Opera at its best! “She loved me not. Love for me she has not”, with the strings carving deep in the heart, and wounding the soul; Shakespearian in its dramatic power. Towering Verdi; glorious Ghiaurov!
My late husband (a singer) arrived home one evening in 1984 with a LP in hand;
'Ghiaurov sings Verdi'. In handing it to me he said; 'When you hear this, you wonder why you still bother (to sing)... Since that evening, this man's voice has been my constant companion in music; it never failed to deliver magnificence!
Yeah, Mr. Ghiaurov had a great sound. I had the pleasure of singing the Inquisitore with him at Teatro communale di BO. 20years ago. We had a hit! Swear to God. Peace
the historical figure, or the one that Verdi created? Philip II of Spain was 32 when he married Elisabeth de Valois, who was 14. according to various sources, their relationship was a relatively happy one.
on another note, Ghiaurov is excellent, though i tend to favor Siepi.
Sounds fantastic. There is no one who can sing this as good. Once you hear his version, the others are weak by comparison in the warmth of his tone and beauty of his Basso Cantante Voice.
One of the wonders of opera art - an amazing artist and divine singer. His voice was of such thundering power that he could blw the entire hall away, even with 70 years!
I agree with fiercejarret. This is a first! Ghiaurov, not a big voice??? LOL. He is one of the biggest bass voices of all time. He may not be at his best in this video but he is still amazing. Next to the Requiem example, listen to his La Calunnia, you will hear 10 lions roaring!:)
Not a big voice?? You can tell when people comment how they've been listening to opera, or how old they are. Go list to young Nicholai like the Verdi Requiem back in 65 with Price and Pavarotti. He roars like 3 lions!!
Not a big voice??????Here Ghiaurov was 67 and haved a wonderful voice. If you listen the voice of the young Ghiaurov you can understand that he was a phenomen !!!!!!!!Ghiaurov is the best !!!!!!!
Doch! Eine große Stimme. Eine der Größten. Und eine der Ausdruckstärksten. Würdige Nachfolge von Chaliapin und Christoff in dieser Rolle. Und absolut ebenbürtig.
a comment like that reflects poorly not on Ghiaurov but on the one making it - the fact that Pavarotti recorded mostly with him says more than any opera buff ever could.
THIS is what real lyric singing is all about. Listen to Ghiaurov sing anything else and you get an idea of the size and depth of his instrument, all harnessed into this beautiful sound.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Ghiaurov's voice purportedly had 2 phases - the thunderous gigantic young voice and the smoother, less powerful later voice.
The size and color of the second phase were smaller and lighter - more like a Bass-Baritone.
BUT - Young Ghiaurov held his own against all but the very biggest - like Hotter.
London supposedly had a muffled voice. I have never heard London listed as one of the bigger voices.
Recordings often belie size. They can be tricked by certain overtones or dirty sounds.
wotan3000 2 years ago
Ran out of characters there...
TO be clear - the "smaller and lighter" second phase of voice was still way more than enough to stand up and dominate the greatest singers of his day.
If there are 3 singers I could switch places with, they are probably Hotter, Corelli and Ghiaurov.

Maybe not the bigGEST voice, but surely a big voice. For many people Ghiaurov was the so called re di bassi (king of the basses).

@luigi9966 I am also a low bass, my teacher say bass is a endangered vocal class.
Listening to ghiaurov make me wondering if I could, a day, reach so much completeness in lyric singing.
