  • I prefer the UB40 version because of the Astro part. But this one is pretty good too. Of course it's good; It's Neil Diamond for crying out loud!

  • I like UB40, and I like Neil Diamond... They can both be great songs with different energy to them :-)

  • THIS WAS BANNED IN ..it was healing

  • this sounds like piss compared to Bob Marley's original!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Roverts1 eil's is the original. He wrote it

  • @Roverts1

Neil wrote and recorded this FIRST

  • he never sang this song, stupid !

  • 66 white wine drinkers

  • Awesome voice!

  • I love this song.

  • Good song. No matter who sings it.

  • I like this original version... clean and heart felt.

  • Right. Neil Diamond wrote this and played it. Tony Tribe then covered it with an amazing ska version. Then UB40 covered THAT...... Tony Tribe was amazing as it was so different from Neil Diamonds song. Neil Diamond has emotion behind it. And UB40? Well. Both versions s**t all over it from a great height. Sorry. Love Reggae but UB40s version is just so lacklustre and "Meh" compared with the other two...................

  • Incredible....smoother than thermodynamics at a cocktail party. The string section is as subtle as the well meaning religious undertones...so here is to good friends, beautiful women and my personal salvation! . ...---... ......!

  • UB40 were totally unaware of this version when they covered the song . They had heard Tony Tribes Jamaican version . I think they were a bit embarrassed when they discoverd this version, as Neil Diamond was probably the uncoolest person on the planet in the 80's ....just shows ya , doesn't it !!!!!!

  • @regularguytoo1 I'm sure ol' Neil didn't mind the killer royalty checks!

  • @juliano66.... please ...I am English , and we only accept cheques !

  • @regularguytoo1 Great. Swap out a 'ck for the 'que if ya ever cross the pond!

  • This guy ripped off UB40.

  • @antdigger No he didn't rip off UB40 at all, Neil Diamond was the original! Ub40 wasn't even the original Reggae cover.

Ub40 never released a single song that wasn't a cover version.

  • Comment removed

  • @antdigger and you were born from an anus!

  • i know neil wrote it but ub40 did so much more justice to this song lol

  • Best song ever!!!

  • should have used some background singers

  • @WalnutOfTerror I'm sorry but I can't agree. I saw Neil perform this live in London in the 1980s without any orchestral support. Then, his voice was raw but full. The acoustics in the theatre were first rate and he made the guitar sing. My recollection is of a very slightly slower tempo. You could almost feel people holding their breath as he sang. The man, like Karen Carpenter, had a way of transfixing people.

  • The original is by Tony Tribe and it's a rocksteady tune.

  • @NattyDoctor Um, wrong, Diamond wrote and recorded the song and released it on the 1967 album "Just for You" .Tony Tribe COVERED it in 1969. Obviously you have the internet, you know you can research information on it, right?

  • 64 people think ub40 done the original

  • UB40's versions vastly superior. Neil Diamond's version sucks

  • cracklin rosie, later that night

  • I this this is one of Diamond^s best songs. I don^t like UB40s version.Maybe because I^m not into reggae. The style of singing & emotion in this song should of benn a #1 in 68.However a song^s greatness is not measured by Billboard success.

  • @sumbarine The UB40 version isn't reggae. The reggae is a remix of UB40s version.

  • @Dpayton1123 Then what genre would you consider UB40'a version to be?

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO I would consider it a type of classic pop. The reggae version was a remix of the original UB40 style.

  • @Dpayton1123 What do you mean a remix of their style? I genuinely don't understand what you're saying with that.

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO I mean that Bob Marley and possibly a few other reggae artists took UB40's version and added the reggae. The original UB40 version had no reggae.

  • @Dpayton1123 Bob Marley couldn't have done that. He was no longer living when UB40's version came out. There is no other version of UB40's cover.

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO Dude . . . look it up . . . Right now its in the top right corner of my screen.

  • @Dpayton1123 ...I cannot see your screen as I'm not on your computer right now.

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO Lol, I meant check your screen and see if its there.

  • @Dpayton1123 I don't know what you mean by "check your screen." All I know is if you mean what I think you mean, the Back button isn't going to help here.

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO I believe I said RIGHT side of the screen, on the list of recommended watch videos. Are you really that stupid, or are you pretending?

  • @Dpayton1123 First off, excuse me for being dyslexic. Second, you could've just said "look in the related videos". Third, if I'm looking at the right video (the only UB40 video listed there, with them performing it live), THAT IS REGGAE.

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO look up red red wine ub40, should be the first vid.

  • @Dpayton1123 Every single video of UB40's version of the song is the same version.

  • @TackyRackyComixNEO No, it's not. There are versions with reggae, and versions without.

  • @Dpayton1123 Well, I would appreciate it if you would kindly point me toward one of these versions, since every UB40 rendition of this song I've found is exactly the same.

  • every next version got less chords

  • My theme song!!

  • This song somehow reminds me of one or two songs by Buddy Holly.

  • ub 40's version is one of the few times that a band covers a song and has much more success with it than the original. another case that comes to mind is elvis's cover of "hound dog", originally done by big momma thornton.

  • Takes me back to those sweet times in the 70's. I still do think about him.

  • so this is the archetype

  • I NEVER knew that UB40 covered this from an all time great. I just don't like this version. There is a reason why the cover version made such waves in the music industry, and this version (though original) didn't.

  • This is the greatest. The UB40 version sounds like some kind of clown music :(

  • UB40'S COVER IS BETTER.

  • i found a musical treasure!

  • This was my mom's favorite song for a long long time.

  • I heard him sing this on his first tour in the spring of 1968 or 69 at SWOSU

  • This song shows that Neil could any style of music even country.

  • this song is SHIT its all about UB40

  • @hamster12398 Neil wrote this song. Get a clue.

  • @somebodysvids Verified.

  • Comment removed

  • best version in the world. hands down!!!

  • this version is shit

  • I usually prefer the original versions of songs to covers but an exception is this

song. I know the version by UB40 is a cover but in my opinion it's better.

  • @Immortal1000

They are distinctly different versions of the same song, sung to elicit entirely different emotions. In this version Neil Diamond is singing the story of an alcoholic, "Red Red Wine you have taken my heart, but you can't take my soul".

When UB 40 did their wonderful version, it was set to a Raggae beat celebrating drinking and dancing. Later, Neil Diamond, does his own updated version, adding the verse, "Red Red Wine makes me feel so good even if the words aren't understood.

  • I didn't know Neil Diamond wrote Red Red Wine . Talented or what ? I seem to recall a Rod Stewart /Jeff Beck version from the early 70's that was quite good . Like this and Bob Marley and UB 40's version . Thanks

  • @HERBEANO contrary to popular belief, bob marley never covered this song

  • I fall in and out of music genres. I bounce between new stuff, blues, classic rock (etc..) But somehow, whenever I come full circle and start listening to Neil Diamond again, I cant help but think to myself;

    "why did I stop?"

  • No way is he better then UB40, they r the original.

  • i like this song but i think that UB40's version is better :P

  • @darknessfruit agree

  • @allysonknocksudown16

Hm confusing since Bob Marley never covered this song... ever.

  • this suckssssss bob marley all the way fagetsssssss suk dik

  • @allysonknocksudown16 your ignorance makes me laugh HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @allysonknocksudown16 HUH? what a maroon what does bob Marley have to do with this song. you racist bitch just cause he's black and a reggae beat , you auto think bob marley!

  • My favorite version. Onew hell of a singer!!!!!

  • Great Songwriter, Can't Sing To Save His Life

  • @liquidfreak

    Hahaha true.

  • @liquidfreak Gee millions of dollars and fanbase won't agree with you

  • Red red wine helps me forget but amber brown whiskey blacks me right out.

  • Diamond wrote it and sang the original. UB40 didn't record until later.

  • Apparently, he still needs arsehole.

  • yea....... not down for this (now im closing this tab and playing UB40 ) :]

  • @ JP4rmDa323 why are you angry?

  • sit back enjoy the music, neil daimond, yes a legend in his own ,ub40, one of the world best reggae stlye bands about which ever one you like just chill out and enjoy if not stick you thumb up your ass have a fart and clear your brains out

  • Yes amen.neil diamond is king!

  • The songwriter.....The singer...Amen!

  • this version?

    this is the original........

  • UB40's version is way better. The same way Jimi Hendrix made a better Watchtower.

  • everybody is dumb to talk "shit" on someone elses opinion all the comments should say is good song or even ub40 covered it good but everyone has to argue over a damn song just sit back and enjoy

  • Duh, of course this is Neil Diamond's song. What you clowns are not getting is that this is an over 50's (age wise) song and that the UB 40 version is much more hip and cool. Lord I hope this drives the point home, if not then don't read my posts it won't bother me in the least

  • UB40 sang red, red, whine... or was it bad, bad, whine. (misspelling intentional)

  • red red wine makes neil forget about sweet caroline

  • @RedandWhite91 No it doesn't. I fucked her before you and drank from the furry cup. #Inyaface!

  • Not a bad effort but it's more for the over fifties crowd. UB40 owns this one.

  • @Cre8Thought41 this is the original ..so im afraid neil diamond owns it... & im 31.. the guy is a legend... ub4o were a decent covers band though

  • @Cre8Thought41

Your aware Neil Diamond wrote it??..although yes I do prefer the UB40 version. give Mr Diamond a chance he's written some cracking songs.

  • @Cre8Thought41

Thats the truth, painful as it may be.

  • UB40 screwed this song up bad...plus UB40 sounds like they need to take a shit

  • this song means many things to me and will always be the only version I listen to

  • Indeed, says senile oldg

  • MAN.... How can anyone listen to this version compared to UB 40 ??? He is turning this song into something ugly.... I would change the fucking station if I were to hear that on my radio... I love the UB 40 version... If this is the original version, then UB 40 fixed the song... I wouldnt be so negative if this was just any song... UB 40 version of this song is like almsot a legend by itself.. anybody feel me ?

  • @JulientypeS Dude, calm down. Neil Diamond made a song, UB40 covered it. The latter is more iconic and famous. Let people have their own opinions on which is better. Also, ease up on the ellipses'.

  • @JulientypeS HAHAHA i love how this guy says that he's thurning this song into something ugly when if it wasn't for him there wouldnt even be a UB 40 version what a dumb fuck...

  • Who is ub40 and bob marley so I'd listen them?

  • I like both versions. U mad?

  • The problem with UB40 version is simply that it does not in any way express the meaning of this song. The sheer sadness. You cannot sing a depressing song about how much you love and miss someone with such an upbeat rhythm.

  • @Tulkoju yeah totally agree - UB40 version is good but makes me want to dance - Neil's version makes me want to drink red wine and get really bloody depressed about some old love!

  • @Tulkoju And yet UB40 does. I know, it's a language loophole, it's LCD, and I know what you meant. I think what you might be missing though, is that when people turn to something for escapism, they also make light of or deny the problem, too, so maybe the upbeat rhythm is actually more fitting.

  • @Tulkoju yes you can, and obviously people like it.

  • @Tulkoju Sure you can, just gives it a different feeling.

  • @Tulkoju yeah but the tony tribe version does

  • @Tulkoju thats your opinion ,

  • @Tulkoju there are loads of songs that do just that, its called ironic melodic arrangement.

  • @Tulkoju yes you can? LOL why do you think Nirvana was so uplifting to that generation. It was catchy melodic songs about sadness and feelings of longing. Christ man pay attention to music as a whole.

I was going to try and cite the "misfits" and the fucked up lyrics Danzig wrote to those poppy songs but I don't wanna blow your mind

  • Comment removed

  • @billyvassi - mr. punkerthanthou compares Nirvana to UB40?

  • @Tulkoju well the problem really is that UB40 version is wayyyyyyyy better...no disrespect.

  • @Tulkoju The UB40 has an upbeat rhythm but that doesn't mean that it's a happy song.

  • @Tulkoju A cover does not = exactly the same. You should understand this.

  • @Tulkoju so true, when i hear neil diamonds version he adds a special dose of irony into it

  • @Tulkoju I partially agree with you. Once the red wine red wine begins to fill one's brain it's more like the rhythm of UB40's version.

  • @Tulkoju "You cannot sing a depressing song about how much you love and miss someone with such an upbeat rhythm." Are you kidding? That's the reason UB40's version is better. I don't feel depressed about knowingly trying to drown my sorrows in red wine. Neil Diamonds version makes me feel depressed and I don't want to drink Red, Red Wine to it. I love the fact I can miss someone in a song and feel good about it. UB40 for the win.

  • @BigMilt007 and yet, my comment remains at the top. UB40 may make you forget sadness that is not deep, but if you are truly deeply sad you don't feel a connection to UB40's version.

  • @Tulkoju cualquiera gato... no bardees a ub40 gil

  • @Mrzappa92 Este tema es de Neil Diamond , UB lo reversiono en los 80.......

  • RAWR i hate country DISLIKE! DISLIKE!!! DISLIKE!!!!!!!

  • @Itachi476 Wait, you don't think this is country right? Please tell me there's some comment I didn't read that you're referring to and you aren't comparing Neil Diamond to country. This may be slower rock than most people these days are used to, but it's far from country! The song and the artist are a classic. Get some culture.

  • This is SUPERB.... and I will admit that the first time I heard the song was 1981 when UB40 released Labour of Love...I still love their version. Simply because it brought me to the Tony Tribe Ska version , which defined my late 20s. And from then I came here.. Neil Diamond is a genius , and no matter who records this song, its great.... A song thats hard to kill is a great song indeed

  • WELL SAID MAN RESPECT TO YOU

  • The original reggae dub was the best... type in Tony Tribe-Red Red Wine

  • I like UB40's version just fine, but this is much more soulful.

  • ub40 fucking blows all they do is cover music. Neil Diamond WROTE this song, no offense but if you try to compare ub40 to neil diamond thats the most idiotic thing you can do.

  • wasn,t that a symbel for a contraceptive devise

  • I never knew this version existed. I'm so used to the UB40 version that I find this one a really nice change.

  • There's nothing wrong with this original version. It's a great song. But this song was taken over by UB40 a long time ago. UB40's version has been heard and played so much It feels like their version is the original and this is the cover.

It's kinda like with Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U and Sinead O' Connor's version. Everyone knows Sinead's version because it's so famous and most prefer it to Prince's.

  • if this version is so much better, than why do a lot of people like the reggae version more popular?

  • I like bob marley betterrrr

  • @likemoonandsun bob marley never did this song. it was ub40

  • @likemoonandsun LOL, how can you like better a version that doesn't even exist?

  • @joaopmpgnr o whatever

  • @likemoonandsun Too bad Bob Marley never covered this song nor does any cover sound anything like him. Silly little kids...

  • @laylalaylady I'm not a kid.....

  • i like both

  • I've never heard this song sung by Mr. Neil Diamond until just now. I wonder if he got credit and royalties for the song when it was done by the other group in the late 80's. Neil is a wonderful person and untouchable singer with humility. He's awesome

  • I think both Illlumin and Blake223 are right. It is just a matter of your mood at the time you hear it. Neil Diamond is excellent, so are the UB40. So let us enjoy both versions..

  • The original is excellent but about 6 months after it was released, Jimmy James and the Vagabonds put out a wonderful version, similar to Neils but with a heavier string arrangement, my favourite and available on youtube

  • UB40 version is better cuz its reggae

  • this song has been a favourite for ages and i just realised neil diamond sung the original

  • i like ub40's version better :) more reggae

  • I really like the original version :) the others are awsome to, but this really touch my soul.

  • UB40 better.

  • I appreciate most ppl prefer whichever version they hear 1st but how can you say theres more soul in the UB40 COVER TRACK?!! Neil Diamond wrote this song and sang it how it was intended. Notice how UB40 had to jazz up the tune, all Neil needs is a guitar and his voice to capture his audience. The simplicity of it captures raw emotion. I agree with dwkjo, UB40 changed the tempo and changed the story and therefore its meaning.

  • UB40 vs Diamond. UB40's cover sounds like a guy partying to forget. Diamond's performance sounds like a guy drinking alone to forget. Two different tones that work in their own ways. I do prefer Diamond, though.

As a parallel: NiN's 'Hurt' vs Johnny Cash's. The former is the sound of a depressed man full of self-loathing. The latter makes it the song of an old man who's slowly losing everything. Both work perfectly well -- and I love both.

  • Just checked and confirmed - willyhot (the person that uploaded this) is from "antigua and barbuda", both known for their raggae and calypso music. Is it possible that bias is at work in "Top Comments" selection?

  • How is it that there are comments praising this version as best with +30 thumbs up to their comments and yet these two comments with just a couple thumbs up each saying UB40's version was better are listed as the top comments? Something is screwy here.

Oh yeah, and for the record, Neil Diamond's version is the best. It's from the heart. It speaks to the soul. And frankly, he just flat out sings it better than anyone else that has "covered" it.

  • song was meant to be remade by ub40

  • Neil Diamond gave this number to the world.....don't knock him, but thank him, cos without we would not have heard UB40 or Bob Marley keeping us chilled on this classic song.

  • NO ONE can sing this better than Neil Diamond!

  • @NormAndChuck you are an idiot. this is the worst version

  • This song came from Neil Diamond's heart when he asked himself, "What do I have to say?" UB40, and others, do a nice arrangement of this song, but when I hear them play their arrangement I always want to hear Neil . His performance is heartbreaking and seems to still be connected to where the song came from. I wish I could express myself better.

  • With out Neil Dimond's version you would't have ub40's version so Neil gets a prize for writing it

  • Why argue over which is the best? they are both excellent

  • Yo.....Neil Diamond - UB40 - Neil Diamond - Bob marley - UB40...round & round....Tony Tribe is "the" version that kicks!!

  • I have the CD and it says this song was wroten and composed by Neil Diamond to UB40, they were friends:)
