Jason may have been a pick player and not a finger style bassist like Cliff and Rob - but his presence and sheer energy onstage were undeniable. The early nineties live shows in Europe, Russia, and the US - just watch him onstage live! Awesomeness.
He brought so much raw power to their live shows. Rob is cool too, but his animal masculinity is more subtle, like a cougar or panther crawling about on stage, equally effective, but different.
Robert was better with Ozzy and clearly Jason is awesome! Im not really a Metallica die hard but it seems that there is a lot of spotlight placed on the bass players which is great!
Jason Newstead was kicked out because he did not share the same level of arrogance and invinicibility as Lars and James. Jason was just an ordinary man with a big heart. He knew that he was not as good as Cliff and did his best just to give Cliff a "dignified" substitute. And because he did not wish to superseed Cliff he was told to walk the plank. This shows disloyalty on behalf of the original members of Metallica just like the shafting they gave to Dave Mustaine. Shame on you Lars and James !

@notre1988 honestly, there isnt much difference, James voice is cleaner, and thats pretty much it, lars is still not the best drummer, kirk still uses wha to much and hetfield can still fuck up vocals at times.

Funny thing is cliff inspired me to play bass, even though i started 15 over years after his death. Cliff was ahead of his time, a true musician. A man so inovative yet im still able to spot the influences from classical music like Bach or Mozart.

Jason was a beast of a bassist. Some fans claim he wasn't as good as Cliff was, but Jason has a totaly different style of playing. Jason played with a pick instead of his fingers, so even his tones were different. Still this solo kicks ass.
Very beautiful playing by James and Kirk but all credit goes to Jason, so awesome! Great song one of their best, played when they were at the peak of their carrier.
This is Metallica I love and oh how I wish would return. Because ever since he left the band, the music, everything about them has never nor will be the same again. What makes Jason so amazing is that he was A FAN FIRST. That is why he gave it his all doing every show because of his love for the music and the fans just like him.
That's a five string he's playing!!! I've only seen him and Cliff play four strings! I thought Rob was the only one who was ever in the band who played more than four!

In their first 4 albums, they were actually good. Then they turned into .... "AND I KNOOOOOOooooooooooooowwwwWWOAH!" and just ... they were no longer the Metallica that everyone had known.

None of Metallicas other bassist can't even begin to compare to Cliff. Ron Mcgovney was a pure joke. Jason Newsted just plain sucks. And Rob, being the best of the rest, still can't come close to Cliff.

To be honest I don't know how the dude ever got the job. If you sit back and listen to the stuff he puts over the songs, man it's just bad.... He clearly hasn't a clue really of any theory whatsoever. But it's not his fault, I just don't see what the rest of the band saw in him.

@1BassBoomer I didn't say anything about Jason. I personally find John Myung of Dream Theater and Lars Norberg of Spiral Architect to be more talented then Cliff by far. Cliff is a little overrated really. :P. But thats just my opinion, don't get all in a huff over it.

Funny thing is cliff inspired me to play bass, even though i started 15 over years after his death. Cliff was ahead of his time, a true musician. A man so inovative yet im still able to spot the influences from classical music like Bach or Mozart.
I wish cliff was still alive so he could share this passion of his music, though this gives a paradox. If cliff were alive now; would songs like "nothing else matters" or enter sandman" ever have been wrote?

Jason was a beast of a bassist. Some fans claim he wasn't as good as Cliff was, but Jason has a totaly different style of playing. Jason played with a pick instead of his fingers, so even his tones were different. Still this solo kicks ass.

This is Metallica I love and oh how I wish would return. Because ever since he left the band, the music, everything about them has never nor will be the same again. What makes Jason so amazing is that he was A FAN FIRST. That is why he gave it his all doing every show because of his love for the music and the fans just like him.
