. Karen does both with finesse and sweet confidence. I'm a professional drummer of 35 years and she is quite good. What a terribly sad loss! Thanks for posting this!!!
Hey, ROCKDUO do happen to have Hamilton Joe Frank and Reyolds signing "Everyday Without You" on the the Midnight Special. I think it aired Feb 9,1973.
Wow good to SEE this again. You see I recorded this on my little Mongomery Wards tape recorder the night it aired back in 1973 The tape still plays 35 years later BUT the sound quailty here is much better. Everyone three cheers for ROCKDUO!!!
Karen does look great, but dang - those early 70s hairstyles, and that granny dress...awful. I think the camera tends to put weight on people so she probably thought she looked plump when she was actually a perfect, healthy, normal weight. Such a shame. She sounds so rich and deep here, in '73.
Richard's arraingement is brilliant, but Karen on the drums here is genious...her emotion as it tilts with the slaps amd bumps of the drums is .... hell, it priceless!
For what it's worth,I don't think John Bonham was in karen's league as a drummer and musician. She could play any kind of music and had tremendous jazz and rock chops.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hope you meant that the other way around. Karen is not even close in ability on drums as J Bonham. I mean SO not close. She was a great singer, but not even an ok drummer. Put it this way, she'd have never gotten a gig like that just on her drumming abilities.
Do you know about Karens Jazz drumming in the mid to late 60's before the Carpenters were commercially popular? They were called 'The Richard Carpenter Trio'.They won 1st place in the 1966 Hollywood battle of the Bands, and she was like 16 years old.She was an amazing Jazz drummer.Have you heard this music? Buddy Rich thought she was wonderful.Karen could play anything.
Never mind about the ignoramous in the prior set. Karen was a GREAT drummer, and the only reason it's not much mentioned is that she was with Ella and Patsy as one of the 5 great female voices of the 20th Cent. If he has any abouts, watch the Holland and Budokan videos on Johnny B Good. Not only great, but JOYOUS druming. Karen: Vox Angelica.
When I was a in my teens I managed to learn all Bonhams playing and solos.I later heard Karen Carpenter play a couple of pop and jazz solos and I just barely could handle what she was doing.I have no doubt that if Karen had lived longer, she would have put out some top rate jazz recordings.
That good song, I love the flute sounds like in this area, there is the joy of Karen as loved and enjoyed his great passion play drums and sing the same time, transmitting all their joy, all his love all that passion that I had in his soul for the music.
How I wish the people around her had made her aware of just how talented and beautiful she was. It's an absolute tragedy that this young lady became so desperately unhappy.

hepcat2009 2 years ago
It might just be that it's part of the sound quality (the disintegrating nature of tape in general), remember this is listed as being taped from '73. Or, moreover, perhaps the drums weren't properly staged or miked. Just my suggestions...

Wow ! I can also see " Genesis" doing this song too

Karen was and still is da bomb!

I can play and sing at the same time, but it takes alot of practice. I really wish they would have left her behind the drum set. It might have saved her life.
chefjoeyrof 2 years ago
In a certain way the drums were her magic circle. Behind the drum set she was safe.

I played the drums, and could never sing and play at the same time,,,,

Yeah and She does it both flawlessly, What an extraordinary talent

what a show off! :):)
I expected another ad-lib, drum-sync, "play along with the record", but this was awesome to see this! I grew up listening to their music, and KNEW she played the drums, but never actually SAW her do it!
thanks for this!

People don't believe me when I tell them that Karen Carpenter was one of Buddy Rich's favorite pop drummers. It's true.

I believe you because Im a drummer too and she was very influenced by him .

She was kicking ass playing the drums.

wow! she realy enjoyed playing drums! maybe more than just sing?
mergonite 2 years ago
I think your right. Her drumming passion is bellowing over.
acdeucee 2 years ago
I wonder if the fact that they took her out from behind the drum kit might have been a tiny contributing factor to her problems in subsequent years. That was really her true passion.
diamonddog13 2 years ago
Yep I bet your right.
acdeucee 2 years ago
I think so. Her best vocals were behind the drum kit. I think it messed w/ her groove to perform w/o them.
Also, - the level of musicanship in this band was incredible.
Most pop groups today just fake it Live, and have session players record the albums.

the musical planets were always lined up when the Carpenters sang and played, its just really great music...and what more can you say about that voice, wow! its 2009 and it still moves me the same way.

What a gem of a performance with Karen drumming away while Richard works the ARP Odyssey synth, plus her rich vocals.
newporter42 3 years ago
Karen was so awesome, not to minimize Richard. The two were something you just don't find in pop music anymore. Karen was so talented and beautiful!

The truly amazing thing is they're performing without monitors.

So, that's who Mr. Guder was (unless they used a pseudonym for his name) -- their former boss in the late 60s. Wow!

His name was Vic Guder. He was a High School Music teacher as well and his students say he was a really nice person. Richard Carpenter was later repentant of this song -- and considered it a cheap shot against a good man.

Gotcha. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

She was so awesome. In every single way.
And Rich is such an awesome arranger/composer.

She sounds so rich and deep here, in '73.
steveatl40 3 years ago
Karen is at her best her, before she lost weight, she looks fantastic
CMCHRYSLERVALIANT 3 years ago

Richard's arraingement is brilliant, but Karen on the drums here is genious...her emotion as it tilts with the slaps amd bumps of the drums is .... hell, it priceless!

For what it's worth,I don't think John Bonham was in karen's league as a drummer and musician. She could play any kind of music and had tremendous jazz and rock chops.

I hope you meant that the other way around. Karen is not even close in ability on drums as J Bonham. I mean SO not close. She was a great singer, but not even an ok drummer. Put it this way, she'd have never gotten a gig like that just on her drumming abilities.
mctalks 3 years ago
Do you know about Karens Jazz drumming in the mid to late 60's before the Carpenters were commercially popular? They were called 'The Richard Carpenter Trio'.They won 1st place in the 1966 Hollywood battle of the Bands, and she was like 16 years old.She was an amazing Jazz drummer.Have you heard this music? Buddy Rich thought she was wonderful.Karen could play anything.
mndswpr 3 years ago 2
Never mind about the ignoramous in the prior set. Karen was a GREAT drummer, and the only reason it's not much mentioned is that she was with Ella and Patsy as one of the 5 great female voices of the 20th Cent. If he has any abouts, watch the Holland and Budokan videos on Johnny B Good. Not only great, but JOYOUS druming. Karen: Vox Angelica.
cruice45 3 years ago
When I was a in my teens I managed to learn all Bonhams playing and solos.I later heard Karen Carpenter play a couple of pop and jazz solos and I just barely could handle what she was doing.I have no doubt that if Karen had lived longer, she would have put out some top rate jazz recordings.
mndswpr 3 years ago 3
And John Bonham sucks as a singer so all is even.

in the seventies, Playboy magazine's readers voted Karen a better drummer than John Bonham. Any thoughts on this?
mka800 4 years ago
Well John was obviously the better drummer. But as far as a magazine like Playboy was concerned, he wouldn't look good in lingerie.

Amazing how Karen sings and plays Drum so perfect, but that also goes for Richard, singing and playing the piano/organ so perfectly also?
