Ironically, Conrad Viedt (who plays the villainous Major Strasser) was well-known in Germany for his anti-Nazi sympathis, plus his wife was Jewish so they had to flee Germany.
@AncientHistoryBuff What a nice thing to remind us all especially in an emotionally charged movie like Casablanca. Viedt must have felt uncomfortable in a Nazi uniform but he trooped on and contributed a great deal to this classic.
one of the best scenes in the movie. i also get emotional whenever i see this part, and i'm also not French. the majority of the actors in this scene were real-life refugees so the crying is not acting.

The actors in this scene were mostly Frenchmen in exile so this was an emotional scene for the remember when this came out France was under occupation
It is that moment where the camera flashes to the girlfriend's tearful countenance, the admiration of Isla, the man in the background who punches at the air, the woman playing the instrument, the cry of 'Vivre la France'...the passion is inspirational. One of the greatest scenes in the film, of the greatest scenes in cinema.
That is one bloody good scene! I gets me to feel so patriotic! I seriously love how everybody just stands up and begins to sing the french national song while the German's just stands and looks annoyed and ridiculous! It gets to me every time I see it! No insult intended to Germans or French! That is the one scene where Rich shows his true colors! Love the scene!
I love that at 0:49 the focus cuts back onto the Germans while the people sing "Contre nous de la tyrannie" - "Opposing us is tyranny" It's little things like this which make Casablanca such an amazing film.
"Fixed fortifications are monuments to human stupidity."-George Patton at the Maginot Line. The reason France fell in 1940 was Stalin making a pact with Hitler to divide up Poland, leftwing pacifists and rightwing issolationists cutting defense budgets and feeding their neighbors to the wolves hoping the wolves would eat them last, and 7 deadly sins having natural consequences
The German song that they are singing isn't the national anthem is it? I'm terribly ignorant of the culture and it's history. Is the song an old version of the anthem or.... what?
@Blueblooblu They're singing "Die Wacht am Rhein". It was never the German national anthem (That would be "Deutchland Über Alles"), but it's still a very patriotic song.
Sadly, remymartin seems to be an American who is even more historically ignorant than usual.
S/he should be aware that American Independence would not have happened without the massive military aid from France. In particular, the fact that the French Navy, for one of the few times in the last 300 years, managed to wrest control of the North Atlantic from the British, meant that the British in America could not be guaranteed resupply. Hence the surrender at Yorktown
I think the whole France is a big representation of freedom, they helped U.S.A. in their war of independece, gives them the statue of liberty plus they helped indirectly in the independece of some latin countries when Napoleon invaded Spain and overthrew their king..so vive la france! Greetings from Argentina.
I've just have to say I'm Spanish and I do not specially like French people (kidding). However, this scene make understand how important freedom is, bigger than countries and nationalities. Vive la France, vive la Liberté!!!

Don't you think that murdering or hating "different" people (exist equal people? we all are different from each other) will solve your problem, your nation's problems. Yes, the capitalism actually are the source of the problem, like in WW1, like in WW2, and, probably, the father of the 3.

@pjkiger@R2Parmly@ubetok you all make points that I agree with, I think maybe there was a little misunderstanding here. My comment was intended solely as tongue-in-cheek.... i'm sure you've heard the one about the italian tanks in world war ii, which had 1 forward gear and 6 reverse gears.....
The french had more soldiers, more and better tanks, and more airplanes than the Germans in Sept 1939 - they just did not have the will to fight after the what happened in WWI
Well, the French lost more men in WWI and the birthrate did not allow a replenishment of young men so the Nazi's overwelmed them. It's a myth perpetuated by the right wing here in the US that the French are weak, that they couldn't protect their homeland. They tried by constructung the Maginot line which was all they could do with the dirth of men to protect the country from Invasion...
This scene always brings tears to my eyes, when Victor Lazlo orchestrates La Marseilles and incites everyone to sing along, putting the loathsome Nazis to shame...love this scene! Hell, I LOVE THE CLASSIC, PERIOD!!!
Casablanca = The best film of all time. That said, regardless of the military prowess, or lack thereof in the rest of Europe at the time,it's well known that Jews and others -- a good many of whom were French citizens -- were expelled from France, both occupied and "free" territory, with the direct knowledge and assistance of both the French police and citizenry. Expelled, as in, sent to be exterminated in the camps. Ask why French students don't learn about Vel d'Hiv.
The look that Else gives Victor at 1:20 is the final confirmation that she recognises Victor is not just a man she loves and respects for his personal courage, but is someone who's personality is so much bigger. A man who can inspire many people to rise up against tyranny and whose contribution to the cause is crucial. It dawns on her now that she absolutely must not allow her old feelings for Rick to be resurrected. Much more important issues are at stake...

Reparem no rosto da Ingrid Bergman, na hora em que Viktor desce as escadas e quando ele canta a Marseillaise. Ela demonstra a admiração que tem pelo marido, apesar de amar outro homem (Rick). Um show de interpretação !
I enjoy a good French joke as much as the next guy, but anyone seriously suggesting that the French defeat was due to some sort of French cowardice or lack of resolve is obviously geographically and historically ignorant. there was no army capable of doing much in the face of the Werhmacht besides flee at the time. If you had given the French a 21 mile wide moat or half a continent to fight behind, it's hard to imagine the would have done much worse than the British or the Soviets.
@crassgop Actually, "lack of resolve" WAS the key to France's defeat in 1940. France in the 1930's was a constant nightmare of political conflict, polarization, rioting, lack of unity, and revolving-door governments. Simply put, the French, until it was too late, were more concerned with defeating each other than their ancient foe, They had more tanks, troops, and planes than the Germans, but were poorly led by a defeatist elected government, and went down quickly.
I love this scene, always have, but just as much I love the dialogue when the Nazi officer asks Blaine: "Can you imagine us in London?" and he replies:"When you get there, ask me." And the indisuputable, hard fact is that they didn't get there. Pick whatever reason you wish, the Battle of Britain, the weather in the channel, politics, the Royal Navy or Hitler's horoscope. But they didn;'t get there!
All the more powerful when you realize Victor Laszlo is NOT French. But that was French territory and he couldn't stand them having to sit there in that cafe and listen to Nazi's sing their song.
@blackiemittens It was SYMBOLICAL . It was a representation of ALL FREE European peoples resisting the Nazi's oppression under the maximus symbol of the French who were the most numerous European resistants;
I think you misunderstood my post. This scene is a spontaneous action on Laszlo's part. Symbolism takes time and thought behind it. ALL FREE European peoples, didn't enter into the scene's content, or my post. I think your righteous indignation is a bit misplaced.
Still the greatest patriotic scene in film history. The beautiful Madelaine LeBeau is not acting...she'd recently come over from France. That face tells you everything you need to know about how precious liberty is.
@cra0422 Always noticed. Rick the professed Neutral Party. It's supposed to illustrate how his supposedly cool and diplomatic demeanor is slipping, how he's getting caught up in the passions of both the war and his woman, the two great themes of Casablanca.
So I always imagine Captain Renault saying (when he looks up at the staircase where Rick is standing) O HAI RICK. WHERE IZ UR NEUTRALITY NOW? (lolcats style, always)
This film is a masterclass in unspoken acting. Ingrid Bergman did more acting with those eyes than many actors manage with a million words and gestures. Just watch the brilliance of her, Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains, none of whom spoke a word in this scene.
only french can save face by chanting while their soldiers flee and desert en masse. also, no wonder they're hunting collaborators after the day was saved by others.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Shame they couldn't have been this resilient when the Nazis swaggered their way across the country to Dunkirk. Fabulous scene though, and makes you realise how shit the english national anthem is in comparison.
@ubetok Not just the politics (France was very divided), but also poor leadership from the generals, primitive communications, refighting the last war, and the surprise of the Ardennes Offensive. All that said, it is one hell of an anthem and a movie. Thanks for posting.
@justsamgosney, No country was able to take on the Wehrmacht one on one on land in those days. They slammed in and took small countries in days, France in weeks, and they would of had England easy if there was no channel in the way. No Army could match up. Finally the vastness of the USSR ground them down, and the Red Army learned from experience and began to equal and then smash them to the hell they belonged
Agreed the French Anthem is one of the very best and the English one is semi-dead.
@otherjr Then why didn't they? When Hitler watched thousands of battered, morale-sapped soldiers retreat from Dunkirk, why didn't he strike? Because there was water? The reason Hitler didn't attack the UK was because he was convinced the upper-classes would agree a deal with him a la Lord Londonderry. Many in the british aristocracy thought the UK should join Hitler and create the most powerful army in the world.
Anyway, my comment was meant merely tongue-in-cheek, sorry for any offence.
@MrBillcale yes and without british intelligence through japanese consular officials, every last one of your yank marines would have been hacked to pieces in japan, it's called being allies.
The only people who survived the Nazi goose-swagger were those who had geography going for them - the British had a channel to regroup behind, and the Russians had a country so huge they could just keep falling back until the krauts had overextended themselves.
Failing that, no one in 1940 had the army necessary to beat the Germans yet. The British troops sent to help defend France fared no better than the French, and the Americans and Russians would have failed too, IMHO.
You are absolutely right! It wasn´t just the channel, it was British stamina, organizational skills and fighting spirit which won the war (Battle of Britain, a will to win (Britain could have had a separate peace with Germany) Queen Mum and most of all: Winston Churchill).
I´d really love to meet a British WWII veteran. I would go down to my knees and his feet!!
You are absolutely right! The sacrifice of the humble men and women (in Britain for example) defeated the Nazis! Territory, the Channel and the Russian winter helped for sure. But the sacrifice, stamina and determination of ordinary people and politicians like Winston Churchill really made the difference!
@R2Parmly But that was the case. That's one of the dumbest arguments I've ever heard. The Nazi's failed because they bowed to a supreme ruler who was a paranoid egomaniac thanks to his use of amphetamines.
@justsamgosney1 "La France a perdu une bataille, mais la France n'a pas perdu la guerre."
Anyone who knows the French knows that they are almost neurotically stubborn. I like t think that the Canadians would have resisted the Nazi occupiers the way they did, but I'll never know, will I?
@justsamgosney1 "Resilient" implies the ability to get up from a defeat and continue fighting. Which is exactly what the French Résistance did. The FFI, the main organization, had 400,000 volunteers in its ranks by 1944. Their intelligence efforts were a big help to the Normandy invasion,, and during the Allied drive to Paris, they mounted rear-guard attacks ambushes and sabotaged roads, bridges and railways, which hindered the Nazi retreat and made them vulnerable to the U.S. and British.
V (1980's sci-fi series) ripped off this scene in the episode "Reflections in Terror." I was watching this in AHH today and I was taken aback by how similar the two scenes were. The space-Nazis (Visitors) singing their anthem by the piano, then the humans oversinging the Visitors with their own song (America the Beautiful) and forcing the Visitors to sit down.
If not for the time counter I would have sworn that this scene was at least 10 minutes...so much emotion and (may I say it) glory packed into less than 2 minutes...they were indeed artists in those days.
@jimaroo100 """Ahhhh the French, they sing a good fight.....then they surrender. """"
French fighted and conquered all europe with swords when it was in North America bisons and indians (the real americans) that you have murdered and robbed of their land. Bravo USA, you're great ! LOL
@Biloutemag The French never conquered all Europe, and the USA has nothing to do with the movie Casablanca or this scene from it. Perhaps your meds need adjusting?
@jimaroo100 Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the German tactic Blitzkrieg ("lightning war"), an overwhelming force combining artillery and tank battalions, aerial bombing and hundreds of thousands of infantry, all advancing very quickly (thus the name). The world had not seen the likes of it until Germany invaded Poland eight months before France, conquering it in two weeks, and were utterly unprepared.
While chatting with a bunch of French anesthesiologists after a conference (in Las Vegas), one asked what was the name of "that song from the movie Casablanca"? Just saying "As Time Goes By" would have been too tame ... Couldn't resist saying, "Oh, you mean ..." and singing "Lieb' Vaterland, magst ruhig sein ... Lieb' Vaterland, magst ruhig sein ...Fest steht und treu die Wacht, die Wacht am Rhein! " On cue, everyone stood up and broke into "la Marseillaise". Quite remarkable! : )
I think this clip shows exactly what separates the classics from movies today: for some reason even the best recent films never seem to have memorable, powerful scenes and moments like this one.
Nazi Germany took on the Red Army and they lost.

Shame they couldn't have been this resilient when the Nazis swaggered their way across the country to Dunkirk. Fabulous scene though, and makes you realise how shit the english national anthem is in comparison.
justsamgosney1 10 months ago
@justsamgosney1
Oh, THEY were this resillent, but there was too much politics in that war :(
ubetok 10 months ago 8

Agreed the French Anthem is one of the very best and the English one is semi-dead.
vonKressenstein 10 months ago
@justsamgosney1 Wtf? The Nazis would have 'swaggered' across England if it wasnt for the channel.
otherjr 9 months ago
@otherjr Then why didn't they? When Hitler watched thousands of battered, morale-sapped soldiers retreat from Dunkirk, why didn't he strike? Because there was water? The reason Hitler didn't attack the UK was because he was convinced the upper-classes would agree a deal with him a la Lord Londonderry. Many in the british aristocracy thought the UK should join Hitler and create the most powerful army in the world.
Anyway, my comment was meant merely tongue-in-cheek, sorry for any offence.

R2Parmly 8 months ago 19
@R2Parmly
Yes, yes, it's just channel, and huge spaces, and winter ... not the people who fought and won. Nazis said so too :))
ubetok 8 months ago 2
@ubetok
We all owe them so much!
P.S.
I am German.
badbeatout 8 months ago
@ubetok
You are absolutely right! The sacrifice of the humble men and women (in Britain for example) defeated the Nazis! Territory, the Channel and the Russian winter helped for sure. But the sacrifice, stamina and determination of ordinary people and politicians like Winston Churchill really made the difference!
badbeatout 5 months ago
@R2Parmly But that was the case. That's one of the dumbest arguments I've ever heard. The Nazi's failed because they bowed to a supreme ruler who was a paranoid egomaniac thanks to his use of amphetamines.

@justsamgosney1 "La France a perdu une bataille, mais la France n'a pas perdu la guerre."
Anyone who knows the French knows that they are almost neurotically stubborn. I like t think that the Canadians would have resisted the Nazi occupiers the way they did, but I'll never know, will I?
:-)
Anekantavad 7 months ago

French fighted and conquered all europe with swords when it was in North America bisons and indians (the real americans) that you have murdered and robbed of their land. Bravo USA, you're great ! LOL
Biloutemag 1 year ago
@Biloutemag The French never conquered all Europe, and the USA has nothing to do with the movie Casablanca or this scene from it. Perhaps your meds need adjusting?
brillig1313 1 year ago
