guthrie seems to never listen to other guitar player's hints regrading swapping rhythm for solo--Ron wanted to bust a little solo and the natural thing to do would be to take over the chords but mr. govan keeps soloing as if it never happened. The same thing was with the licklibrary jam and a couple of others. Weird for such a musical guy,,,
no, he is overrated by the people who know him. the only unique things about him is the way he uses the whammy and some interesting sweeps. everything else he does i have heard before. every wanker on youtube who plays jazz fusion can sound like his runs.
@GoodMetalFTW just like steve, joe, eric and yngwie revolutionized guitar playing ron, guthrie, kiko and howe lead this revolution. honorable mention to mattias eklundh and jani liimatainen personal favs of mine
mattias isn't really that special. the only truly unique thing about him is his use of the tremolo. jani is great, but isn't revolutionary in any way shape or form. i love sonata arctica though. that band is genius. guthrie govan, bumblefoot, kiko loureiro, buckethead, and the guitarists from meshuggah and mastodon are the real guitar innovators. buckethead's shredding isn't that great imo, but his music is still completely unique and he does everything. EVERYTHING!!!
@GoodMetalFTW yeah i know but as i said those two are my personal favorites not comparing them to any of the above i just love jani's technique and melodic solos. and we cant leave michael romeo out of this.
romeo too. im sure his tapping will be an influence to many guitarists that make a name for themselves in the future. he isn't too high on the level of innovation imo, but his technique is amazing and it's tapping that always amazes me.
@GoodMetalFTW Bumblefoot has more imput in his own music than Buckethead, much more dimensions. Buckethead didn't produce and engineer most of his own stuff (like Ron does), he's not always the bass player (contrary to Ron) and he's not always the sole composer. Often there are quite a few contributors to a Buckethead album. Furthermore, Buckethead's quantity vs quality ratio is a "little" off. There have been at least 4 "Jordanish songs". He recycles a lot and uses a lot of patterns....
half true. there are buckethead solo albums and instrumental cds that he has been featured on. also the insearchfthe box set was all buckethead if i recall and that was 13 cds. there have been 32 solo albums by buckethead, that's quite a bit. it's true that he does a lot of recycling, but you try writing as much music as him and not recycle. he can ditch his patterns if he pleases. i have heard him ditch every single one of his patterns, he can do it if he tries.
@polylyth I only have the one video of Neil and Brian playing at the Carvin booth. I was able to get this one because I had pretty much the best seat right there! :)
